Instructional objectives: list 2observable/measurable objectives for this lesson. Use precise language w/ action verbs.
The student will be able to:
1. Look at the insides of fruits and vegetables provided by the teacher by holding a magnifying glass
up to the fruit or vegetable.
2.

Maintain a conversation by talking with the teacher when prompted

Experiences: Describe authentic (real life, hands-on not representational) materials and enticing/ creative experiences in
which children are actively engaged. Safety should be addressed if warranted.

In this activity, the students will have a conversation with the teacher, as well as look at the inside of fruits
and vegetables. The teacher will work with small groups at a time (4-6 children). The teacher will assess
prior learning by looking at pictures in the book Seeds Sprout! They will review a picture on page 3 with
the parts of the plant and the seeds in the apple on page 9. It is important for the teacher to ensure the
students have a basic knowledge about seeds.
After the assessment of prior knowledge takes place, the teacher will bring out different fruits and
vegetables (tomatoes, apples, cucumber, and a bell pepper). Each child should have their own fruit or
vegetable to avoid confusion. The teacher will ask questions to start a conversation. The questions may be
asked to one particular student. Questions may include, but are not limited to:
What color is this fruit/vegetable?
Is your fruit/vegetable heavy or light?
Is your fruit/vegetable hard or soft?
Have you ever eaten this fruit or vegetable before?
Do you think the inside will look the same as the outside?
What do you think we will find on the inside?
Once the teacher has asked the questions, the teacher will cut the tomato, apple, cucumber, and bell pepper
in half. The students will be given magnifying glasses to look and see what is on the inside of the fruits and
vegetables. The teacher will compare different foods (for example, Does the inside of the pepper look the

same as the inside of an apple? What do you notice is different?). The goal of this activity is to have to
students maintained a conversation, use a magnifying glass, and notice the seeds inside.
Safety Considerations:
The teacher must be sure to cut the foods in an area where the children will not have access to the knife that
was used. The teacher must be the only person using the knife. The students must keep the foods away
from their mouths.
Evidence of student learning:
The teacher will be working directly with the teacher the entire lesson. The teacher will either be sitting
with the students or walking around to assist the students while using the magnifying glasses.
To provide evidence that the students are learning, the teacher will take anecdotal records during the lesson.
The teacher will also take pictures of the students using magnifying glasses.
