EDUC 6331
Dr. Walters
Spring 2015

Competency 001: The principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating
the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of
learning that is shared and supported by the school community.
My experience in this competency focus on the campus culture. The culture and
environment at Alice Johnson Junior High is changing into a college readiness
school. The hallways have college mascot signs and there are college pendants in
the halls and cafeteria.
The AVID (Advance Via Individual Determination) students are becoming the
cool kids and wearing variety of college hoodies after researching and creating
pendants.

Competency 002: The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate with all
members of the school community, respond to diverse interests and needs, and
mobilize resources to promote student success.
My principal Mr. Pichon and my assistant principal Mr. Lewis are both on the
AVID Site District, they are supportive and model the importance of college
readiness. AVID college initiative will encourage students to do their best and
practice proven strategies.

Competency 003: The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness, and in an
ethical and legal manner.

The first day of spring break there were five charter

buses organized by AFT took parents, teachers, and
students to Austin, Texas for lobby day. Channelview
High School Honor Students were recognized. Alice
Johnson Junior High GT Students also went to learn of
our state legislation process.

Competency 004: The principal knows how to facilitate the design and
implementation of curricula and strategic plans that enhance teaching and learning;
ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction, resources, and assessment; and promote
the use of varied assessments to measure student performance.

The event of STAAR Night addressed every area of this

competency, it was great and learning experience. I
understand the importance of follow up, even when you
have experienced staff it is still absolutely necessary to
check and double check.
Communication is key in the implementation of
anything, I learned that coworkers may like you, but
they will not take instructions from you unless they here
it from the principal.

Competency 005: The principal knows how to advocate, nurture, and sustain an
instructional program and a campus culture that are conducive to student learning
and staff professional growth.
I have been on more than one committee this year and witness the principal
involvement, I see delegate and facility, but his support for staff interest is
outstanding.

Competency 006: The principal knows how to implement a staff evaluation and
development system to improve the performance of all staff members, select and
implement appropriate models for supervision and staff development, and apply the
legal requirements for personnel management.
A requirement of this program is to have a mentor and my mentor was so helpful
with my projects, technology, and time. There were times when students were in
his office and when he was on the phone, but he would always still motion for me
to come in. My mentor allowed me the opportunity to see him do his job and he
would explain why he handle things the way he did. He shared with details about
resume, he will not consider a candidate that has less than six refernces.

Competency 007: The principal knows how to apply organizational, decisionmaking, and problem-solving skills to ensure an effective learning environment.
I attended three board meeting and hear discussions on compensation plans. The
decision-making and problem-solving were very intense, everyone was civil and
orderly, but skills are definitely require for effectiveness'.

Competency 008: The principal knows how to apply principles of effective

leadership and management in relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource
utilization, financial management, and technology use.
I did not get much experience in campus budgeting or financial management this
information was marginable at best. My mentor had little information share, he
spoke of a small budget for a department head, which keeps decreasing they were
in a range of $500 to $2000.
We used technology to inform the students of cyber safety.

Competency 009: The principal knows how to apply principles of leadership and
management to the campus physical plant and support systems to ensure a safe and
effective learning environment.
My mentor advised me to update our dismissal procedures to ensure a orderly,
safe, and timely dismissal. We have one direction hallways and staff in position to
keep the flow of traffic moving. Staff have hallway positions hanging out at hall
intersections is prohibited and restrooms are lock before dismissal to discourage
hanging out, fighting, and missing buses.
