1.

Bell Work: The idea behind bell work is that students are
engaged in an activity as soon as they enter the room and
are therefore focused on the subject. Bell work allows the
student to begin the learning process on their own and
reinforces that the classroom is a place for learning.
Quickly and in their own words define what they think
the afterlife is.
2. Anticipatory Set: Before you dig into the meat of your
lesson's instruction, set the stage for your students by tapping
into their prior knowledge and giving the lesson objective(s) a
context.
What word choice does Whitman use to present a
positive outlook on life, how his does his poem represent
Transcendentalism?
3. Direct Instruction: When writing your lesson plan, this is the
section where you explicitly delineate how you will present the
lesson's concepts to your students. (Remember the Age + 2
rule! Students can focus for a period of time equal to their age
plus 2 minutes.)
Give lecture on background of Walt Whitman, his poetry
style and Transcendentalists view on the afterlife.
4. Guided Practice: Under your supervision, the students are
given a chance to practice and apply the skills you taught them
through direct instruction.
Read the excerpt as a class and have the students
underline where they see the theme of the afterlife.
5. Formative Assessment: This type of assessment is used
before, during or after instruction to help students improve
learning or to guide the teacher in planning and improving
instruction.
Students are required to share on example they
underlined and ask a question to get full participation
points.
6. Closure: In the Closure section, outline how you will wrap up
the lesson by giving the lesson concepts further meaning for
your students.
