Journal week#1
The internship that I have secure is working with The LaRed Health Center Project
based out of Sussex Tech High School. This is under the Program Director, Purcell Dye
MA. The objection of the program is to use evident based information on drugs and
alcohol addiction and prevention, which we will present to the community, administrator
and students of Sussex Tech High School. This community based program gets its follow
the criteria established by the Community Anti-Drugs Coalition of America. The vision of
the CDAC is A world of safe, healthy and drug free communities (CDACA, 2009). The
teams presentation will be using the approach from the Strategic Prevention Framework to
promote, reduce and educate students on drugs and substance.
I was extremely nervous about the position. I have confidence in my ability but
tackling on a responsibility that I had no prior knowledge about was intimidating. I took
time out to study the mission and expectations of the program. I had to research and make
myself aware of the goals of the CDAC and how I will play a role in educating our target
population.
I plan to know how to network with community leaders, volunteer and continue to
learn about the community and how I can improve the wellbeing of residents. Being able
to learn, give back or create community outreach programs would be great for Delaware.
This is a small community with urban issue that need to be addressed.
Being a part of the team where my input is valued and suggested is complementing. I
believe that I have much to offer to help fulfill the mission of the program.
Being a Parent Education I am able to identify some areas that other team members may
have missed.

My Plan is to be read, prepared, be on time and open to learn new ideals,

techniques and evidence base data. I do remember that I dont have to know it all and have
confidents thats alright to ask questions. I informed my Director that he is my teacher out
of the classroom and I will need to receive guidance and information from him going
forth.
We have our first presentation to the Sussex High School athletic team on
1/28/2015 in which I have two meetings prior, with the presenters to go over any last
minute details and confirm which educational materials will be distributed out. The
project team is scheduled throughout the school year to provided education, prevention,
and effects of substance abuse presentations.
In order for the granted be utilized they had to have fulfilled the requirements of
appointing an intern. I was very fortunate that this opportunity became available to me.
This chance will allow me to put my knowledge and experience to use.

Journal Week of 1/25/15
This week at my internship as a program assistant I was asked to do a power point
outlining the Ravens Fly above Drugs Initiative to present to the principal of the school
by the Director. I was extremely nervous. I just had to stay calm and to focus on what it
should have explain. I Power Point had to include statistics on drug use for students. It
had to include information of underage drinking. It Included pictures of drugs, street
names and effects. I also provided information how parents/caretaker could become
involved with the discussion of drugs and intervention techniques for them to utilize when
speaking with their children. I provided hotline information that would address suicide
crisis, LBGT hotline, domestic violence, drug treatment programs and any other
information that would be prevalent to a student who was in need of support. Finally I had
to include an outline of what subjects will be presented, the list of presenters that will be
presenting this information over the course of the school year to the students.
This project was challenging for me because I have never provided a power point
that other people outside of the classroom would see. I had to muster courage in my ability
and be decisive on what I preferred to be a good PowerPoint. I also had to use positive
talk that my director assured me that it was my project so my vision would be
acceptable. To find out he was very happy with the final project, I was extremely relived
and overcome with emotions. This internship is taking me on somewhat of an emotional
journey. This is because I have feel like I have to learn a lot in such little time I just want
to get it right. I realize that I am putting additional pressure on me that no one else is

doing. My Director is all so confident and reassuring in my abilities I just need to have
that same ideology.

Journal Week 3
This week for the Ravens Fly Above Drugs wellness campaign it was our first
time presenting substance and prevention to the students. We begin in the Auto department
at Sussex Technical High School. This was a mainly 9 t h graders. The presenter was Purcell
Dye, Project Director. Mr. Dye was articulate and spoke clearly by using descriptive words
to draw a picture that the student could visualize. He started off by explain how the brain
works. The basis of his presentation is that one has control over their behaviors but not
over consequences. Consequence are naturally a part of life. But one can control their
behaviors. With knowing this then he proceeded to explain how the brain has neurons and
once they have been damaged they could never be replaced unlike a broken bone or a
scratch which can repair itself. Once the brain had been introduced to a chemical, it will
always change the body DNA and will eventually want that chemical again. The dopamine
which is the natural chemical in the body thats job is to allow basic bodily functions to be
pleasurable such as breathing or going to the bathroom had been altered. Once this a
substance/chemical has infuriated the body it will continue to crave that chemical. That is
why alcoholics will always be an alcoholic because the body is still craving the chemical/
substance. With the information that was the presented the children did ask question
because they really could not believe that using a drug one time could really change the
makeup of the body forever. Mr. Dye had the children remember one of the best dinners
that they ever had. Many of the children named steak, shrimp or lobster. The purpose of
the illustrations was when they think about that dinner made their mouths water and made
them hungry. This proved to them that when they ingested the food it changed the

