Foundation

Foundation
Foundation is the element that gives your skin that dewy fresh looking glow. Foundation can
also be used to even out the tone of the skin and hide unwanted blemishes. Picking the right
tone can complement the skin; however, picking the wrong tone can cause the skin to appear
dry and even dull. Begin by identifying your undertone; look at your wrist if the veins in
that region appear blue you have a cool undertone, if they appear green then your undertone
is more of a warm color, both blue and green veins indicates that your undertone is neutral.
After you have identified your undertone, you should begin to pick the base that matches
5

your skin the best. If you have a warm undertone you should go for more of a yellow base;
cool undertones should stick to bases that are in the red region. Keep in mind that your skin
tone can vary depending on the season, so it would be wise to keep at least two shades of
foundation available. The type of skin is also a factor to take into consideration. The types of
skin include oily, combination, and dry. Individuals with oily skin should stick to foundation
that has a matte finish to avoid adding unnecessary shine to the face. On the other end of the
spectrum, individuals with dry skin should use foundation that has a dewy finish to add
moisture that lasts throughout the day, and avoid caked lines that have the appearance of
cracking in the foundation.

Types of foundation and application

There are many different types of foundation including:

Liquid
Powder
Cream

The type of foundation used also depends on the skin type of the individual. If you have
oily skin you should use a powder; powders usually have a matte finish and this reduces the
oily appearance of the skin. If you have dry skin you should use liquid foundation this adds
6

moisture and allows the foundation to sit on top of the skin rather than sinking in; using
powder on dry skin can cause the powder to cake and cause wrinkle like formations along
the skin. Combination skin individuals should use a cream; the cream is light but still has a
moisturizing agent for the dry areas of the skin. Specific types of creams include BB
creams, which has a serum that includes SPF, hydration, and other skin protectors from the
outdoor elements. BB creams come in various concentrations and can be used on every skin
type.

Concealing blemishes
Unwanted blemishes can often prove to be problematic and are usually disguised with
concealer. Concealer can cover a wide range of blemishes including dark circles, pimples,
dark spots and many other imperfections. Concealer is also used to add depth and dimension
to the face in techniques such as contouring. There are different types of concealers and each
perform a specific task.
Types of concealer:

Green toned
Peach toned
Yellow toned

The green concealer should be used if you are attempting

to conceal blemishes or red marks on the face that can be
seen through foundation. The pink toned concealer is used
for dark circles or discoloration around the eyes. The
yellow toned concealer is for special events and is usually
used for highlighting and contouring techniques.

Concealer application
To conceal under the eye blemishes apply an inverted triangle of concealer underneath the
eye and blend. Applying a block of concealer can cause the concealer to become
concentrated in that one spot and not cover the entire problem area.

Contour and
Highlight

Highlighting and Contouring

Now that you have mastered the art of concealing it is time to move on to highlighting and
concealing. Highlighting is applying concealer, or foundation 1-2 shades lighter than your
natural foundation, to key points on your face to give off the appearance of a natural glow.
Contouring, similar to shading, is the exact opposite; contouring is the application of
foundation 1-2 shades darker than your natural foundation to certain spots on your face to
add depth to your face. Following this technique can cause your face to look thinner and can
create a more defined bone structure. Where you apply concealer and foundation depends on
the shape of your face; the majority of face shapes fall under the categories of oval, heart,
round, rectangle, and square. Identify which face shape is most similar to yours and follow
that pattern. For this example we will follow the oval pattern.

Steps to highlighting and contouring an oval face:

11

Step 1:
Begin by priming the face with a priming solution (this is to even skin tone)

Step 2:
Follow by applying natural foundation with stippling brush

Step 3:
Next take a concealer or foundation 1-2 shades lighter than your skin
tone and apply an inverted triangle in the middle lower region of your
forehead with the highlighting brush. Follow by applying this same
concealer or foundation underneath your eyes in a wing like manor
with the highlighting brush. Continue by applying a nickel sized circle
of the same concealer or foundation at the lower center region of your
chin with the highlighting brush. Follow by applying a thin strip of
concealer or foundation 1-2 shades lighter than your natural foundation down the center of
your nose with the highlighting brush

Step 4:
Next apply acute right triangles of foundation 1-2 shades darker than your
regular foundation just below your cheekbone reaching towards the outer
region of your face with the contouring brush

Step 5:

