1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
The fantasy is that you have flexible hours and get paid a high amount for the product produced. The reality is that
the time involved to create the product is done outside the view of the client resulting in many more hours worked
than presumed and a lot less money per hour.
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
(educational level and requirements)
My highest education is MBA but that is not required to do this job. Business, finance, accounting and marketing
are all very important in running a business however. Photography education is ongoing to learn new techniques
and equipment as trends emerge.
3. Please describe the typical day-to-day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
My day is about 10% photographing clients, 60% doing business management and the rest doing production. I do
outsource some of the production pieces so that I can spend more time running the business.
4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
(job security)
My position is secure as I am the owner of the business. I think the future is in a downward trend. I still enjoy it
but will probably reduce my working hours in the near future. As a result my income will decline.

5. Are there any safety concerns involved with the job?

I have concerns about my safety but more so the safety of my clients. I have a lot of equipment which could fall
on someone. I provide as secure an environment as I can for the safety of my employees and clients.
6. What potential for growth is there in your field?
(growth potential)
I dont think there is much potential for growth in this field. The demand for photographic products is declining as
more individuals chose a do-it-yourself approach to meeting their photographic needs. For those who do value
fine portraiture there is still a market but it is smaller than it used to be.
7. Whats the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is when as a result of my knowledge and techniques someone sees themself as more
beautiful than they realized.
8. What is the hardest part of your job?
The hardest part of the job is managing expectations. Most of the clients do not realize how much effort is done
behind the scenes.
9. How much social interaction is there involved in your job?
The job is social but also isolating. A large amount of time is spent behind a computer. However if you choose to
do person to person marketing you will have an opportunity to meet many potential clients in social
environments. The interaction between the photographer and the client is also important. I do a consultation
before the session, then do the session, then do in-person sales and in-person pickup. I meet with the client about
4 times and a minimum of 3-4 hours per client/session.
10. Why did you choose this field of study?

I like the instant feedback of whether or not I did a good job. I immediately know if I need to improve
my skills or where my skills may be lacking. I also know when I do an amazing job and get the sense of
satisfaction when my clients love their images.
