Joseph Hollinshcd was indicted for having, on the 8th
November lost, at the Wollombi, feloniously stolen one
heifer and ene calf, tho property of Patrick Houlahan. Tho
prisoner pleaded not guilty, and was
dofended by Mr.
Simpson.
The jury, after n considerable absence, returned
to Court with a sentence
of guilty.
Sentenced deferred.
Elisabeth M'Fadjen
was
indicted for having, on
the
13th November, at Largs, feloniously stolen, taken
away,
embezzled, eecreted, or destroyed, a letter sent
by post
she being not a person employed in the Post Office,
The
defendant pleaded not guilty, and was
defended by Mr.
Ellis, who addressed the jury, and his
Honor
summed
up.

This case
interest, and great
excited much
surpriso was expressed that such a trivial matter should bo
brought before a court of justice.

"William Niness and Joseph HollinBhed were


brought up

former convicted on Tuesday for stealing a calf at tho Paterson, and the latter on
Wednesday,
for stealing a heifer at the
Wollombi. His Honor sentenced
Niness to one
year's imprisonment,
and Hollinshcd
to
eighteen months'
in Darlinghurst
imprisonment-both

gaol.

James Georgo Cox

was
indicted for having committed
and eorrupt perjury, on the 6th December, at the
Court-house, East Maitland, in the courso
of his examination before E. D.
Day, Esq, Deputy Commissioner of
Insolvent Estatep, by stating that ho did not
possess any
disclosed in his schedule and
propci ty but what was
it was
amended
schedule of assets, whereas
found that ho
owned a black horse not included in said schedules.
The
prisoner pleaded not gnilty, and was
defended
by Mr.
Ellis.
Tho jury acquitted tho prisoner, who
diswas
charged.
William Deacon was indicted for having on the 30th
October, 1861, 6tolcn a horse, tho property of
John Tag
gait, Howes Valley.
Tho prisoner pleaded not guilty and
was
defended by Mr. Simpson.
Mr. Simpson, at this stage
of tho proceedings, submitted that there was
no
case
made
out against the prisoner to go to the jury, and that ho
be discharged.

His Honor, having concurred, discharged the prisoner accordingly.
Ann Scott was indicted for having feloniously stolen
ono
horse or gelding, the property of Oliver
Maxwell, on the
19th December last. The prisoner pleaded not guilty, and
was
undefended.
Tho witnesses called were,-constable
Leonard,
Mark
Turner,
Oliver Maxwell, and
Patrick
Sullivan. The jury, without retiring, found tho prisoner
guilty, who was remanded
for sentence.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY

Thomas
Anderson was indicted for having, at Maitland,
on
the 3rd November
last, feloniously stolen
one saddle
and one bridle, tho property of William Spink.
The prisoner
pleaded not guilty, and was
defended by Mr. Simpson.
The jury found the prisoner guilty, and sentenced
him to two years' imprisonment in Darlinghurst gaol.
Ann Scott was sentenced to two years'
imprisonment in
Darlinghurst gaol; but if, at the expiratisn of twelve
months,
a favourable report of her conduct
was
made by the matron
of the gaol to his Honor, he would
the Execurecommend
tive to remit the remainder
of her sentence
The Court then adjourned sine die.
