Creation vs. Evolution
The earliest form of life was estimated at approximately 3.5 billion years
ago (Smithsonian Museum). According to the early studies of earth, the planet
was only able to sustain life only after cooling down and creating gases from
volcanoes. What I dont understand is where mankind originated. There is a
popular debate between creation and evolution but I am stuck in the middle, I
dont see how faith and a book could explain the meaning of life. How are their
multiple signs of ancient footprints and different layers in the earth that dated
back long before mankind? Why do humans have almost the exact protein
sequence as chimpanzees? The list goes on and on favoring science over
creation.
In my opinion, I personally dont understand religion; I grew up in a nonreligious household even though my parents classify themselves as Buddhists.
Going through life, many events have passed such as my father being diagnosed
with heart valve disease, my cousin dying from cancer or when my dog suffered
from heartworms. Many of these events have led me to challenge the belief in a
god. Why would a god (someone who we praise and respect) create such a
gruesome world? Many nights have gone in desperation, praying and asking for
answers to why these events have happened. Through experience, I havent

gained anything from praying to a god at all; everything that I have now is from
my own personal gain.
In our current modern society, the universal explanation for the worlds
creation is depicted through word in The Bible. The current methods for
spreading the word of religion are through the media (television/radio) and also
through books. I have a fond memory from a couple years back when I saw a
church protest on television stating that the well-known trading card game,
Pokmon was a game that stimulated a satanic world. Christians believed this
mans theory only because of the fictional characters in this demonic world such
as Haunters ability to hypnotize, Kadabras ability to emit negative energy and
ultimately, the starter Pokmon that the player first chooses (Charmander,
Squirtle and Bulbasaur). The starter Pokmon were only called due to their
abilities to Evolve. This propaganda was initially quite humorous to me, seeing
how desperate some religions have become to push their controversial beliefs
among gullible individuals around them. It is as if they have become so
dependent and fixated on religion that it has taken over their lives and has
enslaved them in chains.
In the earlier years up to the 18th century, most Europeans believed that
God created the world in seven days according to The Bible. A British scientist
soon challenged this orthodoxy by the name of Charles Darwin, the brain behind
the Natural Selection theory. Darwin was the first individual to lay a foundation for
the theory of evolution. Charles Darwin ultimately transformed the way that we
perceived the world and mankind, challenging the previously accepted biblical

3
orthodoxy. There were five different theories that Darwin hypothesized; evolution,
common descent, species multiply, gradualism and natural selection. There are
many examples in todays world that point to natural selection and how an
organism evolves in order to stay fit for their environment such as insects and
their resistance to pesticides. When an organism reproduces, they are able to
pass their unique combination of genes to their offsprings, giving their offsprings
the ideal genetics for their continued survival. Darwin had a grand idea that these
all werent different but they all occurred together, causing a species to gradually
change over time so that they can best suit their environment allowing them to
have higher chances of surviving and reproducing.
These theories provide proof that natural selection allows an organism to
evolve and that apes are the origins of all humans living on earth today. Even
though I support and side with Science over religion, I believe that those who
believe in religion are just exploring the real world and I have no business
bashing their faith and belief in a god. Nobody knows the true meaning behind
human life but to me, the meaning of life is to leave a legacy behind, passing on
our DNA to our offsprings. The main question that should be asked about
evolution is Do you UNDERSTAND evolution? rather than, Do you BELIEVE in
evolution?
