REFLECTION JOURNAL
WEEK 7: APRIL 8TH 2015
Overview
This was our second to last unit for this internship and for week 7 we decided to
do a unit on badminton. On February 8th I taught a lesson on badminton serving to the 20
4th grade students. I began with the students self juggling with a racquet and moved into
them trying to serve a birdie into a hula hoop. For this lesson the teacher will need 20
racquets, 20 poly spots, 20 jerseys, and 10 hula hoops as well as a large open area. This
lesson was one of the more difficult lessons for me this semester; the students had trouble
with hand eye coordination and a combination of the wind also made it difficult for the
students

juggling activity and done more practice with the underhand serve. I would have
progressed it from larger objects to the smaller birdie.

standing at a place where I could keep an eye on all the students. With that said moved
around to most of the activity area but it was not as often as normal.
For this lesson I accidently messed up my instructions for the rules of serving.
During my cues and instruction I told them that the racquet must remain under their waist
when they serve, but what I should have told them was that they must make contact
below the waist and can follow through above the body. This caused my instructions and
my demonstration to be incorrect. During my instructions, I kept them short and simple,
I was very clear and the entire student could hear me when I spoke. Due to the fact that I
gave the students the wrong information during the introduction, I was performing the
cues wrong to the students and they kept calling me out for bringing the racquet above
my waist. The students did a great job pointing out that I was not performing the skill the
way I told them to do it. Because I was performing it incorrectly, I refrained from
demonstrating later in the lesson.
All the equipment was pre set up so that no transitions or equipment movement
would be necessary, unfortunately I made the mistake of having the students collect all
the racquets after the first activity even though they would have needed it for the second
activity. Instead of collecting the equipment I could have allowed the students to keep
their equipment just to place it on the floor. There were not many issues of students
misbehaving during this lesson, the only person who received a strike was Osiel and he
only received it for leaving his poly spot and ignoring my instructions.
From this past week, I feel that one of my strengths continues to be my
communication skills with the students and they could all hear and understand me. I also
felt I did a good job controlling when the students would go and when they could go grab

their birdie. My origination of the poly spots and differently jersey color was another
strength for me this week in the sense that I was able to use it to control them and I could
be very specific with my instructions. I think next week I could try to continue to involve
sportsmanship into my lesson. I also next week could be more prepared with the skill
that I need to present to the students. I think that I can try to increase the number of
adaptations to my lessons to allow all the students to practice at a high skill level.
