GUA DE PRONUNCIACIN INGLESA

Usted sabe que en ingls "las palabras no se dicen como se escriben".
Sin embargo, hay reglas.
PRIMER PASO: conocer el nombre de las letras.
SEGUNDO PASO: saber pronunciarlas. La mejor manera de saber cmo
se pronuncian las letras es escucharlas siguiendo el guin de las frases
con el libro abierto, en busca de la letra que usted. desea "or en accin".
De todas maneras conviene tener una aproximacin de cmo se
pronuncian las letras. Los nombres de las letras son:
A = i B = bi C = si D = di E = i F = ef G = yi (fuerte) H = ich 1= i
J = yi K = ki L = el M = emm (cierre la m NO eng) N = enn (cierre, NO eng)
O= u P =pi Q = ki R = ar (suave NUNCA arr)
S = es T = ti
U = i
V= vi (NUNCA bi) W = dobeli X= ecs Y= ui Z = ssi (fuerte, no z espaola)
LOS SONIDOS CORTOS Y LARGOS DE LAS VOCALES INGLESAS
TERCER PASO: conocer los dos sonidos de cada vocal.
El sonido corto de cada vocal es como en espaol (menos la u corta)
y el largo es el nombre de la letra en ingls que vimos antes.
short a (corta) = a long a (larga) = i short e (corta)= e long e (larga) = i
short i (corta) = i long (larga)= i short o (corta) = o long o (larga) = u
short u (corta)= o (bus se dice bos) long u (larga)= i.
DOS VOCALES QUE CASI SIEMPRE SUENAN JUNTAS DE UNA MANERA
oo = u: cool/kul =fresco. Excepcin blood/b/od =sangre.
ee = : see/sii =ver. ea = i: seatlsiit = asiento. au = o: autum!tom = otoo
eu = u: neutral/ntral = neutral. e = i relief/rilif = descanso, alivio.
ai = i: aid/id = ayuda. ia = i reliablelriliyabel = confiable
LA e AL FINAL DE UNA PALABRA ES SILENTE
sale/si/ =venta; to take/tu tik = llevar o tomar; to have/tu jaf (tener o haber)
OTRAS CONSIDERACIONES IMPORTANTES
A excepcin de que la e final no se pronuncia es muy importante siempre
pronunciar el final de las palabras y no "comerse" ninguna parte de la palabra o
NO lo van a entender, --pues muchas palabras dependen del sonido final para
poder obtener su significado correcto:
craze/cris = locura o lo que est de moda pero
crazy/crisi (z fuerte ing lesa) = loco.
CASI TODA PALABRA CON MS DE UNA SLABA ES LLANA
Casi siempre, palabra nueva con que usted se tropiece NO llevar el nfasis
como en espaol, donde casi todas las palabras son agudas:
motorlmuror = motor mindful/mindfu/ = cuidadoso y no maindfl.
LA ENTONACIN SE ADQUIERE-NO SE APRENDE
Otro punto importante es la entonacin de la frase y para ello, de nuevo,
la repeticin de la grabacin le dar la pauta. Los nios, a diferencia de los
adultos, se divierten repitiendo frases. Usted tiene que hacer el
esfuerzo de repetir para fijarse los patrones de entonacin ingleses.
Es muy posible que usted pronuncie todas las palabras bien , pero si su
entonacin no le "suena" familiar a su interlocutor, ste le va a decir que
no lo entiende.

O sea, la h = j; how/ju = cmo y la wh =ju; whyljui = por qu
La gh = f; tough/tof = rudo. O silente though/du =aunque
La ph = f; Philadelphia/fi/ade/fia = Filadelfia
La th = z espaola; theater/ziater =teatro
La th = t; Thompson/tmson =un apellido comn (o sea, la hes silente)
La lh = d; theldi/de/da (depende de la palabra siguiente)= el o la
La ch = k; chemotherapy/kimozrapi =quimioterapia
La ch = ch; child/child = nio/a o hijo/a (O sh cherish/sherish = adorar)
La sh = sh; (no existe en espaol, es como una ch suave) shoe/shu =zapato

