Aleigha Simerly
Title of Activity: Colorful Milk Swirl Experiment
Age Level: 1st Grade Science
Duration: Set-up: 5 minutes Procedure: 5-10 minutes
to change
State Standards: Indiana State Standards Grade 1

** Subject

Standard 1: Physical Science

Core Standard: Describe objects in terms of the materials that
compose them and in terms of their physical properties
Objectives: In this lesson, students will observe the results of mixing
the milk with food coloring and dish soap. The students will also
understand chemical reactions that take place once you place your
cotton swab into the milk. The students need to observe what takes
place when you place the cotton swab into the mixture. Using your
observations, you can draw what is seen once you place the cotton ball
into the mixture.
Materials:

1
Styrofoam plate
Milk (enough to cover the bottom of the plate)
4
Different food colorings
Dishwashing liquid (Dawn)
Cotton Swab

Opener:
Have you thought about mixing your milk with anything
besides cereal?
Or for those of you who had kids, adding food coloring to milk
instead of the
flavoring?
Procedure:
1. Fill your plate with milk and let settle.
2. Add several drops of different food coloring close together
(make sure it is separate) in the middle of the milk.
3. Dip cotton swab into the dish soap then touch the cotton swab
to the milks middle near the food coloring. OBSERVE THIS
REACTION!!!
4. Move the swab to different areas of the plate to see more
reactions.
Assessment: Questions asked throughout lesson

What happened when you placed the food coloring into

the milk?
- What would happen if we placed it in skim milk?
- What would happen if we used water instead of milk?
- What would happen if we added soap into the middle
instead of food coloring and food coloring onto the
cotton swab instead of the middle of the milk?
We will break into groups so you can observe together.
One group will switch milk to water, one group will switch
to skim milk, one will put food coloring on cotton swab and
dish soap in the milk, and one will try chocolate milk.
Classroom discussion will take place to talk about the
differences that we observed throughout altering our
procedure.

Questions to Ponder. Thoughts after Observation

How are each of these materials used?
What is milk made up of?
Why didnt the water work the same way as the milk?
What other ways could we
