knownforhumanandsextrafficking.Bangkok,ThailandistheplacecalledCityofAngelsand
economichitmanatradingcenterforgoodsfromeverycorneroftheworld.(Brown,2014)The
U.S.StateDepartmenthaswarnedThailandthatithasn'tbeendoingenoughtobattleagainst
humantrafficking.Humantraffickingisoneoftheworstformsofhumanindignity.Thailandis
committedtoeliminatingthisinhumaneexploitation,theThaiAmbassadortotheUnitedStates,
VijavatIsarabhakdi,saidinarecentpressstatement.(Brown,2014)InThailandthebiggest
areasofconcernaresextrafficking,andforcedlabor,particularnearinthefishingindustry.At
nightBangkoktransformsintothecitymostluxuriatecommodities.Manyforeignpeoplejust
traveltoBangkokforthesextrade.Thereisnoexactnumberofwomenandchildrenthatare
beingforcedeachyearintoprostitution.Humantraffickingneedstocometoanend.Women
arebeingexposetomanyconsequencestheyarenotawareof.StevenGalstonheadsthe
FreedomFoundation.TheyaremandatetohuntdownanimaltraffickersbroughtintoBangkoka
decadeago.(Channel,2015)
AudienceandPurpose
ThefirstgenreisaCNNnewsreportitiscalledTraffickingThailand'shumantrafficking
problem.Thenewsreportistryingtoinformourpeoplearoundsocietyonhowhuman
traffickingisbeingused.Humantraffickinginsocietytodayisviolatinghumanrights.
AccordingtoCNN225defendantswereconvictedin2013,overfourtimesmorethanthe
previousyear.Thegovernmenttooklegalactionagainstmorethan150illegallaborrecruitment

companiesforallegedcorruption,forcedlabor,humantraffickingandsmuggling.Thepolice
carriedoutover28,000policeinspectionsinworkplacessuspectedofbeingusedforcommercial
sexandforcedlabor,hesaid.(Brown,2014)Thesecondgenreisavideobasedonhowtostop
humantraffickinginthetwentyfirstcentury.Howitisaffectingwomenandhowithasbecome
anaddictiontowomenandmen.Womenconsideritasadailyjobtoraiseachildorjusttoget
passlife.Inrealityhumantraffickingisnotadailyjob.Itisviolatinghumanrightsandpolice
arearrestinghumantraffickers.ThevideosstatsThattheremissionistosavethousandsof
womenforcedtobesexslaves.(Channel,2015)
Theintendedaudienceisforgingmigrants,youth,maleandfemaleusuallypeoplewho
havealowincomeordonotliveinastablefamily.Humantraffickingisknownasmodernday
slavery.Peopleareforcetoprovideservicethroughforeandfraud.Everyminuteawomenor
childisforcedintosexslavery.Knowingtheaudiencewenowthathumantraffickingisvery
commoninhighschool,middleschool,formaleandfemale.ThesecondgenrestatsTheydo
notknowiftheycouldgetrapedormurder.(Channel,2015)Onceyouareinthissituationitis
hardtogetoutof.Youloseyourhumanrightsandyoudignityasawoman.
Bothgenresaredifferencebuttheyhavethesameaudience.Thefirstsegmentis
presentedbyaCNNnewsreportandthesecondsegmentisavideopresentbyDiscover
Channel.Duetotheamountoftimetheaudienceisnotgoingtospendmuchtimeoneach
genre.Firstgenretheaudiencewillspendaboutthreetofiveminuteslongandthesecondgenre
isavideotheaudiencewillspendtentofifteenminutes.Thesecondgenrehasmoreof
informationbecauseitisadocumentaryvideothatisbeingrecorded.

