Materials

I will begin by talking with the students about what

they have already done during the measurement unit. I
will ask the students if they know what a ruler is and
what information they already know about the ruler.
I will demonstrate on the smart board how to use a
ruler and what the proper ways of measuring with a
ruler are. I will tell the students that you line the edge
of the ruler or wherever the number 0 is on the ruler up
with the edge of the object they are measuring. We
will also review what to do if the object is not at a
whole number on the ruler (go to the next whole
number or use fractions?) We will also talk about what
to do if you need two rulers to measure a certain object.
After we have discussed how to properly use a ruler we
will measure some objects on the smart board. I will
demonstrate for one or two items and then call students
to come and give it a try at the smart board.
Students will be broken up into pairs (assigned or
random?) and with their partners will measure different
objects throughout the room. They will measure
objects such as pencils, the width of their paper, the
seat of their chair, the partners forearm, and hand, as
well as one object of their choice. Before sending the
students to get to work I will remind the students how
to properly measure with a ruler and we will discuss
how to treat the rulers so that none get broken and no
one gets hurt!
To close the lesson we will compare all of the
measurements for the standard objects in the room such
as the seat of the chair, their papers, and their pencils.
Students will also be able to share some the other
measurements that they found.
