MY TARGET PROFESSION
Please paste your initial discussion board post from L1, describing your target job:
Since I was a little girl I always knew that I wanted to be a mother and as I grew up that feeling has only grown stronger. My target
job would to run a Daycare for children from birth to 5 years old. I have always babysat growing up in my teens but my main jobs were
always in the restaurant industry as a server, bartender or busser. These jobs differ from running or working in a Daycare because I would
teach children and help develop their gross and fine motor skills. If I really think about it, serving is much like taking care of a child. For
example, as a waitress I had to make sure that the guests needs were met, well taken care of and that they leave the establishment happy. I
had to clean up after people when they are finished eating, re-fill their drinks and communicate to management if anything was wrong.
In a Daycare I would have to clean up after the children a lot more and in different areas than just food. I would also have to be able
to communicate to the parents or guardians when something went wrong with their child. With my prior experience in the service industry
I believe that it gave me valuable lessons that I will be able to take with me to my target job like patience and using appropriate language
and emotions. My target career is nested in education and development.

My Future 21st Century Job
Samantha Friedman
After I graduate next May from Arizona State University my future job would be to run or work at a Daycare for children and
prepare them for Kindergarten. According to the article, Become a Day Care Owner, Day care owners are childcare workers who provide
a place, either in their home or in a commercial facility, for children of working parents to stay during the day. They're responsible for the
safety, health, nutritional needs and educational development of children (2015).
Many people believe that I could run a Daycare without a college education, which is definitely true but again, the article, Become
a Day Care Owner states that, Postsecondary education may improve job prospects (2015). I believe that only having a high school
diploma can only get me so far in what I would like to achieve. Also, having the information that I am learning in college, I would not

change for the world. I have learned so much about child development and psychology that in the end it can only help further my future
job.
Whether I am working at or owning a Daycare it is still essential that I focus on the student outcomes in the classroom. The
Partnership for 21st Century Skills states that the core subjects are, English, reading or language arts, world languages, arts, math,
economics, science, geography, history and government and civics (2009, p. 2). Becoming a Daycare worker I will not only have to keep
up with the licenses, CPR, health and aid certification and fingerprint clearance I will have to adjust to the teaching and learning styles as
the decades continue to change. With times changing and technology continuing to be used more than chalkboards, students do not even
learn cursive in the classroom anymore. ATC21S defined, Ten 21st-century skills into four broad categories. These have been group as,
knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and ethics (2012). The board categories are, Ways of thinking, tools for working, ways of working
and ways of living in the world (Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills (2012). According to the Key competences for lifelong
learning, Individuals should have the skills to communicate both orally and in writing in a variety of communicative situations and to
monitor and adapt their own communication to the requirements of the situation (2007, p. 4). It would be my job to make sure that my
teachers and I are doing so.
Another thing that I find important is that one must have the, Essentials skills for communication in foreign languages consist of
the ability to understand spoken messages, to initiate, sustain and conclude conversations and to read, understand and produce texts

appropriate to the individuals needs (Key Competences for Lifelong Learning, 2007, p. 5). Classrooms today are extremely diverse and I
think that the best teachers are ones that will be able to communicate with everyone.