chemical makeup in their body which they can never forget and invokes change in the
body when thinking about the food i.e. (drug, alcohol). The illustration did hit home to
them from that.
I truly think that the statement

Mr. Dye said that you can never replace or

replenish any cells that have been destroyed or damaged you can only relearn a task at
that cognitive capacity but will never regain full use of those neurons. He provided the
illustration of seeing a person that was alcoholics or drugs addicts. How their behaviors,
mannerism still mimic an addict or alcoholic although they are in recovery.

Mr. Dye

reiterated that nothing positive comes from using drugs such as wealth, knowledge or good
grades. The presentation objective was

to get students to think about their behavior if

approached or considering using drugs, which they can control and not fully aware of the
consequences which are evitable. Also Mr. Dye encouraged students especially those who
were passive to never give another person power to make any decision for them.
Finally, at the end of the day we were able to provide the presentation to 159
students. I handed out an anonymous survey that Mr. Dye generated which asked grade,
age, ethnicity, if students used the drug THC (Marijuana), was the presentation helpful,
and any recommendation that would be useful for other peers and the community regarding
the current drug epidemic. I collected all the information and compiled the quantitative
data and it will be provided to the Division of Public Health and The Division of
Substance Abuse and Mental Health, Delaware Department of Health and Social Services
and La Red Health Center.
In this role I feel confident in providing feedback and suggestions to my supervisor
which he is appreciative of. The team that is working on this project are friendly, positive
and accessible for any questions that I may have. The team also has great suggestions on
future endeavors in the Human Service Field. So far in this role the task that Mr. Dye has

assigned me to do I have been able to complete them. The way that I can improve my
weakness is to continue to educate myself on what I lack knowledge in.

Journal Week 4

This week for my task for the Raven Fly Above Drugs Wellness Campaign, was to assist with
another presentation with the Presenter Doug Spruill, a Certified Drug Addiction Counselor (CDAC).
Dougs presentation topic was why people use drugs. Doug begin by asking the students why a person
or student would use drugs. The students did provide answers such as anxiety, parents stressor and peer
pressure. Dougs then showed a YouTube video titled wreckEd. The video was about teens who started
taking drug and alcohol and the ramifications of their use. It showed teens who are addicted to Heroin and
their explanation of how they begin their journey on that descend. One of the students said If he had all
the drugs in the world it still would never be enough. This film also looked at the families dynamics in
which their drug use has affect them. Family members spoke of how they could not identify whom this
addict was because it wasnt the child/grandchild theyve known. The video depicted real life footage of
how the students were active, engaging before addiction. Then, Dougs spoke and explained by
illustrations on the board that when using drugs at a young age that the brain is not fully developed. He
drew a picture of coils loosely spun which represented the brain not being fully developed. This means
that it has non maturating gaps within the brain that can either be embedded with positive information or
negative behaviors.
Doug informed the student that since their brain isnt fully developed if they decide to use drugs,
the brain will eventually mature and the coils will get tighter and come together. This result of is that a
person will use drugs regularly as a coping mechanism. Eventually use drug use that started off to help
deal with stressor will become necessary to live life. The presentation was informative. It provided
another view how drugs use can turn in to addictions and why. Doug provided a personal testimony about
how drugs had affected him and his family. He shared with the group how drugs use in his home was a

