DISCIPLESHIP
What does disciple mean?

Refers to a student, pupil or apprentice

In Jesus times, it meant to be a follower of a religious leader or philosopher
A disciple emulates the life of the teacher, and spreads the teachings to others

Christian Discipleship:

Christian discipleship is a call to be with, know, and enjoy Jesus Christ

It requires self denial, sacrifice, and a servanthood attitude (Matt 16:24-26)
We are called to immitate the life of Christ (i.e. compassion, mercy, loving your
enemies)
Jesus offers to help us with this humanly impossible task. We are given the aid of the
Holy Spirit to guide us (John 15:5-8)
We are called to spread the good news of the gospel (Matthew 28:16-20) This is
called the Great Commission

Jesus had 12 disciples:

Simon (also called Peter)

Adrew
James (son of Zebedee)
John
Philip
Bartholemew
Thomas
Matthew
James (son of Alphaeus)
Thaddeus
Simon the Zealot
Judas Iscariot

Read each of the situations (we will refer to as moral dilemmas).

Explain three things:
1. What you believe a disciple in this century should do in each moral dilemma. (Remember:
being a disciple is making sure that our actions follow Jesus actions).
2. Why it may be so difficult to do the right thing.
3. What suggestions you would give to make it easier to do the right thing.
Dilemma 1
A teacher approaches you after class and asks, I know you are able to read (a particular)
language. Would you please translate what a classmate of yours has written on this book. You
first read it to yourself and realize that the graffiti is rude. Do you tell the teacher what is really
written on the book?
Dilemma 2
In the cafeteria a friend asks to borrow your homework for the next class. He has made the same
request on a few other occasions. This homework has taken you quite a while to complete. What
do you say?
Dilemma 3
You witness a co-worker who is a friend, stealing from the cash register. He offers to give you
some of the money if you dont tell. What would you do?
Dilemma 4
A bunch of friends get together and decide to play street hockey. One guy winds up and shoots
but misses the net and shatters a car window causing the alarm to sound. What would you do?
Dilemma 5
Your parents go away for the weekend. They make it clear to you that no friends are allowed
over to the house while they are gone. Some of your friends want to come over to spend the
night. Do you let them, even though you have an uncomfortable feeling about it?
Dilemma 6
You are throwing a party for you Grade 10 friends. Word gets at school and some Grade 12s
come over with alcohol and drugs. You dont want them to come in but your friends like them
and look up to them. They are standing at the door. What do you say?
Dilemma 7
A friend asks you to hold onto a small of marijuana for her because she is scared that her parents
will find it. Do you hold onto it for a few days?

Dilemma 8
You and a bunch of friends are at the mall and your friends are shoplifting. They discreetly tell
you to put something in your pocket. What do you do?

The Kingdom of Heaven

The Kingdom of Heaven is a term used by Jesus in the gospels on several occasions. It is described often
in parables, using metaphoric language (The kingdom of heaven is like...) In summary, it can be described
as wherever the reign of God is manifested. This could refer to the church (Matt 16:18-19) but Jesus also
explains that the Kingdom of Heaven is not a physical place (Jn 18:36). The parables of the Kingdom of
Heaven often describe the future (i.e. the parable of the 10 bridesmaids, the parable of the fishing net) ,
but it begins in the present. This is the new life that Jesus offers. If we take on the challenge of following
Jesus (discipleship) by living a life full of virtue, we will be close to the Kingdom of Heaven.
PRESENT

FUTURE

Whenever the sovereignty of God is accepted

by men, wherever the will of God is done
It can refer to Jesus second coming

Not necesarrily a physical place, but it can

exist in the hearts of men

Its outward manifestation is the church

It will be experienced only by those who do the

will of God

It is described as a new heaven and a new earth

Here are a list of the parables in Matthew that refer to the Kingdom of Heaven
Parable of the Weeds: Matt 13:24-30
Parable of the Mustard Seed: Matt 13:31-32
Parable of the Yeast: Matt 13:33-35
Parable of the Hidden Treasure: Matt 13:44

