Learning Goals and Objectives Essay

The goals for my unit are aligned with the third grade Virginia Standards of Learning that are
part of the measurement unit. The activities included in my unit of instruction are designed so that the
students will have several different exposures to help them meet the learning goals and objectives.
Although the measurement unit covers a broad range of topics, the students will be introduced to each
new concept gradually while each goal is reviewed several times throughout the unit by use of the math
workbook and the review activities I have created.
The students have had some limited exposure to measurement in second grade, but this will be
their first in depth exposure to measurement. The students have been practicing perimeter and area with
exit cards during the previous math unit. Most of my learning objectives relate to measurement because
not only is this the student's first in depth exposure to measurement, but measurement also had the
lowest scores on the pre-assessment.
My first learning goal is that students will be able to estimate and use U.S. Customary and
metric units to determine length, weight, volume and mass of an object or figure. This learning goal is
taken directly from the Virginia Standards of Learning standard 3.9a, 3.9b and 3.9c (Virginia
Department of Education, 2009). This learning goal is the main focus of my unit and is the concept that
all of the concepts in this unit are built upon. The learning goal states that students will be able to use
U.S. Customary and Metric units to estimate and determine actual measurement (Virginia Department
of Education, 2009). This learning goal covers all of the objectives which are estimating the weight,
length, mass of an object, measuring the actual weight, length or mass of an object and choosing the
correct tool. Each of these learning goals ensure that students understand the process of measuring the
weight, length or mass of an object and understand how to execute the process of actual measurement.
My second learning goal is that students will be able to determine the perimeter of an object by
measuring the distance around the sides. This learning goal aligns with standard 3.10a from the
Virginia Standard of Learning. This standard states, The student will be able to measure the distance

around a polygon to determine perimeter (Virginia Department of Education, 2009). Perimeter will be
introduced after students have met learning goal one, which includes linear measurement. Once the
students have mastered measuring in inches, centimeters, yards and meters, the students will begin to
apply the process of measurement to a closed figure instead of a concrete object and lines drawn on
paper. Once mastery in linear measurement has been established, the transition to polygons should be
smooth.
My third learning goal is that students will be able to determine the surface area of a figure by
counting square units. This learning goal is taken from Virginia Standard of Learning 3.10b which
states The student will count the number of square units needed to cover a given surface in order to
determine area (Virginia Department of Education, 2009). Although area does not require
measurement with measuring tools, it is closely related to perimeter. Because of the close relation of
this concept, area will be taught following perimeter. The students will be taught how to count square
units to determine area and how to count square units to determine area in a shaded grid area.
This measurement unit is very comprehensive and covers many areas of measurement. Because
of the range of topics, there needs to be several learning goals that each contain several learning
objectives. All of these learning goals and objectives will be used to shape my instruction. All of the
instructional activities included in this unit will be designed to help students meet the learning
objectives. This unit of instruction will be guided by assessments both formally and informally. I will
use the assessments to determine whether students are ready to move on to the next objective and will
remediate individual students that are not grasping the concept based on the results. My goal is for
every student to be as successful as possible in meeting the goals. Throughout my unit, I will provide
several different ways for students to demonstrate their knowledge and will incorporate different
learning styles.
