Lesson #2
Unit Title: A Reintroduction of Counting in Beginning Band
Lesson Title: Rhythm Flash Game
Grade Level: 5th or 6th grade beginning band
Subjects Integrated: Music
Objectives: To expose the students to rhythm reading and expanding their listening skills
Materials: Pre-made flashcards
Learning Activities
a) Instructional Materials: The kids will only need their bodies and the flashcards that
the teacher provides.
b) Procedures: The students will be split into two groups. The two groups will the go
back and forth preforming each flashcard by clapping and saying the rhythms depict-ed.
The team with the most correct cards at the end of the game wins.
c) Instructional Groups: Placing the students into teams allows them to both work
together and support their teammates just like in band.
d) Discussion: If neither of the teams can perform the correct rhythm I will ask
individual student who knows how it should go to demonstrate in front of the class.
e) Assessment: A mental formative assessment will be performed by the instructor
during the game. The students who are still struggling or not participate will be
noticeable in the larger group setting. Later on those students will need more attention.
Closure
a) The lesson will end by naming a winner and asking the students to bring a pre-pared
rhythm to class the following day.
b) The lesson will be evaluated by how well the students retain and can produce the
information presented to them.

ART.M.I.5.9: Use a system to read rhythmic notation in various meters.
