Nursing as a Discipline

Occupation
Most people use the terms occupation and profession synonymously, not
understanding that there is a difference. . Occupation has many meanings. According to
dictionary.com, occupation means a persons usual or principal work or business, especially as a
means of earning a living; vocation (www.dictionary.reference.com, 2013, p. 1). Florence
Nightingale started the occupation of nurses by recruiting prostitutes to care for the sick and
wounded that no one else would care for. She provided them with technical skills that were
learned on the job training in the hospital. Florence Nightingale wanted these women to be
educated at a time when women didnt get education and were not allowed to work in public
service (Alligood & Tomey, 2010, p. 4).
Profession
The word profession can be defined as an occupation or vocation that requires some body
of science or knowledge of some learned education (www.dictionary.reference.com, 2013, p. 1).
According to Alligood, nursing went from being an occupation in the mid-1930s to a profession
when hospital-based diploma programs began going into colleges and universities (Alligood &
Tomey, 2010, p. 4). The goal was for nurses to be college educated with at least an associate
degree or bachelors degree. Shortly after this change; research and masters program began
coming into light tandemly (Alligood & Tomey, 2010, p. 4).
Nursing Practice
The discipline of nursing is guided by the nurse practice act and the Maryland
board of nursing. Nurses must practice within their scope of practice and within their licensure.
Nurses have an ethical code of conduct; all of these things guide how a nurse practices. All

NURSING AS A DISCIPLINE
nurses must practice standards of practice which are: assessment, diagnosis, outcome
identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care health, teaching and health
promotion, consultation and prospective, authority and treatment, and evaluation (, 2011, p. 9).
Nursing Education.
The discipline of nursing uses theoretic and practical skills to teach nurses how to
function in their area of nursing. A nursing educator helps keep all the nurses in an area up to
date with mandatory requirements set by the states and by the employers. The area of education
is very broad and all skills must be documented and proving to be completed.
Nursing Research
The discipline of nursing is guided by nursing research. Research guides nursings
evidence based practice. It helps nursing to have better patient outcomes and change the way
nursing practices by using scientific studies with statically data that can be repeated and proven.
Overall the debate continues on whether nursing is an occupation or a profession but there is
much scientific evidence that proves that nursing certainly is a very proud ethical caring
educated profession.
