1.Where in the Russian Federation would you find Chechnya?

You could find Chechnya in Russias North Caucasus area.

2.How are the Chechens different from the RussiansThey are different because
they are an ethnic group which follows the Islamic faith. Theyabsolutely resist
Russian rule, and want their own independence from the country.
3.Did the Chechens gain independence from tsars Russia after the 1917 Russian
Revolution?Explain. They have only ever had brief periods of independence in
Chechnya. At one point, they joinedKabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia,
North Ossetia, and Ingushetia in their own SovietRepublic. However, the Soviet
Union came back and seized control of the area and turned itback into a Soviet
province. Therefore, no, the Chechens never truly gained independence forgood.
4.What did Stalin do to the Chechens during WWII? Why did he do this?Stalin
accused the Chechnya people of working with the Nazis during World War two.
Hedeported the entire population to areas of Siberia and Kazakhstan where they
had to stay andnot return to their homeland. He did this because many ethnic
groups during the war seized onthe opportunity it presented to break free and
become independent.
5.Who, and how was their fate changed?Boris Yeltsin opposed their desire to
become an independent nation after the area decided tocome up with the
Chechen All-National Congress. Because of this, he sent Russian troops in tofight
against the people, later becoming known as the First Chechen War. This war
became socrazy, and changed the ethnic minority group for good.
6.What was the First Chechen War? (Who started it? When? Why? Results? The first
Chechen war was started when Boris Yeltsin sent in troops to fight the
Chechenguerillas in order to stop their opposition for freedom from the Soviet
Union. This was from1994-1996, and because of it tens of thousands of civilians
died, but Chechen did indeedbecome independent for a little time after this.
7.When was the Second Chechen War? (Who started it? When? Why?
Results?)This was a war that occurred in August of 1999 when Chechnya militants
invaded onneighboring Russian republic known as Dagestan in order to support a
local separatistmovement. It became extremely violent, and five bombings
occurred in Russia over just a tenday period, leaving around 300 people dead.
Because of this, Moscow blamed Chechen rebelsfor these bombings and fatalities.
8.Prior to his death in 2006, the separatist Basayev was deemed to be responsible
for the mostnotorious events to that point in time. Identify this event. How many
deceased militants in thisevent were NOT Chechen? Why might this be a
significant change in the Chechen Wars?He was held accountable for the
bombings of a school in 2004. There were 32 militants, but onlythree or four of
them actually happened to be Chechen. This is a big change for Chechen
Warsbecause now violence is targeting individual officials of the government
officials rather than large groups of civilians. Now they are fighting to fight, even if the

people dont happen to be apart of that ethnic group, which a huge change from
before.
9.According to the American ambassador to Russia, what terrorist group is
assisting the Chechenrebels? How/ might Americans who were once sympathetic
to the Chechen cause forindependence from the Russian Federation have
changed?According to the American ambassador, there are many ties that link
between Al-Qaeda and theChechens. Americans have been directly affected a
large amount from the Al-Qaeda group andthey seem to be a large threat to our
nation, so any American who can see they are workingtogether could now see the
Chechens as a threat as well. Anyone who could be associated witha group like AlQaeda clearly doesnt deserve any type of sympathetic emotion to any Americans
this day in society.
10.Do you believe the Russians should grant Chechnya their independence? Why
or why not?In my opinion, I believe it is a good idea for Russia to grant Chechnya
their own independence. They hold much resentment towards the Russian
government, and all they are going to do iskeep causing harm if they happen to
be a part of their rule. I believe that if they are their ownnation, their desires will
be complete, and maybe they would start to break off and leave theRussians
alone. Bombings and terrorist attacks could be much easier avoided this way as
well. Its becoming more of a burden and fear to have them apart of their nation, and all
they want todo is rebel against the nation. They need to let them free while they
still can, and before anymore problems and chaos breaks out over this issue
again.
