Computers on Wheels for two weeks. MCMS should add iPads and laptops to the
circulation policy so students can utilize technology at home.
checking out two e-books instead of one print and one e-book.
Creative Commons
The circulation policy is not affected by creative commons.
Scheduling Policy
Mitchell County Middle School Librarys hours of operation are 7:30 am until 3:45
pm. Students are allowed to check out books and take tests during the mornings
before announcements and also during their Reading / ELA class. They are also
allowed to come have quiet reading time in the sitting area for good behavior.
Teachers may sign up on a calendar in the library to utilize the research lab for whole
class activities. Students are encouraged to use the computers in the media center for
academic purposes. Teachers may send 4 students at a time to conduct research.
Students should have a note from the teacher including the length of time they are to
work in the center and the assignment. Teachers and media center staff will monitor
student access to the Internet. Students should not change screen savers or visit any
sites other than academic sites. Students using the computers inappropriately will be
asked to leave the computer and may receive a discipline referral. Overall, this media
center has a flexible/open access for student and teacher usage.
Analysis and Critique of Scheduling Policy
-Addressing the needs of the 21 century library and its learners
st
The scheduling policy of Mitchell County Middle School addresses the needs of the
21 century library and its learners by allowing students access to visit the library to
st
utilize computers, laptops, and the research lab. The scheduling policy could be
improved by creating longer operating hours at least one day a week for students to
complete assignments. As well as an online sign up system for teachers to utilize the
research lab.
-Addressing BYOT or BYOD (bring your own technology/device)
This school does not have a bring your own technology or bring your own device
policy. However, the administration has discussed incorporating BYOT or BYOD
days as an incentive for good behavior.
-Web 2.0 technologies
Web 2.0 technologies are not addressed in this policy. It would be beneficial to
provide teachers, students, and parents a list of Web 2.0 tools they could utilize and
how they could assist in student learning.
-E-books
The scheduling policy is not affected by e-books.
-Creative Commons
The circulation policy is not affected by creative commons.
Services Policy
The media center offers laminating and poster making services as well as Channel
One News. Laminating days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Materials to be laminated
must be submitted to the media center by 10:00am. Teachers wanting to make posters
must submit the document to Ms. English for her approval. Ms. English will initial the
back of the document. Channel One News may be accessed through televisions for
students to watch after school.
Although laminating and poster making services are ideal, they address the needs of
teachers. Channel One News is a positive aspect, as 21 century learners enjoy
st
watching television. The services policy could be improved by adding services such as
social media etiquette workshops for students.
-E-books
The services policy could provide students surveys to view what new books students
would like to receive an electronic copy of.
-Creative Commons
The services policy is not affected by creative commons. However, the media
specialist could provide a workshop informing students of what creative commons is
and how it can affect their education career.
Ethics and Legal Principles
MCMS adheres to the copyright law for print, non-print, and electronic media.
Teachers may visit this website if there are any questions about copyright laws.

Students and faculty must submit a signed Acceptable Use Policy provided by the
school system.
Analysis and Critique of Ethics and Legal Principles
-Addressing the needs of the 21 century library and its learners
st
These principles are aligned with the copyright law of the United States. Although this
law has information about digital media and devices, there is nothing specific to the
school. To successfully address the needs of the 21 century library and its learners,
st
the school librarian should host workshops for students informing them of ethical
information use, intellectual freedom, and patron confidentiality.
-Addressing BYOT or BYOD (bring your own technology/device)
This policy does not address BYOT/BYOD days; however, this plan could be
improved by stating rules and policies while utilizing school technology. The
