Systems
Chapter 37

Facts about your blood

1.You have about 100,000 miles of
blood vessels.
2.Women have 4.5 liters of blood
where as men have 5.6 liters.
3.Two million blood cells die every
second.
4.Average life span of a red blood
cell is 120 days.
5.About 7% of your weight is blood.

Circulatory System
The human circulatory system consists
of:
Heart
Blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries)
Blood

Circulatory System
The heart

Surrounded by a protective sac of tissue

called the pericardium
In the walls of the heart, there are two
thin layers of tissue that sandwich around
a thick layer of muscle called the
myocardium (what actually pumps the
blood)

Beats on average 72 times a minute

70 milliliters of blood every contraction
During one year, an average persons heart pumps enough blood to fill
an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Circulatory System
The heart

Human heart is divided into four chambers.

The two upper chambers (which receive
blood) are called the atrium
The two lower chambers (which pump blood
out) are called the ventricle

Circulatory System
As blood flows through the circulatory
system, it moves through three types
of blood vessels:
1. Arteries

Lead blood away from the heart

2. Capillaries

Smallest of blood vessels (only one cell in

width)

3. Veins

Lead blood to the heart.

Circulatory System

Circulatory System
Red Blood Cells

Transport oxygen
Gain their color from Hemoglobin (protein
that allows them to carry oxygen)
Shaped liked disks that are thinner in
the middle

Circulatory System
White Blood Cells

Called leukocytes
Do not contain hemoglobin
They guard against infection, fight
parasites, and attack bacteria

Circulatory System
Blood Clots
Blood clotting is
made possible by
plasma proteins
and cell
fragments called
platelets.

Circulatory System
Lymphatic System
Network of
vessels, nodes, and
organs that collect
fluid lost by the
blood and return it
back to the
circulatory system.

Respiratory System
The function of the respiratory system
is to..
Bring about the exchange of oxygen and
carbon dioxide between the blood, air, and
tissues.

Respiratory System

Parts of the respiratory system:

1. Pharynx: Passageway for air and food
2. Trachea: Windpipe into lungs
Flap of tissue called the epiglottis covers
the trachea when you swallow.
3. Larynx: Contains your vocal chords
4. Bronchi: Large airways that lead into the
lungs
5. Alveoli: Tiny air sacs that carry out gas
exchange
6. Diaphragm: Large, flat muscle that controls
breathing

Respiratory System
Breathing is controlled by your brain in
the medulla oblongata.
It monitors the amount of Carbon
Dioxide in the blood.
If needed, the nervous system will
force you to breathe when CO2 levels
are to high.