A parable of the sower, modernized: This is to be read to the class by the teacher as an
example for the students to do the same thing with another parable in their next
assignment: This was found on a blog by Jacob Sahms
A teacher cultivated his lessons, having adapted the information that was necessary for
knowledge, wisdom, and success. He spoke passionately and without exception to his classes,
regardless of the reception he received. Some of his lessons fell on deaf ears, where students
were allowed to sleep in the back of class, and others chose to be distracted by their cellphones
and laptops. Others appeared intent on listening, but failed to truly engage the material, as their
purpose there was driven solely by their parents wishes. When springtime came, they quickly
found other distractions, and failed to continue coming to class. Some of the students longed to
listen and to learn, but their relationships with certain other students caused them to become
distracted, to ignore their studies, and to skip class when they were encouraged to do so. But
some of the lessons were heard by the ears of receptive students, who worked hard, sought
additional help, and continued to prosper in school, and life, grasping the opportunities
presented to them.

Parables Assignment (Done in groups)
In groups of two or three you will provide a short five minute or less presentation on
one of the parables above. You may choose to do one of the following:
-A visual representation of the parable that 'sells' the idea of the parable.
-A skit that represents the idea that the parable conveys ( try to retell the parable
the way Jesus might say it if he came to earth today)
-A talk show that discusses the meaning of the parable
You will be expected to address the following questions during your presentation:
-How does this parable represent the Kingdom of Heaven?
-How can the message of this parable help us grow toward a greater understanding
of what it means to be a disciple of Christ?
-How could this parable be retold in today's world?
You will have Fridays class to work on this. You will present on the class next
Monday
Parable Reflection (Done indivdually)
Following the presentations, you will complete for homework a one paragraph
reflection on one of the parables (it does not have to be the parable you presented
on). You should talk about the parable that resonated with you the most. Why did
this parable resonate with you the most? What did you learn from this parable?
What steps will you take to apply the message of this parable to your life?
This paragraph will be due on Tuesday

STUDENT HANDOUT: Morality Part I

Some key terms on morality:
morality - principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good
and bad behavior
moral dilemma - to be faced with a situation in which there is a conflict between
two moral responsibilities
integrity - the quality of being an honest and sincere person, having strong moral
principles
natural law - the law that is written on our hearts. It is what people followed before
God revealed the 10 commandments. For example, it is known by reason that you
should not murder, even without the ten commandments. A person that knows it is
wrong to murder without being taught the ten commandments is following natural
law Romans 2:14-15 does a good job explaining this further.
EXAMPLE OF A MORAL DILEMMA

You are living with your family in a scarce, poverty-stricken country. Where you live,
there is no food bank, and you and your family are starving to death. One day, you are
out trying to find some sort of food to nourish your family, when something miraculous
(or problematic) occurs. You find a huge sack full of money that has fallen off the back
of a truck. You realize this would be a fortune to your family, but there is one obvious
catch. This money has to belong to someone else, and to take it and use it for your
family would be stealing. You could explain your situation to the rightful owner of the
money, but how can you know hell be a generous person? Would you:
a. Return the money to its rightful owner or
b. Take the money and use it to help your family.

Under the canopy at the T.J. Maxx store, Glen James sat among the shopping carts, shaded from the late-summer
sun. As shoppers bustled through the South Bay plaza Saturday, James proofread a letter, resting on the bag he brings
with him when he panhandles.
As he read, James noticed a young man nearby, sitting on an overturned carriage. He had a bag, too, a black backpack
at his feet. James went back to his letter.

M ATT HE W J. LE E / G LO BE STAFF

Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis gave a citation honoring Glen James in Boston.

When James looked up again, the man was gone. But his bag was still there.
After a time, James went over to see what had been left behind. Inside, he found $2,400 in cash and nearly $40,000
in travelers checks, along with a passport and personal papers. For a homeless man who subsists on food stamps and
spare change, it was a staggering sum, maybe even a chance at a new life.
But James, a slight, bespectacled man in his mid-50s who says he has been homeless for five years, said the thought
of keeping the money never crossed his mind.

