Volume 1, Issue 1

Welcome to 5th grade with Mrs. Brown. I am delighted to be your childs teacher
this year. 5th grade is an important time for students to cement the skills they have
gained and develop them further in preparation for middle school. They are encouraged and expected to be more independent in their learning, requiring less guidance
and support from adults and teachers. We will have a great time growing over the
year and building a fun, safe classroom community. If you have any questions,
please contact me. I am always here to help! -Fredricka Brown

This year each student will be required to present a power point on their Science
Fair project. This will help their peers learn new Science material along with utilizing unfamiliar technology programs. Parents are expected to assist but should not
complete the power point for the student. Here is a KWICK method to help guide
your child while he/she is completing this assignment. A rubric will also be sent

KWICK Method
K-Key point-Choose only one key point per slide. Focusing on too many
things at once is confusing.
W-Words that suggest the visual -Identify words from your key points to
best help you create visuals
I-In context-Engage the audience by making your visual relate to your key
point,
C- Crystal clear-Just like a glass window, the message and visual must be
clear.
K- Keep focus- Focus on the way you will present your slide.

Is it possible to flip my class upside down?

The academic concept of a
flipped classroom is to use
the traditional homework
time to introduce new material to students. The
teacher will teach the new
material using a recorded
video or presentation.
When students return the
following day, the teacher
can interact with the students and review any misunderstood information
with extra one on one time.

Benefits:
Students can learn at their own pace.
Allows students to have more time for collaborating with other
students promoting teamwork.
When a student is watching a video lecture, the lecture is free
of interruptions to distract the students and can be replayed as
often as the student would like.
Sick days will no longer interrupt a students ability to learn.
Teacher can spend more time providing one on one instruction.
