EXECUTIVESUMMARY
OurNationiscurrentlysufferingthroughanobesityepidemicandchangeis
imperative.Wecancombatthisepidemicbyeducatingchildrenontheimportanceof
propernutritionandprovidingthemaccesstolocal,freshfruitsandvegetables.
ChildrenarethefutureofthisNation,sobyencouragingbettereatinghabitswecan
helpshapeasuccessful,healthyfuture.ColorYourCalorieshopestoeducate
elementarystudentsatSuttonElementaryinMuncie,INontheimportanceof
consumingfruitsandvegetableseverydaybyprovidingthemwithopportunitiestotrya
multitudeoffruitsandvegetablesduringtheirlunchbreaks.
BACKGROUNDINFORMATION
Thenationalaverageforregularproduceconsumptionisamere57.7%(Sharpe,
2015).Itwasalsoreportedthat16.7millionchildrenhadlimitedavailabilitytosafeand
nutritiousfood,suchasfreshfruitsandvegetables(Nord,Andrews&Carlson,2009).
Unfortunately,thedietsofAmericanchildrenarenutritionallysubparandthesignificant
amountofemptycaloriesconsumedthroughsoda,fruitdrinks,dairy,desserts,grain
desserts,pizza,andwholemilkcouldbecontributingtothisgrowingepidemic(Reedy&
KrebsSmith,2010).
Nutritionhastheabilitytoshapechildrensfuture,soitisimperativethatproper
nutritionistaughtinschoolsthroughoutourNation.Propernutritioncandecreaseones
riskofbecomingoverweightorobese.Sadly,Indianawasratedthe15thmostobese
stateintheUnitedStates(Lang,2011).In2007,theobesityrateforchildrenages6to
11yearsoldwas20%accordingtothePresidentsCouncilonFitness,Sports,&
Nutrition(Dietaryguidelinesfor,2010).Thesealarminglyhighratessimplystressthe
importanceofdevelopinganeducationalprogramforSuttonElementarywiththefocus
ontheimportanceofconsumingtherecommendedamountsoffruitsandveggiesevery
day.

GOALS,OBJECTIVES,ANDSIGNIFICANCE
Goal
:ByDecember2015,therewillbea40%increaseinthenumberofSutton
Elementarystudentswhoareconsumingthedailyrecommendedamountoffruitsand
vegetablesatleast4timesaweek.
Objectives
:
1. ByDecember2015,75%ofSuttonElementarystudentswillhaveimprovedon
theirfruitandvegetableknowledgeaccordingtotheirpretestandposttest
scores.
2. ByDecember2015,40%oftheSuttonElementarySchoolfamiliesreportmaking
thenutritionalsnackprovidedontherecipecardwedistribute.
3. ByDecember2015,60%ofSuttonElementarystudentsparentsreportan
increaseintheamountoffruitsandvegetablestheypurchasefortheirfamilies.
Significance
:Webelieveourgoalandthreeobjectiveswillallowustopositively
influencethenutritionalhabitsofstudentsatSuttonElementarySchool.Webelieveour
programwillencouragestudentstoeatmorefruitsandvegetables,becausetheywill
havetheopportunitytotryavastvarietyoflocalproducethroughoutthedurationofthe
program.
METHODSANDTIMELINE
ColorYourCalorieswillbea12weeklongeducationalprogramfocusedonthe
importanceofpracticinggoodnutritionandconsuminganadequatenumberoffruitand
vegetableservings,specificallydevelopedforthestudentsatSuttonElementary.The
$2500grantfromSkoopandtheChefAnnFoundationwouldbeextremelybeneficialfor
theimplementationofthisprogram.TheprogramwouldbegininSeptemberoncethe
crazinessofthenewschoolyearhassettledinandwouldconcludeattheendof
November,beforestudentsgoontheirwinterbreak.SinceSuttonElementaryeducates
approximately365students,thebudgetwouldallowprogramplannerstospend
approximately$6onfresh,localgrownproduceforeachstudent.Bypartneringwith
thelocalfarmersmarket,wewouldhavetheabilitytopurchasesixvegetablesandsix
fruitsforthestudentstotryduringtheirallotted30minutelunchperiod.