normal, as well as seeing it used in the community in which he was raised in. He never was told that drug
were bad in school he stated that he remembered the only drug campaign was Nancy Regan on the
news when she said say no to drugs. He shared that his father overdosed on heroin. But he did inform
the students that when people start off using drugs its never with the intent on becoming an addict.
Therefore with his understanding of the disease he knew that his father loved him but he was very sick.
Also, he shared that his mother died from addictions to opiates. She had a back injury and eventually it
lead to addiction. She was went to rehab but with life stressors she started back using until her untimely
death.
Dougs personal experience with drugs effected the students. Doug went on to explain that the
opportunities and information that the students are given are to are to help them succeed in life and to
make the right decisions for their future. Finally at the end of each presentation that we did, I provided the
students with the surveys and collected them. I will then tally them up and provide the qualitative data.
On this day we had 4 different presentation with at least 35 or more students participating.
I am become more confident in my role as a program assistant. The school staff is kind and
helpful when we are presenting. The staff goes over and beyond to help the team with our presentation
preparing such as providing us with dry eraser board, markers, access to computers and copies of the
surveys we use to name a few. My interaction is with the students is pleasant. My interaction with the
team of presenters is enjoyable. As the students learn I am learning. I will continue to research more about
the dangers of drugs. I will also continue to perform at a professional level and be accessible to the team
as needed.

Journal Week 5
This week my task was to assist with another Presenter for the Ravens Fly above Drug Wellness
Campaign 2015 at Sussex tech High School. The Presenter name was William Singleton a CDAC, whom
has his own practice in Millsboro that assist people with recovery. During these presentations we will
present to different ages and grades. We will cover 4 session with anywhere from 5 to 40 kids theyre
engaging. Williamss presentation began with statics of drug arrest in the Sussex County. He stated that on

1/14/2015 8 people was arrested , 3500 bags of Heroin was found in Millsboro
1/16/2015 2 people was arrested, 253 bags of Heroin was found in Lewes
1/26/2015 4 people was arrested, 8000 bags of Heroin was found in Sussex Community
2/10/2014 1 person was arrested and 2300 bags of Heroin was found in Georgetown.
This is an epidemic in this community and he asked the students why this drug is being widely used.
Students responded that using was because of peer pressure, curiosity. The Presentation stated that is drug
is being used by those who dont know how to cope with stress, parents issues, boredom, rebellion and
easily accessible.
Some of the students was able to provide personal testimony regarding a family member being addicted
to Heroin. One student stated that his aunt died from complication of addiction where she began using
when she met her husband. Another student stated that her cousin is currently a Heroin addict.
Will, asked if the students knew the long-term use of Heroin, some examples are:

Bad teeth
Inflammation of Gums
Cold sweats
Menstrual irregulars
Puts sores
Reduce memory
Depression

Will provided Heroin Paraphernalia which Heroin used. Some students didnt know what it looked like.
He provided a spoon with flour on it depicting heroin, tea light candles, and syringes. This is what Heroin
user use. They have to cook the heroin to liquefy it to put in a syringe to shoot it in the veins. The high
only last about 30 minutes. The reason for addiction is because without using Heroin the body goes in to
withdrawal which the symptoms are like having the flu and food poising at the same time. The user is
afraid to experience those symptoms therefore there is continued uses. A person cannot die from the
withdrawal but if they are in declining health withdrawal can be fatal.
I am constantly learning new things about the drug. The students provide an environment of
engaging discussion and seems very interested in learning about prevention as well as the side effects.
With this presentation they will be well equip to deal with making a decision on using vs not using.

Journal Week #6
My experience this week in my internship was being in attendance of the Delaware Prevention
Summit, sponsor by Community of Anti-Drug Coalition of America (CADCA). This was held on

