INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING TEMPLATE for VIL ASSIGNMENT

OVERVIEW & CONTEXT

Your name:
Michele Zmich
Grade level and school:
5th Pattengill
Title of lesson/activity:
Visual Inquiry Lesson
Teaching date(s) and time(s):
10/24/14
Estimated time for lesson:
50 min.
Overview of lesson:
In this lesson Students will compare and contrast two images that
depict interactions between Europeans and Native Americans.
Students will then discuss why the images are so different
considering when they were created and by whom. Students will
think about why each artist might depict the interactions the way
they did. Which audience they were trying to reach and what their
massage was. Central Question: How did the Europeans treat the
Native people they met in the new world?
Context of lesson:
This unit is about the explorers who came to North America. The
previous unit was about different geographical features and how
people adapt to them. The lesson after this is about the settlement
of the New World.
Background research:
Columbus- Journal of the First Voyage
http://www.americanjourneys.org/aj-062/index.asp
Exploration and early settlement- Library of congress
http://www.americanjourneys.org/aj-062/index.asp
In the journal of Columbuss first voyage he describes the native
peoples as not possessing advanced weapons of any kind, thinking
that the Europeans had come from heaven, not having any religion
and willing to give away all they have for beads, bells and other
small items. They had no knowledge of swords. He makes several
statements as to how easily subjugated they would be and how easy
to convert to the Catholic faith. He makes note of the number he
will bring back to Spain with him as if not concerned with how the
native people would think or feel about that idea.
I reading about the Spanish requirement of 1513 I learned that by
reading aloud a document prior to interacting with natives,
Spaniards considered themselves entitled to conquer any group that
did not willingly obey the Catholic church and the King of Spain.

Students will be able to
Consider sourcing information
when considering images to find
clues as to the perspective of the
artists.

Students will be able to

compare and contrast two
images of the same event to
consider the perspectives of the
artists and determine their own
perspective after doing so.

individuals and groups during
the same historical period
differed in their perspectives.
D2.His.6.3-5. Describe how
peoples perspectives shaped
the historical sources they
created.

Analyze multiple accounts of

the same event or topic, noting
important similarities and
differences in the point of view
they represent.

In comparing the images

showing the interactions
between the Europeans and
the Native Americans
students can use sourcing
information to help determine
the perspective of the creators
of the images.
In comparing the images
showing the interactions
between the Europeans and
the Native Americans
students can explore why they
are so different and consider
the perspective of each artist.

ASSESSMENTS
Connection to learning goals:.
Students will write their answer to the inquiry question
after considering both images.

ATTENDING TO THE LEARNERS

Anticipating student ideas:
I think students will know that Columbus came to America in 1492. I
think they may not know that he did not reach the mainland. I think
they will know that he traded with the native people. They may or
may not know that he took slaves.
I think that some students may know about the consequences of
interaction with the Europeans, slavery, disease, driven off their land
but I do not know if all students will know this.
I think that most students are aware that Native Americans were
treated badly. They may not have a frame of reference for why
people at the time did not feel that the treatment of native peoples was
a cause for concern at the time. They may not be able to relate to
viewing other people as barbarian or sub-human. There may be
confusion about slavery as some may think it only was a concern for
Africans.
I think an open discussion of these questions/ misconceptions is a
great way to handle these issues. I think framing this discussion by
asking questions that require critical thinking skills will enhance
students knowledge of perspective. Asking students Why the think
people might have had a different way of thinking at that time or
explaining why people thought a certain way and asking why we
think differently now might spark some great understanding and

discussion.
By using visual, auditory and kinetic learning activities the different
learning styles of students can be activated and engaged. By
revoicing and asking other to revoice key ideas students will get help
picking out important details. By modeling the activity and marking
other students successful modeling instruction is repeated in more
than one way. By utilizing turn and talk opportunities, even students
who are not comfortable speaking in large group settings can
participate.

Assessment directions:
I have an exit for you with both images on it.
Please write a few sentences to answer our central
question How did the Europeans treat the Native
peoples they met in the New World? This is
something you will do independently. When you
are done you can pass your paper to the end of the
table.
Scripted conclusion:
.
Today we looked at two images that showed
different perspectives about how to answer our
central question how did the Europeans treat the
Native peoples thy mat in the New World? We
considered how each image showed a different
perspective and thought about why the author
hose to portray it the way he did. When looking
at sources, whether images, writings, or other
documents it is important to take the perspective
of the creator into consideration and wonder if
there might be other perspectives as well. This is
something to think about when looking at sources

in social studies and in other subject as well

REFLECTION ON PLANNING
My learning goal for this lesson is to manage a
large group discussion while keeping everyone
engaged and participating. I need to manage
technology well in order to facilitate this goal.
Preparing to teach this lesson:
I located and sourced appropriate images and learn
background information. Prepare images for lesson.
Practice with materials to be used. Create
worksheet for assessment.
