When I was considering my options for colleges, I knew that I wanted a smaller school that
was welcoming and where people could walk on campus and feel the school spirit flowing
through the students and teachers and through the halls. Also, a school with friendly,
hospitable people who enjoyed being involved was something I was looking for. Upon
walking through the doors of the Campus Center for an open house, I could feel that spirit
and see the warmth in the smiling faces of the people who were there. It is not something
that can be easily described. One must experience the feeling to understand fully what I felt
that day and every day since I visited Holy Family

As a PreK-4/Special Education (PreK-8) major, I have learned and am continuing to
discover the many facets of teaching young children, including classroom management,
instructional strategies, and creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning
and exploration for all children of all abilities and learning styles. The program requires
students to complete observation, practicum, and student teaching field experiences in
order for us to apply our knowledge and newly formed skills within the classroom.

Name: Catherine Maier Tottser
Major: MSN Nursing Education
Graduation date: 2009

Body:
The degree which I obtained was an MSN in nursing education. I enjoyed every aspect of
the program. Due to the small number of students in each class, the professors and
students were able to interact as a group. All of the professors were passionate about their
area of expertise in nursing. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about topics in nursing that I had
not learned in my undergraduate studies. I chose this degree because I knew I wanted to
continue my career as a nurse educator.
OR
While obtaining my MSN, I believe that all of the professors treated us like family. Since all
of the classes were small when I was enrolled in the MSN program, the professors were
able to provide an atmosphere based on the values of Holy Family University. They
promoted an atmosphere with the attention to the spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional,
and physical needs of each student. As an adjunct clinical instructor, I have carried this type
of value into the clinical setting. I am able to treat students as individuals and promote an
atmosphere conducive to Holy Familys values.

I am majoring in Biology and I absolutely adore it. My goal is to become a doctor, so being
at Holy Family is the first major stepping stone in my journey. The small class sizes have
given me the opportunity to have personal relationships with my professors and I enjoy

having the one-on-one experience especially when i can go to them for help if i'm struggling
in a class.

My favorite part of being a Biology major is when I finally have that Eureka moment when
all the material I learn is connected-I absolutely love science and when I can connect things
i've learned to real life problems, it is a great feeling.

Holy Family truly prepared me for the nursing profession. We were being taught by what I
believe were some of the best nurses in the profession. They helped us make sense of
what we were learning by applying it to real-life situations. It is one of the main reasons that
i decided to come back to Holy Family to pursue a Masters in Nursing Education. I wanted
to be able to do for students what my instructors did for me.

With my clinical experience, I was able to get a job shortly after graduation. Holy Family
helped set the tone of the type of nurse I would be, which led to many more opportunities in
my career.

It is a great feeling to know that people care about you and your success. I hope to bring
that same feeling to my students as I begin my career as a faculty member. Holy Family
meant so much to me, and still does to this day. My undergraduate years were truly the best
4 years of my life and i wouldn't have done it differently if i was given the chance.

My expectations far exceeded anything I could imagine. I desired to achieve a BSN but I
became a much better nurse, educator and person in the process. There was never a time
when I was not made to feel special. My education mattered to everyone I came in contact
with and this was from day one of starting in the program. Holy Family has provided me with
the tools and skills to successfully lead others. Being a part of Holy Family has infused me
with a greater sense of giving, and my intention is to pay it forward and carry on the
mission.

Knowing that HFU is for the majority a commuter school, I assumed most people would go
home directly after class. Even though I was commuting to college, I didn't want my
experience to be a direct reflection of the typical commuter stereotype. I've always been
one to get involved. Right after the Accepted Students session I attended, I went on HFU's
website and contacted clubs and activities that I would be interested in and that would
coincide with my studies. After taking classes, I saw that while yes some students decided
to leave campus, many stayed. I had made such a connection with people that it brought us
to talking outside of the classroom and into the halls or outside of the Campus Center. I
wanted to be involved as much as I could and I found myself surrounded with others with
those same values.

I chose Holy Family because I prefer the supportive faculty and established reputation as a
high quality university with faith and family values. In addition, the flexibility of the classroom
paths allowed me to maintain my full time position in staff education. The professors were
supportive in assisting me in meeting these goals. During my student rotations I had many
opportunities to use the skills learned in the classroom and i had many chances of
interacting with nursing students from many of the nursing schools.

My most memorable experiences that I have taken away from my time as a graduate and
undergraduate student at Holy Family University involved the shared adult-learning process.
Most of my fellow students were relatively in my same age bracket and we shared many of
our professional experiences and dilemmas in class. In addition. the fact that most of my
facilitators were full-time professionals and part-time instructors added real-world relativity
to each course; making for an easier understanding of the subject matter.

When I arrived at HFU it was as I expected, rigorous and challenging. Holy Family is well
connected to schools in the city and the suburbs with respect to student teaching/practicum
opportunities and provides knowledgeable faculty. The opportunities to work with faculty
that have real-world experience in schools was invaluable based on their understanding of
the practices in the field. I was well prepared for my student teaching and subsequent

My favorite part of HFU nursing studies has to be the deep sense of satisfaction I feel when
yet another successful semester is behind me. Nursing is regarded as perhaps one of the
most rigorous undergraduate programs there is, and Holy Family does not fall short on its

absolutely critical to the successful development of a well prepared graduate nurse, and no
simulation can ever equate.