Saturday February 21, 2015 at the Army conference Hall in Smyrna Delaware. The focus of the summit
had 3 different forums which were Coalition Development, Military Service Members and families and
the Youth Leadership Development workshop. I participated with the Youth Lairdship Development
workshop.
The trainers for the Youth Leadership Development also know at the National Youth Leadership
Initiative (NYLI) was outlining how the youth in attendance could become leaders in their own
communities to promote awareness and education for substance abuse. The trainers that opened the forum
stated that when they became involved in the CADCA they were in middle school. They both was
interested in making a change in their community. Since their role in CADCA it has taken them
throughout the county and abroad teaching your people how to become a leaders for a social issue that is
important to them.
The trainers did an excellent job on ice breaking techniques to make the children feel comfortable
to share, views, opinions and answers. They provided music that the children could identify during break
time and also was very interactive with the students. They also used icebreaking techniques for each
person participating will introduce themselves to others. No answer was no incorrect when providing
feedback. The lead trainer informed the children that they do have many of the answered to solve some of
the social issues that the youth are plagued with because they are around peers constantly. She informed
the youth that their input is needed when congress is making laws that can affect their generations
Youths input are welcoming with the CADCA.
I really enjoyed this summit. I reflect on how I want to really get involved in my community to
understand what is going on. I felt very discourage because during one of the exercise they asked us to
draw my community include, the demographics which include, stores, lakes, schools, parks, ethnicity and
problem areas. I could not actually complete the task because I couldnt identify any negative behaviors. I
know that Smyrna has its issues because I hear it on the news and receive alerts from the town of Smyrna
Police Facebook page. The others were able to complete their task and provide some valuable information

regarding the positive and negative behaviors in their community. I really have to get involved in Smyrna.
I am not sure if its because my children are younger and they arent really hanging outside of the home?
Going forth I will get more involve with in my community. I will partner up with a local coalition to
provide my services to promote, empowered and educate those who I can help in my community.
I will continue to learning by attending more trainings being offered. I will continue to provide
professional attitude when collaborating with other agency. I will take a leap of faith and introduce myself
to others instead of being shy. Im really enjoying my internship. I been provided another opportunity to
grow and give back.

Week Journal 7
This week my experience with my internship was disappointing. The program director and I was
scheduled to attend a presentation sponsored by the office of Division of Substance Abuse and Mental
Health on February 25th at the Dover Library. The topic of the presentation was Certified Prevention
Specialist information about becoming a CPS. A Certified Prevention Specialists is a person who seeks to

provide service to a vulnerable population such as addiction, teen pregnancy, delinquency etc.
Unfortunately the meeting was cancel at the last minute. The presentation has been rescheduled for
3/30/2015 at 10 am at the Dover Library and I will be attending. Next, The Ravens Fly Above Drugs
wellness team was schedule to do the Substance Prevention Presentation at Sussex Tech high School but
because the snow storm on Thursday 2/26/2015 school was cancelled. We are awaiting the new schedule
from Stacey Kemp, the school nurse that schedules the time slots for the. My Program Director Purcell
Dye was scheduled to be the guest presenter. Mr. Dye presentations are informative, thought provoking
and encouraging.
My reflection on this week is that some weeks may be disappointing because I may not meet the
hours that I am required to do satisfy my practicum obligations. I will continue to be ready and
professional when assisting my colleagues with presentations. On a happier note I was happy to receive
my stipend for my role in the Ravens Fly Above Drug Campaign. It is nice to be rewarded for you
dedication and work performance. I look forward to our upcoming trainings and presentations for the
month of March.

Journal Week 8
This weeks internship experience was again disappointing. We were schedule to do a
presentation to the students as Sussex Tech Highs School but because the winter snow storm on Thursday
it was canceled.

Despite the presentation being cancelled my program director had asked me to create a banner
that would be displayed during wellness week at Sussex Tech. This task for was challenging for me
because a couple of reasons. The color of the school was black and white, which I found very difficult to
create a banner to that would distinguishes The Ravens Fly Above Drugs banner opposed to the other
Ravens/Sussex Tech banners that currently hang throughout the school. Next, when I was trying to do the
banner, I found that it is so many different fonts, boldnesss and designs to choose from. Since I have no
prior experience with creating on a large scale. I submitted a banner that didnt meet the approval of my
director. The advice that he gave me is that he would like me to work with a company that creates
banners. The company that I will work with is called Windswept in Dover, De. I will collaborate with
them this week to produce an unforgettable banner.
My reflection of this week is that it is alright if I miss the mark, but I have to make an attempt to
throw. I worked at creating this banner at the best of my ability but soliciting professional support could
be needed to help create and fulfill a vision. As always I will continue to be professional and ready to
assist the team in completing the task at hand. I will provide feedback and suggestion going forth during
my internship.

