Submarinesareahighlyspecializedkindofboatthatcantraveleasily,quickly,andfor
longperiodsoftimeunderwater.
Inadditiontobeingusedbythemilitary,submarines
arealsousedtolearnmoreaboutwhat'sundertheocean.Asubmarineislongand
rounditisshapedlikeacylinder,soit'slongerthanitiswideorhighandcanbe
steeredunderwateraswellasgodeepbeneaththeseaoruptothesurfaceon
command.Submarineshaveanothersmallshapethatrisesfromthetopofthe
submarine,usuallyaroundthemiddle.There'salsoatailfinwithapropeller.
Thefirstsubmarineplansweredevelopedmorethan400yearsago,andthe
submarinesoftodaystilllookandworkinsimilarways.Thewayasubmarineworksis
thatithastanksthatarefilledwithwatertosinkitandemptiedofwaterandfilledwith
airtoraiseitbacktothesurface.
Originalsubmarinesweremadeofwood.Submarine
developmenttookoffinthe1800s,anditwasintheearly1900sthatsubmarinescame
intousebyAmericanandforeignnavies.Latersubmarineswerepoweredbysteam,
airindependentpropulsion,batterypower,dieselelectricpower,andnuclearpower.
Today'ssubmarinesaremadeofsteel.
OneoftheearliestsubmarinesusedbythemilitarywastheH.L.Hunley,aConfederate
submarinethatsankaUnionshipduringtheCivilWar.Inthe20thcentury,theuseof
submarinesbytheU.S.NavygrewduringWorldWarI,WorldWarII,theKoreanWar,
andtheVietnamWar,anditsusecontinuestoday.
Militaryusesforsubmarinesinclude
patrolandmonitoringaswellasactsofwarfare.Whileearlysubmarineswereusually
usedtoattacksurfaceships,submarinesarecapableoflaunchingmissilesthatcan
reachairplanesaswellastargetsonland.
Submarinesareusedinotherfields,too,likescientificresearchandtheenergy
industry.
Unlikemilitarysubmarines,thesesometimeshavewindows.Theyareusually
smallerthanmilitarysubmarines,too,andtheydon'tgounderwaterforaslong.These
submarinesmightholdonlyoneortwopeople.Submarinesusedforthesepurposes
aren'tloadedwithmissiles.They'reusedtoresearchunderseaanimalsandplants,look
atshipwrecks,orcheckonunderseapipelines.Roboticsubmarinesthatdon'thave
peopleinthemcanberemotelydrivenintoplaceswhereitisn'tsafeforhuman
explorers.
Today'sU.S.Navyhasnuclearpoweredsubmarinesthatcanbeunderwaterforsix
monthsormorebatteryoperatedsubsneedtosurfacemoreoftentorecharge.
A
nuclearpoweredsubmarinecantravelasfastas30milesperhour(25knots).A
commonperiodoftimeforsubmarinestobeawayisthreemonths.Thesearereallybig
watercraftabout300feetlong,30feetwide,andthreestorieshigh.There'sakitchen,
diningarea,bunksforsailors(calledberths)wheretheycansleep,workareasthat
includecomputersandelectronics,aswellasareasforsailorstousewhenthey'renot
working.Doorsbetweenareasoftheshipcanbesealedintheeventofanemergency
tokeepwaterout.Specialsystemsrecyclefreshairandwaterforusebythecrew.
Asubmarinecrewismadeupofabout100menormore(womenarenotusually
assignedtosubmarineduty).
Thecrewlivesandworksinclosequartersacrewman's
berthinasubmarineisonlyabout15squarefeetintotalsize.Sometimes,crew
membersneedtobeveryquietintheirspeechandintheirmovementsaroundtheship
submarinesmaytravelinwhat'scalledastealthmodewheretheytrytobeasquietand
undetectableaspossible.
Intheeventofanemergency,sailorscanescapealeakingordamagedsubmarinewith
specialjumpsuitsthatincludealifepreserverandhoodforanairpocket.
Everyone
movesintoonepartoftheship,thenthedoorissealedandavalveletswaterflowinto
thecompartment.Ahatchisopened,allowingsubmarinerstoswimthroughtheocean
tothesurface.
