Childlabourmeansthatchildrenareforcedto
worklikeadultsandtakepartinaneconomic
activity.AccordingtotheILOInternational
LabourOrganizationthisisappliedtopeople
uptoagefifteen,orseventeenincaseof
dangerouswork.Eventhoughonlyabouta
fourthoftheILOmembershaveratifiedthe
respectiveconvention,thisagelimitis
generallyaccepted.[3]
Childlabourreferstotheemploymentof
childreninanyworkthatdepriveschildrenof
theirchildhood,interfereswiththeirabilityto
attendregularschool,andthatismentally,
physically,sociallyormorallydangerousand
harmful.

Younggirlsworkinginabrickfactory

Childlaborisfundamentallydifferentfromcasualwork
donebychildren,likeguardingotherchildren,or
helpinghereandthere.Childlabourisforbiddenin
mostcountries.
Therearetwokindsofworkthatminorscando:
1. Someworktheydoisacceptable,asitisonly
light,oreasytodo.Childrencanalsodoitwhile
theyarewellintegratedintothefamily.This
kindofworkcanbedoneinadditiontoan
educationthechildrenaregetting.
2. Theotherkindofworkisdifficulttodo,oritis
physicallyexhausting.Itmaybedangerous,the
childrenmayberequiredtoworkforlonghours
andinhumiliatingclothing.

Lawsonchildlabour,theFactoryActs,were
passedinBritaininthe19thcentury.Children
youngerthanninewerenotallowedtowork,
thoseaged916couldwork16hoursperday:
CottonMillsAct.In1856,thelawpermitted
childlabourpastage9,for60hoursperweek,
nightorday.In1901,thechildlabouragewas

throughscandalsmadebythemassmedia:Inthatmanner,aworkingchildisoftenseenasaslave,
workinginasweatshopinathirdworldcountry,producingtextiles,orasoneofthestreetchildrenin
SouthAmerica.Therealityisdifferentthough:Suchshopsexistallovertheworld,alsoincountrieslike
theUnitedStatesorItaly.Thefactthatchildlabourisinvolvedisoftenhidden:Morethanthreequarters
ofthisworkisdoneinthesectorofagriculture,orithastodowithactivitiesdoneathome,inthe
