CourseDescription
Thiscoursewillprovidestudentswithanadvancedunderstandingofchildren'ssocialandemotionaldevelopmentandit's
affectonchildren'sselfregulatorybehaviour.Tosupportdevelopment,studentswillintegrateECEbestpracticesintotheir
relationshipswithchildren,dailycurriculumplanningandenvironmentaldesign.
Prerequisites:EDUC21FoundationsinEarlyChildhoodEducation,EDUC84EarlyChildhoodDevelopment
Corequisites:None.
LearningOutcomes
Uponsuccessfulcompletionofthiscourse,studentswillbeableto:
1. Interpretchildren'ssocialandemotionalbehaviouranddemonstrateeffectivebestpracticestrategiesthatwillmeet
children'sneeds.
2. Describesocial,emotional,andphysicalenvironmentsthatwillpositivelyaffectchildren'sbehaviourinanearly
learningsetting.
3. Recognizeresiliencyinchildrenandit'sinfluenceonthechild'sabilitytohandlestressintheirlife.
4. Recognizechallengingbehaviourinchildrenanddescribemotivesandstrategiestosupportthechildatanentry
level.
Intheirfirstfieldpracticalexperience,studentswillusetheirunderstandingofchilddevelopmentandtheirobservation
skillstorecognizedevelopmentallyappropriatebehaviouranddesignopportunitiestoadvancechildren'sabilitytoself
regulate.

ProgramStandards
TheMinistryofTraining,CollegesandUniversitiesoverseesthedevelopmentandthereviewofstandardsforprogramsof

Allevaluationcomponentsaredueonthedateandtimestatedonthiscourseoutline.
AlltestsandassignmentresultswillberecordedintheD2Lgradebookandreleasedtothestudentswithintwo
weeksaftertheassignment/testduedate.Testquestionsmayormaynotbereturnedtothestudents,however,
facultywilltakeupthetestmaterials/conceptshighlightingareasofstrengthsandweaknessidentifiedinthe
studentresponses.Thiscanbedoneonlineorinclass.
Ifthereisaconcernorquestionaboutthemarkingofatestorassignment,thestudentmustcontactthefaculty
withinoneweekofthereleaseofthegradewithevidence(textbook,reputablewebsite,lecturenotes)toprovide
rationalefortheirposition.
Makeuparrangementsfortests/assignmentsarenotnormallyallowed,however,intheeventofadocumented
illness,emergencyordeathofanimmediatefamilymember,whichprohibitsthestudentfromwritingthetest,
makeupprovisionsmaybeprovided.Allowanceswillonlybeconsideredifthecommunication(emailorvoicemail)
tothefacultyoccursbeforethescheduledtest/assignment.Inthecaseofamissedtest,failuretoinformfaculty
beforethetestwillresultinamarkof0.Rescheduledtestmustbewrittenwithinthreeschooldaysfromthe
originallyscheduleddate.Whenlongtermillnessorotherextremecircumstancemakesitimpossibleforthetestto
betakenwithinthreedays,thesituationwillbedealtwithonanindividualbasis.
Lateassignmentswillbepenalized10%adayforthefirstthreedays.Afterthefourthday,theassignmentwillbe
gradedasazero.
Coursesmaycontainspecificassessmentsthatrequiresuccessfulcompletioninordertodemonstrate
accomplishmentofthelearningoutcomesforthecourse.Thesewillbespecificallydetailedoneachcourse

StudentEngagement
Studentsandfacultyareexpectedtointeractinaprofessionalandpositivemanner.Thisincludes:being
respectful,settinghighexpectationsandstandards,demonstratingprofessionalism,beingengaged,staying
connectedandcommunicatingeffectivelyandbeingconsistent.SeetheStudentRightsandResponsibilitiesPolicy
forfurtherclarity.
Foradultlearnersinpostsecondaryeducation,thecollegecannotstipulatethatattendanceismandatory(except
fortestingpurposes),however,researchhasshownthatattendancecontributessignificantlytosuccessinthe
classroom,laborfield.Somecourseshowever,focusalmostexclusivelyondemonstratedskillbasedapplied
learningpractice.Attendanceintheseclassesisthereforehighlyrecommended.Earlyinthesemester,individual
facultywillprovidespecificattendanceexpectationsforthesecourses.Ifclasses/labsaremissed,forthese
courses,thelearnerwillbeinjeopardyoffailingthecourse,semesterand/orprogram.Studentsaresolely
responsibleforacquiringmissedclassroomworkincludinghandoutsandassignments.
Studentswhoarelateforclassareadisruptiontotheirclassmatesandhaveanegativeimpactonthelearning
environment.Yourfacultywillsharehis/herlatepoliciesearlyinthesemester.Forreasonsrelatingtoclassroom
managementandorlaboratorysafety,latestudentsmayberefusedentry.
Inanefforttopromoteoptimalengagement,electroniccommunicationdevices,exceptthoseapprovedby
