OBOE NEWS

MAY 2015
from Alisons Studio

Welcome to Herbie Wasson who has recently started lessons with me.
Francesca Orchard-Hall had a wonderful experience playing First Oboe in
the NZ Secondary Schools Orchestra in Christchurch during the holidays.
A lot of you came to the NZDRS DR Festival and appear to have had an
enjoyable, stimulating and enriching experience.

clarinet, bassoon and saxophone) are invited to play for and with the university's woodwind
performance staff. The day includes warm up sessions covering aspects of good technique, master
classes where students will perform solo works they've prepared, chamber music sessions and a grand
finale concert. Sign up at https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/secondary-school-workshop-woodwindtickets-16076968646
NATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION
The Auckland round for this amazing competition runs from Wed 3 7 June with
almost 120 groups taking part. Best of luck to Francesca Orchard-Hall, Holly
Butt, Noah Rudd, Louise Hwang, Su In Jeong, Emma Wu, Sarah Fouhy,
Matilda Hur and Emily Zou who are competing. Groups are now starting to
perform their pieces in public to get the best preparation possible. All of these
players are NZDRS members and can come along to chamber music club and
Performers Evening to gain more input from double reed professional players
and performance opportunities.
The Auckland final (top 16 groups) is at 7pm on Sunday 7 June at the Raye
Freedman Centre, Epsom and is an inspiring event open to the general public.
IRMT SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION
This competition takes place on 26/27 September and is open to students of a
registered music teacher (Auckland branch). As I am such a person, my students

are eligible! Last year the woodwind class of $300 was won by Louise Hwang.
This year the prize is $350 with a second prize of $50 if there are six or more
competitors. Entries close on 26 July and cost $20.00. I encourage all my
students who are Grade 7 and above to enter. It is an excellent goal to work
towards and great if you are preparing for an exam in November.
EXAMS CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES
ABRSM:
Friday 22 May for exam in August/September
Friday 7 August for exam in November
If you are interested in taking an exam, remember that I expect you to have
learnt at least two pieces from each list (A, B,C), know all your scales (though not
from memory or up to speed) and be showing a good practice ethic by the exam
ENTRY date. Have a chat with me if you have any questions.
Finally please contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns about your
childs progress.
Best wishes,
Alison