11

Even if I were desperate for money, I would not have kept even a penny of the money found, he said Monday in a
handwritten statement. God has always very well looked after me.
James immediately flagged down police, who in short order returned the bag to its owner, a student visiting Boston
from China. James, a man who lives in a homeless shelter and relies on charity for change to wash his clothes, had
returned a small fortune without a second thought.
For his actions, James received a citation Monday at Boston police headquarters, where Police Commissioner Edward
F. Davis praised his extraordinary show of character and honesty.
It really is a remarkable tribute to him, Davis said.
James, who has a speech impediment, said little at the ceremony, saying he was self-conscious about his stutter. As
cameras flashed, he smiled nervously and appeared somewhat overwhelmed. But when asked how he felt about
returning so much money, he did not pause.
Very, very good, he said, letting loose a hearty laugh.
In his statement, James wrote about how he found the money and a bit about himself. He had worked at a courthouse
for 13 years as a file clerk, he said, before being fired. On Monday, the courts could not immediately confirm his
employment. James could have gotten another job, he said, but he suffers from an inner-ear disorder that causes
prolonged vertigo spells.
The shelter is the perfect living situation with someone who has Menieres disease, he wrote. There are many
people in the shelter to attend to me.
James said he has siblings and other relatives he could live with, but does not want to burden them.
He said he had not met the man whose bag he found, but said he was very glad to make sure it was returned to him
safely.
James said he receives the blessing of food stamps and panhandles for money for laundry, transportation, and
odds and ends. Just having a little money, he said, can make all the difference.
Its just nice to have some money in ones pockets so that as a homeless man I dont feel absolutely broke all the
time.
James thanked all the people who have given him spare change, including mayoral candidate Charles Yancey, who
had dropped a total of $7 into his cup.
Jamess story compelled Ethan Whittington, a 27-year-old from Midlothian, Va., who has never been to Boston, to
launch a fund for James at www.gofundme.com/4by2as . Within the first four hours, Whittingtons campaign raised
$3,152, which he plans to deliver to James.

12

After receiving the backpack from James, police notified mall security. They were later contacted by an employee at
Best Buy, who said a customer had told them he had lost his backpack containing a large sum of money.
The owner was positively identified by his passport, police said.
As he left the ceremony at police headquarters, James took deliberate steps, his eyes fixed on the floor. Then
employees watching from behind their desks stood and applauded. His eyes widened, and he nodded his thanks.
Outside the station, James was asked if there was anything he would like, anything at all.
As he got into a police cruiser that would take him back to the shelter, he said, No war.

Moral Dilemma Assignment:

1. Read the following paragraph and think about what you might do if you were
Heinz
A woman was near death from a special kind of cancer. There was one drug that the doctors thought
might save her. It was a form of radium that a druggist in the same town had recently discovered.
The drug was expensive to make, but the druggist was charging ten times what the drug cost him to
produce. He paid $200 for the radium and charged $2,000 for a small dose of the drug. The sick
woman's husband, Heinz, went to everyone he knew to borrow the money, but he could only get
together about $1,000 which is half of what it cost. He told the druggist that his wife was dying and
asked him to sell it cheaper or let him pay later. But the druggist said: No, I discovered the drug and
I'm going to make money from it. So Heinz got desperate and broke into the man's laboratory to
steal the drug for his wife. Should Heinz have broken into the laboratory to steal the drug for his
wife? Why or why not?
Homework: Write a short one page (1-2 paragraphs) response on what you would do if you were in
Heinzs situation. Be honest, tell me what you would really do! Not what you want me to hear.
Explain clearly the reasoning behind your choice.
Here are some guiding questions to consider:
-What would you do if you where Heinz? Why?
-Is this the fair thing to do?
-Who will this decision effect?
-Would you say that your action is acting in integrity?
- What do you think your friend would do?
-What do you think your parent would do? (You can even ask them if you want!)
- What would Jesus do?