Journal week 9

My experience this week for my internship is that I was able to attend the Delaware Prevention
Advisory Committee (DPAC) meeting. This meeting was sponsored by the Delaware Substance Abuse

and Mental Health Division which was discussing the State Prevention Framework and State Incentive
Grant (SPF-SIG). This meeting began with opening remarks from Dr. Cecilia Douthy Willis, Ph., and
DSPF SIG Project Director. She opened with, elaborating on what phase this (SPF-SIF) was in. She
stated that the program would be ending in April, therefore all invoices must be submitted for payment.
This SPF-SIG was a 5yr program that was implemented to provide prevention of substance in the
communities throughout the country that was federally funded. She mention that all moneys would need
to be spent and if agencies and programs have a problem spending the money that they could help spend
it, connect them with other agencies to use the money or take it back. She emphasized that she didnt
want to take it back but she would. Also, she informed the agencies that all documentation must be in
order because due to having the Secretary of Human Services observing the program closely she would
like to have an account of specific transitions and the state auditor could come to audit the documents at
any time.
The school based program that I am doing my internship through, Dr. Willis, stated that our end
date was not the same as the other coalitions due to our program being involvement with the school
district and because we got a late start. She did emphasis that we should be submitting monthly narratives
and calendar of plan activities of prevention. My program director stated that we were in our time frame
for spending and would be all spent out by the end of the program. Also, he stated that all the necessary
documentation was sent earlier today.
This meeting was very interesting. I was privilege to see how coalitions and state collaborate to
provide services. Also, it was noted that there is another program that is being offer through the state that
will continue the prevention initiative but she didnt go into details however she did suggest that anyone
interested in submitting a proposal to go to the Delaware website and click on the bids link.
As I reflect on my experience I was prepared to attend this meeting and felt comfortable with
asking questions to our representative at DSAMH. I will continue to be open to learning new ideals and
understanding how the state of Delaware Substance Abuse and Mental Health division operates. As

always I will be ready to provide my assistance and support for the team during presentations. I will also
be available to attend informative sessions. Finally, my program director stated that he may apply for
another grant, under the new program and asked me if I would be will to be on his team, and I said yes.

Journal #10
This week my experience for my internship was that I could not attend the scheduled presentation
due to prior commitments. I did however keep in contact with the Program director who stated that all
went well with the presentation on March 17, 2015. The students was receptive and I will need to
complete the measureable data so that we could submit them to our SPF-SIG representative.

Going forth I will make sure that my schedule is open for all other presentations. The next
presentation at Sussex Tech High School is scheduled for March 26, 2015. Finally, we are in preparation
of wellness week. I am looking forward to doing an alternative to reduce stress presentation and
facilitating fun activities on the topic of awareness during wellness week.
As I reflect on my internship I will continue to be professional and to assist the team by providing
feedback. I will also, make sure that there is no conflict with my schedule. Finally, the Certified
Prevention Specialist (CPS) information session on March 30 th 2015 at the Dover Library is near. It is
required that a team member attends the class and the state will pay for the testing. The Nurse Practitioner
Stacy Kemp will attend and take the test. This CPS requirements will use your Masters degree and any
other CEUs will be added to help achieve the required 120 hours that is needed to obtain this
certification. Since I havent obtained my Masters degree I would not be qualified for the testing but I
can still attend the information session.

This week my experience for my internship consist of doing a presentation a Sussex Technical
High School. The presentation that I assisted was the Program Director Purcell Dye along with Stacey
Kemp the Nurse practitioner. We only was allow to do only one presentation because the teachers are
trying to make up instructional time since missing so many snow days and coming up on spring break.

