Unit Lesson Plan

Date: 2/9/15- 2/17/15


Overall lesson topic/title and purpose: Tuskegee Airman Unit
Goals/Objectives for todays lesson: To show how African American pilots overcame adversity
and discrimination during WWII. To understand how adversity shapes individuals and
experiences and to gain perspective on racism, sexism, and discrimination. To understand how
racism, sexism, discrimination, and prejudice still exists today and impacts all of our lives daily.
Essential Questions: How has discrimination affected lives throughout history and how does it
still affect the world today?
Materials & supplies needed: Packets, Tuskegee Airman movie
DAY 1
Introduction to the lesson: (15 minutes)
Opening: What is adversity?
OUTLINE of key events during the lesson: (40 minutes)
Explain the project, the objectives, and the essential question. Read the introduction,
have students do the Thinking Question. Then have students work on the definitions for the
movie vocabulary.

DAY 2-3
Introduction to the lesson:
NO Opening
OUTLINE of key events during the lesson: (50 minutes)
Go over the objectives; discuss the homework and what is expected.
Have students do the What You Know section of the Three Column Notes before
teacher starts the movie.
Teacher then explains the What You Learned and the Questions column.
Start movie
Stop movie at certain parts and have brief discussion about the importance of that
event.
The train scene when the blacks are moved to the front of the train.
After the two white officers give their Welcome speech
The training scenewhen there is the black on black discrimination
When Mrs. Roosevelt arrives at the base.

DAY 4
Introduction to the lesson:
NO Opening
OUTLINE of key events during the lesson: (50 minutes)
Have students do the What You Know section of the Three Column Notes before
teacher starts the movie.
Start movie
Stop movie at certain parts and have brief discussion about the importance of that

event.
ANY POINT that teacher feels important to make
Movie should only take 15-20 minutes.
Have student do the after Thinking Questions.
Introduce the final project as a theoryas a discussion, ect.
DAY 5
Introduction to the lesson:
What adversity did the Tuskegee Airman face?

OUTLINE of key events during the lesson: (50 minutes)


Pass out new final project packet.
Go over the objectives; discuss the homework and what is expected.
They will define the 4 words for the discussion in their discussion notes so that they
have a class definition for these words.
There are 4 different articles (I have an article at a lower lexile score for students who
struggle with the level) that are being given to students in the packet. They will get into their
packet groups. They will read the articlesunderlining and writing notes on them. Then they
will fill out the Article notes worksheet.
Once they have done this and discussed they can work on the homework part of the
packet.

DAY 6
Introduction to the lesson:
How does adversity affect you?

OUTLINE of key events during the lesson: (50 minutes)


Readdress the objectives of the discussion.
Go over discussion rules.
Raise your hand to talkI will write your name on the board and we will go in that
order.
Write down what you want to say so you dont forgetI do not want to hear I forgot
what I was going to say
Remember to use the words: I agree because, I disagree because, I wonder about this
because
You should use information from your articles and from the movie as well.
You may state your opinion
Remember everyone has the right to their own opinion.
EVERYONE MUST PARTICIPATE
Do not talk unless it is your turn to talk.
Students will then participate in a whole class discussion.
Teacher will moderate the discussion.
Students will then answer the exit question which will be based on the discussion but it
will be about how individuals fight discrimination and what can the students themselves do to

fight discrimination in their own lives.


Assessment(s): The written assignment will be graded. Students will also receive a
participation grade based on the discussion. Teacher will be checking names as they speak
