Week 5 WG Reading/Grammar/Language Lessons

February 2nd- 6th


Weekly Story: Excerpt from- The Talented Clementine by Sara Pennypacker
*See Essential Skills (below on last page) to know what students will be expected to be able
to do by the end of the week with standards included.
Time: 8:30-9:30 reading skills and grammar/language combined (Monday, Wednesday)
11:40-12:20 grammar and handwriting separate from reading skills (Tuesdays only)
Review Day: Thursday (with some testing as well)
Friday: Testing Day
Day 1:

Read through the weekly story aloud in whole group


o Asking students questions throughout and modeling what a good reader does (ask
and answer questions while reading)
o Work through the Unit 4 Week 2 tri-fold brochure together (work through a little
bit of it each day and may have students work on it for homework as well)
The brochure reviews all of the essential skills for the week
Introduce Point of View and Realistic Fiction
o Who is telling this story?
o What supporting details from the story can we find to determine the narrators
point of view?
o Do you agree or disagree with the authors point of view?
o What is realistic fiction and can we identify what makes this story realistic
fiction?
Find other books to read throughout the week that help teach point of view and realistic
fiction.
Have students re-read the weekly story several times for homework to prepare them for
the comprehension test on Friday.
Morning Journal: Writing from a different point of view than your own.

Day 2:

Introduce vocabulary words for the week


o What kinds of actions can we come up with to help us remember the words
better?
o Creating posters in groups to illustrate vocabulary words, use in a sentence, and
provide an example. Then, presenting posters to whole class.

o Test over vocabulary on Friday


Review prefixes and root words (Graphic organizer and worksheet)
English workbook pg. 140
Begin talking about contractions
o Activities to practice using contractions ( Have the students moving around and
manipulating words to make contractions- Human Contractions)

Day 3:

Work more through weekly story brochure reviewing realistic fiction and point of view
English workbook pg. 120
Talk about plural words
Need to review syllables (have worksheets to practice syllables for morning work, but
also need to review possibly in whole group)
Review prefixes
Go over spelling words
o And practice plural words together because spelling words are all plural words.
Changing words into their plural form and putting them into a visual chart on the
board with what rule they fall under (add ies, -es, etc.)

Day 4:

8:00-9:00 Review prefixes, root words, contractions, etc.


9:00-10:00 Take test over weekly skills

Day 5:

Take comprehension and vocabulary tests
