Standard 3.b. Implementing and Managing Standards-Based

ESL and Content Instruction
The artifacts I choose to represent standard 3b come from the routines that I carry
out in my first grade class. The first artifact is my March 2, 2015 weekly homework
sheet. This artifact is evidence of how I implement a variety of standards-based
teaching strategies and techniques for developing and integrating English listening,
speaking, reading and writing. The second artifact is a picture of group behavior chart
titled Tally Up Good Behavior. This artifact demonstrated my understanding of
individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that
encourages positive social interaction and self-motivation.
Creating weekly homework sheets with the ten new vocabulary words which the
students have to use in their homework, class discussion, morning writing, and locate in
their independent reading books throughout the week, has expanded my knowledge of the
repetition that ELL students need in order to take ownership of the new vocabulary words
we introduce to them. I designed this homework sheet to ensure that my student become
familiarized with the sight words they will see in their books. When it comes to this
artifact, the area my teaching still needs to grow is maybe having more word games with
the weekly sight words so that the students can look at the words as something they want
to learn rather than something they have to learn.
Regarding my second artifact, Tally Up Good Behavior chart has increased my
knowledge how I create a learning environment that allows students to share their ideas
and feel confident in their work. Groups only earn a tally mark if all the members of the
group are behaving in a proper and acceptable matter and are completing their
assignment. At the end of the week the group with the most tally marks earns a prize.

This has lead to individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning
environment that encourages positive social interaction and self-motivation because they
all want to earn a prize at the end of the week.
These artifacts have contributed to my professional understanding of this
standard by giving me awareness of how important it is to incorporate vocabulary
whenever possible; however, without a learning environment that encourages positive
social interaction students will not be able to express their ideas and will feel intimidated
by others students and, therefor will to a disarray in the classroom.
An area in which I would consider improving when it comes to this part of the 3b
standards is making the Tally Up Good Behavior chart more personal to my students.
Possibly having the students sign contracts at the beginning of the year and giving them a
tally whenever they keep their end of the signed agreement.