13

STUDENT HANDOUT: Morality Part II

3 Determinants of the Goodness or Evil of a Moral Action:
Moral object - thing with which the action is essentially concerned, for example,
lying, praying, stealing, helping a blind person cross the street.
Intention - Every human act, no matter how trivial, is done for some
purpose. Some actions, like blasphemy and stealing, are always wrong and no
purpose, no matter how noble, can make them good. Other actions may be either
good or bad, depending on why we do them. Taking a drink is not sinful; drinking in
order to get drunk is.
Circumstances - Only the act and the intention make an act good or bad. The
circumstances can increase or diminish the goodness or evil. The circumstances are
such things as the person involved, the time, the place, the occasion. For example,
if somebody steals food because they need to survive, the act is still evil, but the
evilness is diminished because of the circumstance.

Christian morality:
The basics of Christian morality are as follows:
1. God created all humans in his image, and should be treated with love and justice
2. We believe in Jesus, our Saviour, who taught us how to live.
On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets Matt 22:40
Our moral life should be based on trying to follow the example that Jesus set Love
God, Love others
Love God:

14
This means to make God the center of our being. This means studying the gospel
message and praying to God that he will transform your heart to be more like his.
This is known as our faith journey, something that is not easy, it takes time. In
fact, it is a life long process, and something that we are all called to do as
Chrsitians.
Love Others:
If we truly love God, a love of others will naturally flow out of us. We will want to
love our enemies, pray for those that persecute us, and look after those less
fortunate than us. In Matthew 19: 20-22, Jesus commands a man to sell all his
possessions to the poor if he wants to be perfect. Do we have to do this?
Probably not, but at the very least, we should not let material posessions be the
most important thing in life that we strive for.
Common Good:

The sum total of social conditions which allow people, either as groups or as
individuals, to reach their fulfillment more fully and more easily
- defending the sanctity of human life (i.e. fight against abortion, euthenasia, war,
genocide, racism)
-providing for the disadvantaged (increase minimum wage, ensuring quality
education, addressing hunger)
-protecting the environment (i.e. carpooling, conserving energy, recycle)

question 7.

9. What do you believe is the human thing to do in this situation?

Why?

Your best friend is about to get married. The ceremony will be performed in
one hour, but you have seen, just before coming to the wedding, that your
friends fiancee has been having an affair. If your friend marries this woman,
she is unlikely to be faithful, but on the other hand, if you tell your friend about
the affair, you will ruin his wedding. Would you, or would you not, tell your
friend of the affair?

Jim has the responsibility of filling a position in his firm. His friend Paul has
applied and is qualified, but someone else seems even more qualified. Jim
wants to give the job to Paul, but he feels guilty, believing that he ought to be
impartial. Thats the essence of morality, he initially tells himself. This belief is,
however, rejected, as Jim resolves that friendship has a moral importance that
permits, and perhaps even requires, partiality in some circumstances. So he
gives the job to Paul.

STUDENT HANDOUT: Freedom, Responsibility, and Conscience

Freedom /Free Will- God did not create us to be robots, but to have the dignity of freedom, even
recognizing that with that freedom we will inevitably make bad choices. Christian belief in human freedom
recognizes that we are called but not forced by God to choose the values of the Gospel, such as faith,
hope, love, mercy, justice, forgiveness, integrity and compassion.