12

Continue by outlining your nose with foundation 1-2 shades darker than
your natural foundation; place foundation on the alongside the strip of
foundation 1-2 shades lighter than your natural foundation with the
contouring brushFollow by blending each product with the blending
brush; do not blend to the point where the difference in shades is not
visible

Step 6:

Finish by applying bronzer with the bronzer brush in a downward motion

along your cheekbone just above the foundation that is 1-2 shades darker than your natural
foundation

13

Blush

14

Blush
When applied correctly, blush can add warmth and freshness to the face. Blush comes in
many mediums, powders, creams, and stains, each one serving a different purpose. Powder
blush is one of the easiest to apply and only requires a blush brush. Creams can be a little
difficult; rigorous blending is required and damage to the skin can occur if one is not
cautious. Stains are more of an expert medium, they require careful placement; once the
blush is placed on the cheek it sets quickly, little blending will be possible. Where you apply
blush depends on the shape of your face; refer to the chart for specific application based
upon your face shape. For this example we will be using powder as the blush medium and
applying it to an oval face.

15

Tools needed:

Blush
Blush brush

Application of blush:

Step 1:
Begin by lightly placing blush brush in blush

Step 2:
Follow by lightly taping the blush brush against the rim of the blush container to rid of any
excess blush

Step 3:
Continue by placing the brush below the apples of your cheeks and moving
upward in a diagonal motion

16

Step 4:

Next blend the blush slightly to avoid too bright of an appearance of the blush

Step 5:

Finish by making sure the blush has a natural appearance

17

Lips

18

Lips
Finding the right foundation is important, establishing which lip colors are complementing
to your skin tone can add to your overall appearance. When picking colors that are flattering
you must take into consideration your skin tone; the darker your skin tone the warmer the
color should be and for lighter skin tones vice versa. The medium of your lip makeup can
also change the overall appearance of your face. A more matte approach can dress up an
outfit especially when paired with evening attire. For this informational guide we are going
for a natural look; we will focus more on the nude lip and determining the perfect shade for
your skin tone.

Types of lip products

There is a wide range of products that can be used to receive your desired look; examples of
these products are lip liners, lip glosses, lip sticks, and lip stains. The type of product
selected depends on personal preference. Lip liners are usually used as an outline to make
the lips appear larger or even add a gradient effect to the lip stick or lip gloss applied. Lip
gloss is seen as more of a youthful product but can still be used universally, although, some
people refrain from using lip gloss due to the sticky nature of the gloss. Lipstick is the most
popular; it is used regardless of age, and has the simplest application process. An alternative
to a lipstick is a lip stain, this product is long lasting and has a matte effect, however, this
product can dry the lips so applying balm before is recommended.

19

Application of Lip Liner

Lip liner serves as a border to the lipstick or lip gloss applied, however, it is often used by
itself as well. Lip liners are smooth and long lasting, this being said, they have recently
become a popular alternative to lip stick and lip gloss. When applying lip liner as a border to
lip stick it is imperative to pick a shade or two darker than the lipstick being applied. For
this example we will be applying an apple red lip liner as a standalone.

Step 1:

Begin my applying a light balm to the lips

Step 2:

Follow by priming the lips with a concealor to mask any lip color

Step 3:

Next carefully outline the cupids bow and outer curve of the bottom lip

Step 4:

20

Follow by filling in the bottom and upper lip

Step 5:

Proceed by rubbing lips together to even out the color

Step 6:

Continue to fill and rub lips together until desired consistency is reached

Step 7:

Finish by cleaning stray lines off with a cotton swab and make up
remover

21

Application of Lip Gloss

Lip gloss is infamous for being the starter medium for preteens and young adults. Although
lip gloss is wildly popular with the younger generation, simply selecting a darker color
scheme can mature the glossy look. Lip gloss is among one of the easiest mediums to apply
and looks great with almost every look. The key to applying lip gloss is making sure that the
correct amount is administered; too much lip gloss can cause the gloss to become messy and
stick to your hair, too little will wear off within an hour or two. There are many different
types of lip gloss; liquid lip gloss, roll on lip gloss, and tube lip gloss. For this example we
will use a wine colored liquid lip gloss.

