Date of Observation: 04/07/2015 Class Observed: TE 331 Electronic Communication Technology Observer: Joe Hicks Pre-Observation Conference: 04/06/2015 Dr. Kalonde and I met to discuss the upcoming lesson. The lesson serves as an introduction to the topic of, hardware for educators as supported by the course text. Observation of Teaching: *Knowledge & Application Dr. Kalonde demonstrated a significant knowledge base and application concerning the target lesson content. Prior to the lesson even starting, he created a visual of the binary code on the board that he used to activate student interest. Furthermore, he routinely alternated between introducing content and providing real-world examples to apply these concepts. These examples typically included a visual and were highly relevant to the lives of the students. *Organization The organization of the class reflected considerable thought and execution. Beginning with a clear set of objectives for the unit, Dr. Kalonde moved into a purposeful sequence that included whole group, partner and individual work with the material. Within the fifty minute lesson, subtopics were addressed in manageable segments of time that connected back to the central objectives of the lesson. *Delivery
Dr. Kalonde is a skilled communicator who makes a concerted
effort to deliver his lesson in a way that connects with all learning modalities. His use of voice inflection, hand gestures and movement enhances the effectiveness of his message. The lesson incorporated a balance of multimedia, demonstration, independent work, collaboration, and questioning strategies. Dr. Kalonde expertly invited his students into the lesson and created multiple access points for their contributions and to develop ownership in the topics. Information was disseminated in a meaningful and effective fashion. *Assessment Dr. Kalonde incorporated multiple strategies to assess the understanding of his students. For example, after modeling the binary code process, Dr. Kalonde called on students to come up to the front of the room and talk through how they arrived at their solution to the sequence. In addition, he routinely presented questions of understanding to gauge the students comfort level. Furthermore, students exchanged application sheets to evaluate each other for understanding. This approach allowed time for him to work with individuals who appeared to lack full comprehension of the assessed skill. For this introductory lesson, Dr. Kalonde was able to successfully incorporate both pre and formative assessments during this lesson. *Student Feedback In following up with students following the lesson, it was evident Dr. Kalonde has established a positive rapport with his students. They know he will hold them accountable and must be present and prepared. *Post-Observation Conference: 04/14/2015 Dr. Kalonde and I met to discuss the lesson and to get a sense of how the unit has progressed since the observation. Topics included: content, questioning and lesson closure. I learned a considerable amount myself both in content and pedagogy during Dr. Kalondes lesson.
