Lesson Plan Project
MUS 150
Stringham

Setting: General elementary and middle school music, specifically oriented
for grades 4, 5, and 6.
1. Objective
Students will listen to, analyze, and compose piece using the iPad application,
Auxy, with a focus in texture and phrasing, as well as an emphasis on
rhythmic patterns and repeats.
2. Procedures/Activities
a) After asking the students to listen carefully for outstanding repeated
sections or patterns, Teacher will play samples of electronic dance
music (preferably a popular song that are often played on the radio).
Then, Teacher will then play the same song, but a stripped version that
layers each overlapping melody one by one, so students can hear the
song be broken down and put back together.
b) Teacher will then divide the group into four sections, and do a small
activity during which each section of students repeats a different
melody, in a sort of round style, or in the way an a cappella
arrangement is produced, which gives the students the chance to hear
how their particular part compliments and contrasts the other parts, as
well as the group as a whole.
c) Teacher will then explain the assignment, as well as basic instructions
on how to use the application, Auxy.
d) Teacher will randomly divide the class into groups of four.
e) Students will get into given groups and begin project in class. Students
will have approximately 30 minutes to complete the project.
f) After 30 minutes, each group will have 2 minutes to present their
compositions after a brief explanation of their inspiration or theme and
creative process, while students who are not presenting evaluate the
work being presented on organization, creativity, musicality, and
overall thoughts on their peers composition on half-sheets of paper to
be turned in at the end of class.
g) Students will be asked to write a 2-paragraph reflection for homework.
3. Assessment
Students will be graded on completion of the composition itself, as well as
the peer-evaluations. A complete grade will be awarded to groups who
have a complete composition, and a thorough explanation/presentation.
4. Assignment
The students will have 30 minutes to experiment organize, and compose a
short electronic composition using the application, Auxy with an emphasis on
the use of rhythmic patterns and repeats. The students will also be assigned a
2-paragraph reflection (out of 10 points) that is to be done for homework
and turned in the next class. The reflection will ask students to discuss their

thoughts and experiences regarding their composition, the compositions of

their peers, the use of the application, Auxy, and overall feedback.
5. Rubric
Effective use of patterns reflected in different layers 0 1 2
Effective use of repeats (does it make sense?) 0 1 2
Strong group effort 0 1 2
