Student Teaching Spring 2015

Pennfield Middle School & High School

Lesson #5b
Unit Title: A Reintroduction of Counting in Beginning Band
Lesson Title: Discovering Note Relationships (Day 2 of 3)
Grade Level: 5th or 6th grade beginning band
Subjects Integrated: Music and math
Objectives: To recognize the different notes of modern western music and their relation to one
another
Materials: Paper handouts
Learning Activities
a) Instructional Materials: The students will be given manuscript paper and will be
asked to take out a sheet of blank lined paper for notes.
b) Procedures: On day two of the lesson the students will start with a quick verbal
review of the previous day. They will have a discussion and draw a diagram of the note
tree. This shows the relationships be-tween the lengths of notes and it will help the
students understand time signatures in the future. It should be explained that all the
rhythms they have practice have been in 4/4 time which means there are 4 beats in each
measure and the quarter note gets the beat. They will practice making their own measure
rhythm on their manuscript paper. They can use any combination of eighth, quarter, half,
or whole notes to complete this measure but it must only be 4 beats. The teacher should
walk around and, once their first measure has been checked to see if they are on the right
track, they will be assigned to do a second measure.
c) Instructional Groups: The students will be encouraged to ask questions and inquire
about information they dont understand.
d) Discussion: The students will verbally be asked questions such as how many beats
does this note get, how many quarter notes equal a half note, and can you clap these
notes for me?
e) Assessment: The students will be given brief formative assessments mentally by the
teacher. This will include areas such as their progress, attention, and involvement. They
will also be assessed using short homework assignments.
Closure
a) The lesson will be ended by having the students pack up
b) The lesson will be evaluated how well the students have gained a simple understanding
of note lengths.
Standards
