Overall Class Reflection
I would like to begin this reflection by admitting that my first impression of this
class was completely inaccurate; following my professors description of the class work
and activities we would be undertaking, I believed that I would not be unable to
successfully complete each assignment in a way that would meet or exceed my personal
goals or the expectations of my professor. Although, I can't speak for my professor, I can
say that I was able to exceed my own expectations by creating work that I was proud to
hand in for a grade.
As happy as I am with the grades that I received on these assignments, I do feel
that I was at somewhat of a disadvantage when attempting to understand the necessary
criteria for each. As an Advanced Placement student in high school, I was not required to
enroll in the prerequisite English course at UCF because I had completed an equivalent
class during my senior year of high school. In this Advanced Placement class, we were
not required to learn Devitts' concept of sponsorship, nor the concept of genre; I had
never before heard of a Literacy Narrative, Genre Analysis or Annotated Bibliography
until the day these papers were assigned to me to write on my own. The process of
understanding these new concepts was made exponentially more difficult by the fact that
I was required not only to understand them with absolutely no background, but to
manifest this understanding into an adequately written paper before the respective
deadline.
Having said that, I am all the more proud that the hard work I put into writing
exceptional papers was recognized by the high score that I received on each assignment. I
surprised myself with the amount of effort I put into this class, as well as the amount of

new knowledge that I am taking with me as I move forward in my academic career. I
know this will not be the last time I encounter these forms of writing and I believe that
the experience gained in this class will be a great tool in passing future classes. The
Genre Analysis, Annotated Bibliography and Literature Review gave me such amazing
insight into the type of writing that will be expected of me as I continue on in my future
career as an Anthropologist. Most undergraduate anthropology students are capable of
understanding the topic that peer reviewed journal articles are discussing, but there is a
new level of comprehension that comes with understanding why anthropologists write the
way they do, how this writing style came to be, what the context of each article is and the
reason for the way they frame their argument; these are all pieces of information that I am
now able to decipher when reading peer reviewed journals such as The American Journal
of Anthropology.
Overall, I would say that this class, Enc 1102, has expanded my writing ability in
a way that will positively impact my life as a current student and as a future forensic
anthropologist. I am completely satisfied with my performance in this class and I believe
that the collection of works presented in this portfolio properly display not only my work
ethic and understanding of the necessary concepts, but also my ability to somewhat
master a website design program that I have never even considered using before this very
moment.
