Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students will play the role of a migrant and design a letter describing their motives for going to the United States
Students will read Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, and discuss working conditions in groups and analyze programs designed to help better those
conditions
Students will create a t-chart in order to weigh the pros and cons of industrialization
Unit Summary:

This unit is aimed towards high school students to understand the effects of industrialization in a social setting.
Students will analyze the interactions of industrialization, migration, and immigration. Most notably, the diaspora of
Southern and Eastern Europeans in the United States. Students will examine the impact it had on economic
development and political policies. Students will understand both the good and bad outcomes of industrialization
within society

Lecture/Guided Notes- Students will be given a brief


introduction on industrialization and examine some components
such as impact on the working class, environment, etc.
Quiz: America Rises to Power- Students will review what they
know through a quiz. They will demonstrate their understanding
of the factors that helped America rise to power.

Webercise- Students will be given websites and asked questions


accordingly. They will be able to explore industrialization and
help them form an opinion over its role on society.
Brainstorm- Students will access what they already know about
immigration and migration

Compare and Contrast: Immigrants & Migrants- Students


will compare and contrast the difference between immigrants
and migrants. They will take special consideration to
migration from rural to urban areas and immigrants from

Southern and Eastern Europe.

Lesson Activities:
KWL chart- Students will approach the book by filling out the
KWL chart. They will state their previous knowledge about
the topic, followed by questions they have. Finally they will
answer their questions revealing what they took from the
reading.
Key Words- Students will be able to review key words or
ideas. Major events or names are used throughout the book.
Letter: Writing back home- Students will take on the role of
an immigrant and write a letter back home. They will
describe the working conditions and overall environment
