Mentor Teachers Name: Ms. Young and Ms. Larkin-Smith __

Grade Level (s)/Subject Area(s): 6th Science and 7th Mathematics
Instructions to the teacher candidate: Please reflect on your professional performance, and
respond to each of the following prompts.
1.

In terms of the ADEPT Performance Standards, what are your professional strengths?
How have you built on these strengths so far, and how do you plan to do so in the future?
a. I would classify my profession strengths as having the ability to monitor and
adjust instruction as need be, possessing effective classroom management that
maximizes class time, giving explicit instruction for classroom activities and
assignments, advocating for student success, implementing a variety of
instructional media, and providing opportunities for success at all competency
levels. Each of these strengths has become more refined since the beginning of
student teaching. Through practice, mentorship, and leaning from mistakes I have
developed these skills. My mentor teachers were great assets in my professional
development; they allowed me to learn as I go and provided assistance and
guidance when asked. A big part in the growth of my skills was asking for the
assistance and guidance from my cooperating teachers, the best way to learn is to
ask those who came before and those who have the credentials I aspire to have.
As I progress on toward my future endeavors, I plan on growing stronger in my
skills through the same means that I have now. There is always room to grow and
others who can help in that growth.

2.

In terms of the ADEPT Performance Standards, what are your professional challenges?
How do you plan to meet these challenges?
a. The biggest challenges for me is establishing a long-range plan, planning
assessments, and using data. I name these as my challenges because of the
limitations that the district has placed on assessments. The district has required
that all summative assessments be administered through multiple test, that are
scanned into the computer for more accurate grading and more convince in adding
grades to the grade book. To me this is a limitation of how I can assess my
students and their learning. However, this is also an opportunity to be more
creative when making formative assessments. I tend to lack that creativity even
though my desire is to provide variety in assessing my students. I often find it
challenging to meet the needs of all my students when establishing a long-range
plan and creating assessments. I feel that this is challenging for me because I want
to reach all my students and maintain my high expectations. I do not want to plan
assessments and activity that may be too rudimentary for my higher performing

students yet, I do not want to make them too complex or straining for my lower
performing students. I do believe that I can meet these challenges and that they
will not remain as challenges for long. Through repetition, making mistakes,
surveying students interest, and seeking assistance from other professionals; I
will progressively master these challenges.
3.

Describe your students overall progress and achievement. What insights have you
gained into ways to improve student progress and achievement?
a. The pre-test scores were very low, students were not able to comprehend the
questions being asked of them, a few of them were not familiar with the vocabulary
used either. I took the test and highlighted the questions that were missed the
most and made sure that I thoroughly went over those particular concepts when it
came time to teach it. Also, during my instruction I would use the vocabulary on
the test in my everyday instruction so that the students would have at least heard
the words being used as well as written the words. The post-test were substantially
higher than the pre-test, however I had a few that fell between the cracks. In order
to reach my students who are falling far below the rest, I could have done more in
between formative assessments so that I could have gotten to them before the
they were lost.

4.

How will you use the knowledge you have gained through this professional selfassessment to promote your continuous professional growth and collaboration?
a. I will be more apt to take chances and ask more questions. I learned that when I
took chances in my instructional strategies, I learned what the students grasped
onto and I learned what did not promote success. I learned what it meant to be an
advocate for students and that those who are truly advocates are the real effective
teachers.