23
Responsibility - With this freedom comes great responsibility! We are responsible to give an answer for
our actions, and we will be held accountable to God (Romans 14:12) If we did not have free will, we
would not have responsibility.
Conscience - Conscience it the ability to recognize the morality of a given act. God gave us a conscience
as a guide. Romans (2:14-16) explains that even without the ten commandments, we have the
conscience to help guide us, and make us feel such feeling as guilt. Study of Gods word and prayer will
help form our conscience. In fact, the formation of our conscience should never stop growing. We have
also been given the gift of the Holy Spirit to help guide us
Holy Spirit - Related to our conscience, the Holy Spirit has a few specific roles:
- To convict us of our sin. Everyone has a God conscience whether they admit it or not
- To take permenant residence in the hearts of believers. Jesus described this as componsation for his
absence.
- Helps us to understand and interpret Gods word
- Gift Giver (Read 1 Corinthians 12 for a list of some of these gifts)
- Produces the fruit of the spirit in our lives (Galatians 5:23)
Here are some verses that describe the Holy Spirit: Mt. 3:11, Lk 3:22, Mk 1:12, Jn 1:32-33
Prophets - One specific gift of the Holy spirit is prophecy. A prophet is a person given divine intepretation,
and called to be Gods mouthpiece. Often times, this involves predicting the future, but not necessarily.
Biblical Examples: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Amos, Simeon, Anna.
How can you tell a false prophet from a true prophet?
A true prophet will have 100% accuracy if he predicts the future (Deut 18:21-22)
A true prophet seeks the Glory of the Lord only, he is not seeking to glorify himself
A true prophet will have identifiable fruits of a Christian
A true prophet abides by Gods law
A true prophet seeks to edify, comfort and uplift the church
Journal article:
Using information from todays lesson, and reading the scripture verses above, write down in your own
words what the Holy Spirit is like. Can you think of a time that you felt the effects of the Holy Spirit in your
life? If you cannot think of anything, write a prayer of petition asking for you to recieve the Holy Spirit. If
you can think of something, describe the event, and pray a prayer of thanksgiving that the Holy Spirit is
evident in your life, and pray that the Holy Spirit continues to work in your life

STUDENT HANDOUT: Sin and Reconciliation

Sin - sin is considered to be any thought, word, or deed, that is against the law of
God, sin can also be explained as missing the mark . Sins can also be sins of
omission, such as lack of compassion and justice

26
Mortal sin - results in separation from God. It is the knowing and willful violation of
God's law. A mortal sin fulfills these requirements: It is serious (i.e. idolatry,
adultery, premeditated murder), and the person must know how serious it is.
Venial sin - These sins are less serious and do not break our relationship from God,
but they injure it. For example, gossip, or second degree murder
Forgiveness - Christians believe that forgiveness of our sins is possible because of
the death of Jesus on the cross. A knowledge of this great truth should allow us to
forgive our neighbor. Not seven times, but seventy times seven (Matt 22:18)
Should you continue sinning because God will forgive you? No! (Romans 6:1-2)
Reconciliation - This is a term that means confession of our sins. All have sinned
and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) , therefore confession/reconciliation
is an important part of the Christian faith. Catholics believe that it is important to
confess your sins to a priest. Most other Christian denominations believe that it is
sufficient to confess your sins directly to God in prayer. In either case, it is the virtue
of recognizing your sins, and sincerely wishing to avoid those sins in the future.
Here is a list of quotes from Pope Francis regarding the purpose of confession:
1. Confession helps people feel shame for the wrong they have done and embraces them with God's
love so that they know they are forgiven and can go out strengthened in the battle to avoid sin in the
future.
2. "But if a person, whether a layperson, priest or sister, goes to confession and converts, the Lord
forgives. And when the Lord forgives, he forgets.
3. The confessional is not a dry cleaners, a business of sorts that's just washes out the stain of sin
4. when the door starts closing a bit because of our weakness and sins, confession reopens it.
5. I cant be baptized two or three or four times, but I can go to confession, and when I go to
confession, I renew that grace of baptism,
6. It's not a torture chamber where you'll be raked over the coals.
7. Confession is an encounter with Jesus whose "mercy motivates us to do better."
8. It's not a psychiatric session that neglects the question of sin or a mental email to God that avoids
the face-to-face encounter with the Lord through the priest.
9. The sincere and humble admission of one's weaknesses, of having "a sliver of Satan in my flesh,"
shows that the power of salvation comes from God, not oneself,
10. Confession "is going to praise God, because I -- the sinner -- have been saved by him," who
always waits and always forgives "with tenderness."

In the parable of the unforgiving debtor, a man owes a king millions of

dollars. He begged the king to forgive his debt, and the king had pity on him,
an forgave his debt. Later on, that same man approached a fellow servant
who owed him a few thousand dollars. He demanded the payment instantly,
and threw the man in jail when he could not pay. When the king found out
how this man treated his servant, he was angry, and decided to throw the
man in prison, until he could repay his millions of dollars in debt. How come
you could not forgive a small debt of your fellow servant, considering the
huge debt I forgave you for? Shouldnt you have had mercy on your servant,
