Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to call attention to the growing issue in the United States which is prison
overcrowding. Out of every country in the world, including China, India and all the other largepopulation based countries, the United States ranks number one in the most incarcerated people
with 2.6 million all across the country. This means the prisons, both state and federal, are
operating at 99 percent capacity. There is no room for these people to keep coming back as
repeat offenders because they know they will come back and then get out on parole or some
other program to their sentence reduced.
Along with this, states are forced to spend millions of dollars on the incarceration of people even
when they dont have the money. According to Michael Jacobsons Downsizing Prisons: How to
Reduce Crime and End Mass Incarceration In 2003, thirty-nine states faced budget gaps, and in
20 of those states the gaps were over 10% of the general fund budget. This means that they will

have to make a decision on whether to cut departments such as education and correctional
facilities, so they decide to cut the correctional facilities.
I think the solution to these issues is to spend/focus more on spending money toward child
therapists and they talk about something that is going on at home, we can put the true monsters
away forever: the parents who hurt their own children. This will decrease the crime rates
dramatically and will also help people to feel safe in their own neighborhoods. Thank you for
your time.