Prlogo
El ingls est plagado de coloquialismos o expresiones
idiomticas. Como es sabido, el coloquialismo consiste en una
nueva acepcin que se Je otorga a una palabra que ya existe con
su significado correspondiente.
Por ejemplo, cualquier persona con un conocimiento bsico
del ingls aprende que cat significa gato, y cool, fro o fresco.
Cuando un visitante llega digamos a los Estados Unidos y
escucha, en medio de una conversacin entre conocidos, la
oracin Sam is a real cool cat, no logra entender lo que
acaba de oir. Que Sam (un amigo) es un gato fro ? Traducida
literalmente, la oracin parece disparatada. En realidad se
estaba haciendo referencia a una persona que es calmada.
En esta instancia, cat y cool funcionan como expresiones
idiomticas.

carece de una autoridad o academia que dicte lo que es correcto
o incorrecto, los coloquialismos caen en desuso y resurgen

La adquisicin de una nueva lengua cuando uno es adulto tiene sus
partes amenas y sus partes trabajosas. Los ejemplos humorsticos son la
parte amena, pero para poder entender y aprovechar los dilogos tenemos
que prepararnos ensayando las frases que vamos a or y luego a repetir
en ingls. Y esto solamente lo podemos hacer yendo una por una sobre
cada frase o cada palabra bajo estudio hasta que sepamos pronunciarla
bien y sepamos su significado.
No es cierto que un adulto pueda llegar a adquirir otro idioma igual
que lo hizo con su lengua natal. Ya se ha perdido la capacidad lingstica
con que nacimos. El adulto requiere saber lo que est aprendiendo y es
ah donde entra la traduccin, que es un equivalente, una nocin, no una
actividad adicional, se le brinda para que tenga una idea general en su
propio idioma.

Secuencia espiral de la enseanza

Podr notar que muchos de los modismos que aprenda los va a ver en
frases subsiguientes. Esta es una manera de reforzar sus conocimientos,
o sea, que enseguida se refuerza lo aprendido de forma que se fije en la
mente y no se olvide. Lo ltimo que Ud. necesita despus de largas horas
de trabajo es estudiar algo que se le va a olvidar o que no es necesario.
Por eso, el vocabulario, los verbos y las estructuras gramaticales son
de alta frecuencia y son aplicados una y otra vez para garantizarle que
"you can put it in the bank" o sea que "puede meter en el banco" --otro
modismo muy recurrido, que quiere decir que con eso no hay problema-todo conocimiento adquirido pues no lo va a perder ni a desperdiciar.
Siguiendo el patrn extremadamene prctico del curso, se le
recomienda que se detenga a reflexionar en los grupos de modismos que
se encuentran cercanos en orden alfabtico, como por ejemplo, los que
tienen que ver con el verbo to get =obtener, que se usa muchsimo en
ingls y en maneras que no nos podemos imaginar los hispanohablantes.

progresivamente gracias a las rampas por donde vamos.

Veinte sugerencias para aprender ingls

l. Lleve consigo una libretita donde anote dudas. Todos conocemos
personas que hablan ingls y espaol. U semos esas personas como
nuestros tutores gratuitos. Lo ms importante a la hora de aprender no
es saber la respuesta es saber qu preguntas hacer.