EachweekonWednesdaystudentswillhavetheopportunitytogetaservingof
eitherfreshfruitorfreshvegetables,alternatingbetweenthetwoeachweek.Each
weekwewillalsogiveeverystudentarecipecardcontainingarecipeusingthatweeks
specificfruitorvegetable,forthestudentstotakehome.Thiswillhopefullyencourage
theirparentstogetinvolvedinensuringtheirchildrenareconsumingthedaily
recommendedamountoffruitandvegetables.Wehopethatourrecipecardsalso
promoteourprogramandencourageparentstousethisnewknowledgeasavaluable
resourcetoreshapetheireatinghabitsathome,ifnecessary.
Sincewearepartneringwiththelocalfarmersmarket,weplantodisseminate
therecipecardstothefarmerstodistributetotheircustomers.Ourrecipecardswill
containthenameofourprogramandourprogramgoal.Wehopethattherecipecards
willpromoteourprogramwithinthecommunity,sowecangainevenmorepositive
supportfromoutsidetheschool.Wealsowillworkwiththeschoolprincipaltoincludea
weeklysummaryofourprogramintheschoolsnewsletter.Wewillinformparentsof
thefruitorvegetableoftheweek,aswellasincludeaquickfactabouttheimportance
ofpropernutrition.
Asleadprogramplanner,AlexisDeWeesewillbeinchargeoftheongoing
activitieseachweekatSuttonElementary.Shewillbetheliaisonbetweentheprogram
plannersandtheschooladministration.Alexiswillalsobeinchargeofrecruiting
approximatelyfiveparentvolunteerseachweektoaidinthedistributionofthefruits,
vegetables,andrecipecardsduringthechildrenslunchbreak.Thankfully,EricGrim
theprincipalofSuttonElementaryis100%supportiveofimplementingColorYour
Caloriesinhisschool.Hehasalreadymentionedtheprogramtohisfacultyandmany
teachersagreedtoshortentheirlunchbreakonWednesdaystoaidusinprogram
implementation.SuttonElementaryhasfourlunchroommonitorsforeachlunchhour
whowillalsobehelpfulinhandingouttheweeklyfruitorvegetable.Bypartneringwith
theschooladministrationandthefarmersmarket,ColorYourCaloriesissettingitself
upforcompletesuccess.

EVALUATION
Duringthefirstweekofschool,wewilladministershort,gradespecific
questionnairesinordertogainvaluableinformationonthestudentsknowledgeonfruits
andvegetables.Wewillkeepthisdatathroughthedurationoftheprogram.Attheend
ofthe12weekprogram,wewillreadministerthequestionnairesandanalyzethe
successofourprogrambycomparingstudentspretestandposttestscores.Wewill
considerColorYourCaloriesasuccessifwereachouroverarchinggoalhowever,we
understandthatthefirstrunofaprogrammaynotbeassuccessful,asexpected.Due
tothat,wehopetoimproveuponourprogrambyhonestlyevaluatingallaspectsof
ColorYourCalories.
Wewillalsodisseminatesurveystotheschoolfaculty,specificallyteachers,to
gathertheiropinionsandsuggestions.Ourfacultysurveywillbebasedontheteachers
opinionsonthesuccessofourprogram.Wewillaskteachersiftheybelievethe
programwasdevelopedinawaythatwascustomizabletothegradelevelofthe
students.TheteachersofSuttonElementarywillbeagreatadvantagetoColorYour
Calories,becausetheyhavetheknowledgeandunderstandingofthebestteaching
methodsforthestudents,whichasprogramplannerswemaylacksinceweour
degreesarenotfocusedoneducatingwithchildren.Byworkingcloselywiththe
teachersandschooladministratorsthroughoutthedurationoftheprogram,wewillbe
abletoconsistentlygatherfeedbackontheprogram.

BUDGETNARRATIVE
IfawardedtheMissionNutritiongrantfromSkoopandtheChefAnnFoundation,
ColorYourCaloriesexpectstoutilize$2,245ofthe$2,500grant.Wedecidednotto
budgetoutthegrantinitsentirety,atthismomentintime,toallowforunexpectedcosts.
Wewouldnotutilizeanyoftheawardedmoneyforpersonnelortravelcosts,sincethe
programislocallylocated.Themajorityofourbudgetisallocatedtopurchasinglocal
fruitsandvegetablesfromfarmerswhoattendthelocalfarmersmarketeachweek.By
purchasingourfruitsandvegetablesinbulkfromlocalfarmers,weareabletofundour
projectfor12weekson$6perstudent.Ourtotalexpenditureforfreshfruitsand
vegetablesforthestudentssumsto$2,190.Theonlyotherexpenditurewehaveisthe
costofpaperforourrecipecards,studentquestionnaires,andprogramevaluation
formsforthefaculty.SuttonElementaryhasgraciouslyagreedtoallowustoutilize
theircopymachinetoproducethesematerials,sowedonothavetobudgetforinkor
otherprintingsupplies.Weplantodeveloparecipecardforall365studentsforthe12
weekdurationofColorYourCalories,whichtotalsto4,380recipecards.Sinceweare
goingtoprinttworecipecardsoneachsheetofpaper,thestudentrecipecardswillcall
for2,190sheetsofcopypaper.Weplantodistributeapproximately150recipecards
eachweekatthelocalfarmersmarket,sowewillalsoneed900sheetsofcopypaper
forthat.Inaddition,wewillneedtoprintapproximately730pretestandposttest
questionnairesforstudentstocompleteand50evaluationformsforthefacultyofSutton
ElementarySchool.Inordertokeepourbudgetlow,wewillpurchaseacaseofcopy
paper,whichcontains5,000sheetsofpaperfromStaplesfor$55.Ourcurrentbudget
planleaves$255foranyunexpectedcoststhatmayarisethroughoutthedurationof
ColorYourCalories.

DOCUMENTINGOURPROGRAM
Weplantodocumentourprogrambyutilizingmanydifferenttoolsavailabletousinthe
schoolsettingofSuttonElementary.Wewillgainpermissionfromparentsto
photographtheirchildrenwhiletheyareenjoyingthefreshfruitsandvegetables.We
willalsoincludecommentsfromourfacultyevaluations,sowecangetaglimpseofthe
program.Programplannerswillalsoberequiredtocompleteaweeklywriteupofthe
program,includingtheiropinions,suggestionsforimprovement,andanystories
relevanttotheprogram.
