Suzanne Collins timeline

August 10, 1962 -Collins was born. Born in Hartford, Connecticut to an Air Force
commander and history teacher, Collins grew up in a good house with a loving
family. They moved around a lot, but she was raised well.
1980-Collins graduated. After another move with her family, Collins graduated from
the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham. She majored in theater arts.
1985-Collins graduated from Indiana University. A double major in theater and
telecommunications sent Collins on to earn her M.F.A in dramatic writing from the
New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
1991-Collins began her career. Several Nickelodeon childrens shows propelled
Collins into her writing career. Little Bear, Clarissa Explains It All, and Cliffords
Puppy Days were several of her earliest television shows.
2003-The Underland Chronicles were written. (2003-2007) After meeting James
Proimos, childrens author, Collins was inspired to write childrens novels as well.
The first five books in the series were written and released in five years.
2004-Collins received an award. NAIBA presented Collins with the Childrens Novel
Award.
September 2008-Hunger Games was released. Inspired by the Greek myth of
Theseus and the Minotaur and her fathers career, Collins explored poverty,
starvation, and war effects in her trilogy.
2008-The Hunger Games receives praise. Stephanie Meyer, author of the Twilight
series, called The Hunger Games amazing. The book was 2008s most notable book
by the New York Times.
September 2009-Catching Fire released. Suzanne was surprised that her first novel
had so much success. She immediately got the second one ready for release.
2010-Collins received another award. The Georgia Peach Book Award for Ten
Readers was given to Suzanne in 2010. She was also honored with the California
Young Reader Medal.
August 24, 2010-Mockinjay was released. With the success of the first two books,
the third in the trilogy was released.
April 2011-Lions Gate began filming The Hunger Games. Collins, alone, adapted her
novel for film. Lions Gate Entertainment acquired worldwide rights to distribution
and Gary Ross directed the film.
2010-Collins received an award from Time magazine. Named one of Time
magazines most influential people of 2010, Collins was honored and inspired to
keep writing.

March 2012-Collins received more recognition. Kindle announced that Collins was
the best-selling Kindle author of all time. Also, Amazon mentioned that Collins wrote
29 out of the top 100 Kindle eBooks. Collins novels are popular with children and
young adults. With the success of The Hunger Games, adults are even appreciative
of her work. While most of her writing is science fiction, it is taken from her parents
love of history and her life as a teen.
