LATTICE MULTIPLICATION

Date:

4/22

Subject: Math

Grade:3/ 4

Goals/Objectives/Standards (Please include the NETS standards):

CCSS
4.OA.A.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole number answers using the
four operations.
4.NBT.B.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit
numbers, using strategies based on place value and the base of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by
using equations, rectangular arrays, and or area models.
NETS
1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
b. Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital
tools and resources
3. Model digital age work and learning teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes
representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society.
a. Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new
technologies and situations
Timeline/structure of lesson:
Time
Opening/Framing the Lesson/Introduction/Early Assessment
Monitor/Feedback
Students have been working on a unit on multiplication with two
digit numbers. Today we will be learning an alternative way to
calculate multiplication problems.

The Lesson Structure:

-Complete a five minute review lesson of regular multiplication.
Ask students what things they like or dislike or struggle with
while they do regular multiplication.
- Explain that there is a different way to solve multiplication
problems called the lattice method. Show this video to the
class: http://www.tubechop.com/watch/5761500 . The video will
be emailed to students Google accounts for them to refer to at
any time.
-After the video, do three examples with the class using a
projection system. Allow students to come up and help solve the
examples
-Next, students will use the Educreate Ap along with a QR
Scanner to complete a scavenger hunt around the outside of
the school. I will have hidden math problems taped around
various places on the playground and school exterior that
students will solve using Lattice multiplication. Each problem
will be paired with a QR code that will reveal the answer.
Students will find the problems, show their work on Educreate,
and then scan the QR code to check their work.

-Ask several questions as

an informal assessment
-have students follow along
on an Ipad while the
teacher does the examples

-The assignment will consist

of word problems, as well as
problems presented in various
ways with variables,
parenthesis, and may be set
up vertically or horizontally.
-Students may work in
partners to find the
problems but must solve
them and show work
individually.
-Students will be
encouraged to double
check their work by solving
the problem in a traditional

Closing/Assessment
To complete the lesson, students will write a short paragraph
on the similarities and differences of Lattice and Traditional
multiplication methods. Students will save their Educreation
documents to be reviewed as a formal assessment by the
teacher.

-I will use the short writing
assignment to check for in
depth understanding of the
Lattice method.