2. Tenga a mano siempre un diccionario bilinge de bolsillo. Cada vez

que tenga un momento libre busque esa palabra que hace das que viene
pensando buscar.
3. Tenga en casa un diccionario bilinge mayor al lado de la cama y
otro en la sala y otro en la cocina, O sea, siempre. tenga un diccionario
bilinge cerca de U d. para que la pereza no le gane y pueda U d. hacer
sus consultas al momento.
4. Tenga en casa un diccionario todo en ingls, el ms caro y mejor
ilustrado con dibujos que su presupuesto le permita.
5. Establezca trato con personas que solamente hablen ingls. Intente
comunicarse con seas, sonrisas, gestos, recuerde que los turistas
siempre se comunican con los tenderos porque hay una transaccin de
beneficio mutuo entre los dos. Todos queremos tener amigos y con la
amistad viene el ingls.
6. Compre libros de dibujos animados o comics. La relacin entre el
idioma coloquial y los dibujos resulta ser un excelente medio para lograr
entender los dilogos y para conocer la cultura y los dichos de la vida
diaria.
7. Sintonice estaciones de televisin en ingls y si su televisor lo permite
ponga los subttulos en espaol a veces y otras veces en ingls. Es bueno
leer en ingls lo que se est diciendo pero cuando el dilogo en muy difcil
entonces es mejor tenerlo en espaol.
8. Compre CDs de canciones en ingls, o vaya a la biblioteca pblica
donde se los prestan. La msica es una manera excelente de aprender
idiomas porque se nos "pegan" las cosas mejor. Asegrese de tener
la letra de la.s canciones para que las pueda seguir y siempre con sus
diccionarios cerca. Escriba la letra de sus canciones favoritas en su
Cancionero particular y aprenda a cantar esas canciones.

9. Posea una Biblia en ingls y otra en espaol. Como los libros y los
versculos estn numerados, le va a resultar fcil hallar la versin de lo
mismo en el otro idioma para comparar y aprender. La cultura occidental
se basa en la Biblia y t anto el ingls como el espaol tienen mltiples
dichos que vienen directamente de hechos de la Biblia.
10. Asista a la iglesia en ingls. Los sermones hablan sobre temas
religiosos conocidos y de la vida diaria. El ministro habla pausadamente
y con sus gestos ayuda a que Ud. capte el contexto de lo que dice.
11. Y hablando de iglesias, muchas tienen clases de ingls gratuitas,
por lo menos en EE.UU. Si Ud. se encuentra fuera de EE.UU. nase a
asociaciones de britnicos o de norteamericanos o acuda a sus actividades
gratuitas.
12. Vea deportes que conoce en televisin en ingls. Como ya Ud. conoce
las reglas y los trminos, va a poder entender lo dems, o sea, ya est
Ud. a medio camino.
13. Acuda a restaurantes donde el men est en ingls y donde hayan
fotos de los platos.
14. Si no vive en pas de habla inglesa trate por todo los medios de visitar
pases de habla inglesa. Y si vive en un pas de habla inglesa, trate
de salirse del barrio de habla hispana para andar parte del tiempo en
tiendas y negocios de h abla inglesa .
15. Repase las pginas amarillas de la gua o directorio telefnico
que tenga en ingls para asociar palabras con las ilustraciones de los
anuncios. Hay guas bilinges donde podr ver ambos trminos .
16. Lea cuanta etiqueta de productos tenga que est en ingls .
Como ya tiene el producto o artculo, el lenguaje est en contexto, o sea,
que es ms fcil descifrar lo que se est leyendo.
17. Compre o saque de la biblioteca revistas como TIME . Las fotos y las
ilustraciones de noticias que ya Ud. ha visto en espaol hace que no se
frustre y pueda seguir los hechos y entender algo aqu y algo all hasta
que va aumentando su comprensin.
18. Compre o saque de la biblioteca revistas en ingls de temas que lo
apasionan. No hay nada como estudiar cosas que nos gustan mucho.
19. Notar que NO recomendamos or la radio en ingls. El motivo es que
es muy frustrante tratar de descifrar las noticias o comentarios sin tener
imgenes que nos den contexto o tratar de entender canciones sin la letra
en frente de nosotros. Ud. debe evitar las frustraciones.
Valga la redundancia pero las frustraciones frustran a los que estudian
otra lengua . Ud. debe de quitar toda ansiedad al proceso y h acerlo lo ms
ameno que pueda para que no se detenga su progreso.
20. Y hablando de persistencia, como dijo Winston Churchill
--"Never, never, never give up." O sea, "Nunca, nunca, nunca se d
por vencido". Otro uso interesante de up. Give up quiere decir cesar,
abandonar, literalmente "dar para arriba", o sea, no se entregue o "no
levante las manos".