After todays presentation we had our team supervisor meeting to discuss our planned activities
for wellness week. Wellness week is April 27- May 1 during the lunch period. The activities will consist
of The Raven Fly Above Drugs table, the technical areas of cosmetology that will provide make- up tips
since prom is that on May 2, 2015. Also, there will be Senior who will have tables, promoting art therapy,
instructional dance lessons and the social worker who will also provide information.
Our table will consist of games, give away and preventative information on substance abuse. Our
meeting outline the next scheduled presentation for April, May and June that we will need to provide to
our SPF-SIG representative. Also, invoices was submitted for our banner, water bottles that I will provide
as give away. My responsibility is to create questions related to our presentations, substance awareness
and school knowledge that the students can win prizes as they play Plinko. Also we will do a main daily
drawing for the students who visits each table they will be given raffle tickets to enter a chance to win a
$20.00 ITunes card.
This meeting provided us with a chance to voice our input on what would be appropriate games
and to focus on our main goal which is to do the activities, spend the money and leave and impact in the
students at Sussex Tech. As I reflect on this week it was a great week, I was happy to be able to provide
my feedback and having the team utilize my ideals such as the Plinko game for this event. I will continue
to be prepared and accessible to the team as needed. My program director was at the company to pick up
the banner on Saturday and he did have the information with him, he was able to email me that he needed
a copy of the invoice and I was able to provide that for him. This internship has put emphasis
organization and being accessible.

Journal week 13
This week for my internship experience for with the Ravens Fly Above Drugs wellness
Campaign is preparing for wellness week April 27 thru May 1, 2015. This week I met with my Leadership
instructor on 4/15/2015 to discuss our planned activities for that week. At the meeting it was discussed
that he will present for two days and the Certified Drug Alcohol Counselors (CDAC), Will and Donna
will attend the other days. It was discuses that I will provided literature and be in charge of the Plinko
game. This game will be designed that wherever the game pieces drops that will be the category of
questions. There will be categories such as, Alcohol, marijuana, e-cigarettes, heroin, consequences,
tobacco, random and prevention questions that the students can answered to win a prize. During the
meeting it was discussed that the CDCAs will handle the obstacle course, which students will take turns
navigating a small course with drunken beer goggles on that will simulate intoxications. Next we disused
that the t-shirts are completed and will be ready for distribution during wellness week for all students.
Discussed it that he submitted for payment additional items that we requested to order for wellness weeks
such as the bracelets with logo and additional water bottles. Our Ravens Fly Above Banner came in and
looks amazing and I have possession of which I will set up daily at the school.
This weeks has mainly been about preparations for wellness week. Here we will be able to speak
with students individually and provide students with literature that they themselves can read or provides
members in their family to educate them also.

I will continue to be accessible for the team. I will be prompt and on time to make sure that all the
information is set up whereas the students can feel comfortable with coming to our table. We cannot buy
food with funds from the grant so some Easter candy could be another way to grab their attention. I
learning that preparation is the key to success especially if you want something to execute the way that
you desire.

My internship experience this week was focused on preparing for wellness week starting
on Monday April 27-May 1, 2015. The Ravens Fly Above Drugs wellness campaign have a table
set up that will provide the students with preventative substance abuse information to the
students. I have put together the Plinko game where I have gather questions that the students
must answer correctly to get a prize and decorated the Plinko game with anti-drug and alcohol
pictures. Hopefully this will grab the students attention resulting them coming to our table and
inquire about our information.
We just got approval for the Plinko game from our SIG representative. Thank goodness
the director Mr. Dye was able to purchase it 2 weeks prior. The team is working on providing all
the preventative information that gather all the gifts, prizes to the students. The Plinko game was
a bit boring so I made it more noticing for the student. I decorated the board with say no to drugs
signs and ponder before you partake on bright paper so that I will be visible.
I am looking forward in to being able to individual speak with the students and get there
opinion on our program and provide them with prevention material that they can read up on.
Also, I cant wait to give out prizes!!!!

As always I will be accessible to the team. This is my last week working on this project
which will be more demanding because I have committed to be there daily. I will be prompt and
help the team as necessary. I am grateful for this opportunity to be a part of great initiative that
promotes wellness. I was given access to attending meetings where government makes decision
that effects the community that I live in with goals of making citizens safe, aware and able to
partner with them.
