7. Lesson Sequence

Introduction (5 mins)
I will start off the lesson by asking the students questions about the school. I will also ask
the students what they notice about how the school is built and its functions. Then I am
going to narrow the conversation down to the features in our classroom.

Well, you will soon find out.
Okay
But first, can anyone tell me what do you

There are 2 playgrounds.
There are lots of classrooms.
The school is divided up by grades.

Stenger set up our classroom?
His desk and Ms Vickys desks are in one
corner and the computers are in that corner.
Great job. So now I would like you all to clear Students clear off their desks.
your off your desks so that you may draw and
color your maps of our classroom.

Procedures (15 mins)

What you will do/say
Okay, so we have made some observations
of Mr Stengers classroom structure, now I
want you to make all these observations and

more and draw them on your paper.

Walk around to check out the progress of
students classroom maps.
Make sure you leave space at the top for the
title of your map.
Answer students questions.
As you finish drawing your map, I would like
you to color it using crayons or markers.
You are also going to need to leave a small
space at either the bottom or top by the title.
You are going to leave this space so that you
can make a legend or a key. A legend is a
place on a map where someone can look at to
identify what it is you drew if they cannot make
it out themselves.

Students continue to work.

How do you draw that (points to something in

the classroom)?
What is that called (points to object)?
Students start finishing their observations and
begin to color.
Why?
Oh okay.

Closure (10 mins)

What you will do/say

If you finish your map construction of our
classroom, I would like you to turn it in here
and then grab a map of the school building
and the half sheet of directions.
Start grading the maps using the a quick
checklist or rubric.
Alright it is now time to clean up. Your map
constructions should be up here on the table.

What the student(s) do/say

Students turn in their map constructions and
begin working on the Kipps Map assignment.
Students color in the school map using the
directions.
Students turn in the map constructions.

8. Modifications for children at different learning levels

A simple modification for this lesson is to cut out the questions at the beginning to allow the
students more time with observing and constructing their map of the classroom.
