UNIT 1
In this module, you are expected to know

more about the stage of Puberty which you

will undergo and learn how to be
independent. We will do things like preparing
healthy meals, washing and ironing clothes to
enhance skills on being independent. You will
also find out the truth as to how Puberty
affects your life at home and in school and
why we need to go through it.

What is Puberty?

When does Puberty start?

initiated by hormone signals from the brain to
the gonads (the ovaries and testes)
In response, the gonads produce a variety of
hormones that stimulate the growth, function,
or transformation of brain, bones, muscle,
blood, skin, hair, breasts, and private parts

Hi! Im Terry. Do you ever feel like I do? Like your
whole bodys changing. Sometimes, I think an alien
has taken over mine. It seems every day Brings a
new change.

One of the things I notice is that none of my clothes

seem to fit for very long. My jeans are too short (or
my legs are too long.) My T-shirts are too tight. Even
my feet seem to grow a size every six months. I kind
of like being bigger though. My parents say Ill be
taller than they are.

Im not sure how I feel about some of the changes.

For example, I have hair in places Ive never had hair
in before. I think Ill need to start shaving. And
theres someone in my class that I really like.
Whenever were close, I get kind of nervous, and
then I start to blush. What a klutz!
Some of the changes are just embarrassing. I worry
about body odor, even though I shower and use
deodorant everyday. And then, theres the subject of
pimples. Well, we all know about them. Just when
youre getting ready to go someplace special, and
you know that someone will be there, a pimple
appears. Its like magic.

Sometimes I wonder what will happen next. I

realize Im becoming an adult, and I do feel
more grown up than I did two years ago.
Everyone seems to survive puberty. I guess I will
too. In fact, Im kind of looking forward to
seeing what will happen next.

When does Puberty start?

Puberty usually starts between the ages of 8

to 13 for girls and 10 to 15 for boys.

What happens to my body once I

am experiencing puberty?
You gain weight.

You might grow 4 or more inches in a year.

 Girls will start developing breasts.

Boys will grow an adams apple and will have

lower voices

 Acne pimples, or skin bumps, may appear on

your face, neck, and back. Face becomes oily.

Hair growth and body odor may occur under

your arms and in your genital, or pubic, area
between your legs.

 Boys will develop facial hair and chest hairs

 The hips of girls will grow wider

 Boys shoulders will be broader

Preteens have a huge appetite and always
seem to be hungry

Preteens have a greater need for sleep and

may sleep later on weekends than when they

were younger

MENARCHE

CIRCUMCISION

 The ovaries of the female produce eggs, while

the testicles of the male produce sperm.

The female menstruates while the male
ejaculates a milk-like substance called semen.
The sperm is discharged through semen. This
usually happens when the male is asleep and
known as wet dreams.
Wet dreams occurs naturally in boys and
happens when there is excess semen in the body

BOYS HYGIENE
Boys should undergo circumcision
CIRCUMCISION is a minor operation where the skin

covering the tips of the penis is removed.

This is done to prevent accumulation of dirt in that area
which can cause irritation or infection
Boys get circumcised by the age of 12-14 in a hospital or
clinic.
Doctors use anaesthesia to make the operation
painless.
In the rural areas, circumcision is done by a quack
doctor. Herbal plants are used for curing and healing.
Guava leaves are boiled. Than, the extract is used to
clean or wash the wound

PROPER CARE AFTER CICUMCISION

For the wound to heal fast:
Wear loose shirts or pajamas. This helps you to move
freely and carry yourself comfortably
Refrain from touching the wound
Clean the wound as prescribed by the doctor or by
using water from boiled guava leaves
Always keep the wound dry. Cotton or plaster may
be used for this purpose
Maintain cleanliness in body and clothing
Refrain from running or playing basketball or other
related sports