Eachgenrehasapurposetoinformtheaudienceonhowhumantraffickingisbeingused
andhowtostophumantracking.Inthefirstgenrethepurposeittoinformtheaudienceonhow
youth,forgingmigrants,andwomenarebeingusedashumantraffickingandhowtheyarebeing
soldoverseas.Afterbeingusedassexslavesforeignmigrantswhoreportbeingforcedinto
labororprostitution;somefacephysicalabuseorevendeath.Theluckyonesescapeorknow
someonewhocanpaytheexorbitantpricefortheirrelease.(Brown,2014)Thesecondgenreis
providedthruavideoonhowtostophumantrackingorsexslaves.Womenjustdonotknowin
thedangertheyarerisking.Theyarenotawareofmanyconsequencestheycouldface.The
videowantstoinformtheaudiencetostophumantracking.TheFreedomFoundationwantto
helpoutpeoplewhoareinvolvedinhumantraffickingandareunabletogetoutofthishorrible
situation.Womenarebeingexposetodrugs,sexualtrade,addictionandmuchmore.Under
coverinvestigatorsaregettingintothewebpagewherethewomenarepostingthedailyjobknow
ashumantracking.Investigatorsandgettingallthereinformationmeetingthematthelocation
theysayandthenarrestthem.StevenGalstontheleaderoftheFreedomFoundationdoesthe
sameactionasinvestigatorsdo.InThailandpeoplearetraffickedinboatsandsentoverseas.It
statsthatTheBurmeseman,whosenamehasbeenchangedforhissafety,wasonafishingboat
inThailandlastyearwhenithappened.ButwhenhearrivedinThailand,hesays,hisrecruiters
soldhimtoaboatcaptainfortheequivalentofaround$430.Afterbeingheldonthevesselfor
10months,workingagainsthiswillandsufferingregularbeatings,hefinallymanagedto
escape.(Brown,2014)
Theaudiencemightnotknowhowlargehumantraffickingisexpandeverday.The
audienceshouldalsobeawareofconditionswomenhavetogothru,andtheconditionstheyare

RhetoricalIssue
Bothgenreexhibitrhetoricalissues,thematterinwhichtheCNNarticleandthe
DiscoveryChannelvideoarebeingenforcedindifferentgenre.
Ethos
Inthefirstgenre,itpresentsonhowafishermenwasbeingsoldashumantraffickingfor
$430asasextrade.Forgingmigrantsarebeingvictimsofacrimeknowashumantrafficking.
AccordingtotheCNNarticleitstatsthatIntheStateDepartment's2012and2013Trafficking
inPersons(TIP)report,Thailandfacedrelegationtotheworstcategory,butreceivedwaivers
basedonaplantobringitselfintocompliancewithminimumstandardsforeliminating
trafficking.(Brown,2014)Inthesecondgenre,investigatorsmadeaninvestigationonage
rangeofhumantraffickingmostlywomen.Agerangeisfrom18to30yearsold.Theymainly
arrestyoungwomenwithages18to25.Mostlyyoungwomenwhohavenostablefamilyand
useprostitutionastheirdailyjob.Thisiswhattheyliveoffof.Womenusuallyhavelarge
amountofmoneyintherebagsandalsoconsumedrugs.
PathosandLogos
Inthereportitprovidesexamplesonhowthestateistryingtogetinactionandstop
humantracking.ItstatsthatAccordingtotheStateDepartment,Thailand'seffortstoaddress
traffickingarebeinghamperedby"corruptionatalllevels."Somecorruptofficialshaveeven
protectedbrothelsandfoodprocessingfacilitiesfromraidsandinspections,theTIPreportsaid.
Policeofficersatthelocalandnationallevel,whohadbeenassignedtoregionsnotoriousfor
trafficking,formedprotectiverelationshipswithtraffickers.Immigrationofficialsandpolice

haveallegedlysoldmigrantswhowereunabletopaylaborbrokersandsextraffickers,according
tothereport.(Brown,2014)Itcreatesanemotionalreportduetothefactthatknowingyoung
girlsarerunningtherelivingbyusinghumantraffickingasadailyjobandviolationhuman
rights.
StructureandDelivery
Giventhemaintopicofbothgenreandwhattheyaretryingtostate.Theinformation
providedbybothgenresisthefirstgenreistryingtoinformtheaudienceonhumantrafficking
andhowitisbeingused.Thesecondgenreistryingtostophumantraffickinghelpthesewomen
whoarelostissociety.

Conclusion
Insummation,bothgenresgiveanunderstandingofhumantraffickinginThailand.Both
ofthegenresareinformative.Bothgenresaretryingtoinformtheaudienceofhuman
traffickingandhowshouldhumantraffickingcometoanend.Weshouldbeawareofwhatis
goingaroundoursocietyandwhatcouldwedotosavewomenwhoareinhorriblesituations
suchashumantraffickingorprostitution.Humantraffickersshouldnotbesellingyoursoulor
yourbodywomenshouldnothavetheirhumanrightsviolated.Humantraffickingshouldcome
toaend.
