As of 2013 there are 193 states, Before 500 years ago, states were recognized as citystates, empires and feudal fiefs. The role of states has significantly changed over time.
For one, as of 2013
there are 193 states. Before 500 years ago, states were recognized as citystates, empires and feudal fiefs. There wasnt really any sense of identity within these states; they were mixed with all kinds of political views. Nowadays there is such a thing called the international system which sets certain rules, rights, and responsibilities that states should have. In older times city-states and empires didnt have an organization that they were all a part of that set boundaries for what they could and couldnt do. They could basically do what they want and conquer whoever they wanted to. Today most states have fewer than 10 million people. With the creation of these relatively small states, states differ dramatically in their GDPs. States are also different today in the fact that some of them have sovereignty over the others. Although they cannot tell each other what to do per se, huge and powerful states like the US have a significant influence over much of the other states. I believe that the states that we have in place now are sufficient. I dont think its necessary to create any more states just because we want to. The only reason why a state should be created going forward is if a large group of people are being oppressed by the state they are already a part of. In that case I think it is ok to break away and create your own state because no one should have to live in despair and fear. If the group of people can prove that they want to create their own state so that they can live in peace and if they feel that they can successfully govern their people, then by all means they should do so. For all other reasons such as cultural differences, territory disputes, religious disputes, etc., I dont think the creation of a new state is necessary. As long as the people arent being killed, starved, or mistreated, then they should stay where they are. The reason I believe this is because the more sub states you create, the more confusion and chaos there will be. When you start making states that are so similar to each other in terms of culture, political views, and religious views, problems might arrive. People will constantly be arguing over territory and other such things and then fighting will ensue. So in conclusion I believe that the states we have now are useful because we can trade with each other and help one another. However when you start creating these small states that have no purpose and do nothing to contribute to the world economy, then its just a waste of time and energy in some cases. For example, although Israel is a state, they are still fighting with Palestine to this day over land and territory. I fear that this will be the
outcome of other new states if we keep allowing people to just start their own governments.