22

Step 1:

Begin by applying lip balm to the lips

Step 2:

Follow by applying concealor to block out any color (optional)

Step 3:

Next smoothly brush on the gloss in a gliding motion on both lips

Step 4:

Proceed by rubbing lips together until gloss is spread evenly

23

Step 5:

Finish by removing any gloss outside of lips

Application of Lip Stick

Lip stick is the most commonly used medium among adults and mature women. Like the
other mediums lip stick comes in a wide array of colors and can be used to dress up or down
a look. Lip stick is wildly popular due to its long lasting nature and lack of residue on lips.
There are two major classes of Lip stick; matte and glossy. Matte lip stick is solid in color
and has no shine. Glossy lip stick, similar to lip gloss, is glossy but does not have the sticky
nature of lip gloss. The shade of lip stick you wear should vary with the season; brighter
colors are usually associated with spring and summer, darker colors with winter. For this
example we will be using mauve lipstick, this color works for spring and is a great
transitional piece from spring to summer.

24

Step 1:

Begin by applying a clear chapstick

Step 2:

Follow by applying concealor to the lips

Step 3:

Next carefully trace your cupids bow with the tip of the lip stick

Step 4:

Follow by filling in the rest of your lips

25

Application of lip stain

Lip stains are known for lasting a long period of time. They also have a more natural effect
when compared to the other products. One of the most popular uses for lip stains is the
gradient effect that is created when a pencil or gloss is placed on the inside of the lip stain.
One of the negative side effects of lip stains is that they can be very drying and cause
pealing on the lips if not applied correctly.

Step 1:
Begin by applying a thin layer of balm

Step 2:
Follow by lining your lips with a lip pencil (optional)

26

Step 3:

Next apply an even layer of lip stain in a gliding motion

Step 4:

Finish by apply another layer of balm (2 layers can be added if desired)

27

Lip Care
Using multiple products, such as the ones listed above, can cause a buildup of residue and
dead skin cells. It is important to maintain your lip area to prevent dryness, cracking, and
pealing; a few ways to prevent those include exfoliation, moisturizing, and essential oils that
can be placed on the lips for enhanced moisture. Moisturizing daily will allow lip products
to glide on smoothly rather require large amounts of lip balm. Below are a few methods you
can use to ensure that your lips are properly maintained.

Exfoliation
Exfoliation is achieved by taking a rough medium such as sugar and combining it with a
semi-fluid medium, or essential oil, to create what is known as a scrub. Scrubs can take off
unwanted dead skin, by doing this you are allowing the cells to regenerate and create a new
layer of skin; this can also lighten the appearance of lips. The honey sugar scrub is one of
the best scrubs for riding of cells; the recipe is simple and just requires the mixing of a
teaspoon of brown sugar, honey, and olive oil. Another technique includes mixing a
teaspoon of sugar, coconut oil, and a touch of honey; any of these exfoliation techniques
will help you reach your desired effect.

Moisture
28

Moisturizing your lips is important to keep them healthy and full. Failure to do so may
result in dead skin accumulation and gives the appearance of cracking when product is
applied. Popular products used to moisturize the lips include cocoa butter, healing balm, and
essential oils. Selecting any of these products can put a protective layer over your lips and
prevent damage from occurring.

Eye Shadow and Shapes

29

30

Eye Brushes
Brushes come in several shapes, sizes and names, and are used for several purposes. You do
not have to have all of these brushes to apply makeup well. Although each brush is designed
for a specific purpose, many of them can be used in different ways to achieve the look you
want. If you are currently without brushes, the easiest way to start is to get a basic brush kit
that comes with the essential brushes for your needs, and then add to your brush collection
as needed. This list is to illuminate the various options available to create your eye-works of
art!

Sponge Brush
Found in several eyeshadow compacts, the sponge brush is cheap and easily available, but
comes with many limitations. The tiny sponge cannot pick up enough product to cover the
whole eye, and can be difficult to spread eyeshadow evenly, nor can it blend very well.
Eye Shadow Brush
The most versatile of brushes, the eye shadow brush is mainly used to apply base coats of
powder. It can come in a few sizes, but if a smaller one is handled carefully it can also be
used to highlight and lightly contour the eyes, however, this brush will not blend well.
Cream Shadow Brush
Specifically designed for cream eye shadows, the cream shadow brushs bristles are better
suited for creamy eye shadow formulas. It is also used for base coat and is not meant for
blending.

31

Eye Contour Brush

A contour brush may come in many shapes and even a few sizes, but each shape is
specifically designed to shadow the eyes creases for a deeper, shaded look. It takes some
trial and error to find out which brush shape works best for your eyes.
Angle Eye Shadow Brush
This brush can shape your eye color, contour, and define your eyes. The angle eases
applying eyeshadow in the creases of your eyelids.
Angle Eye Liner Brush
The angle and straight edge of this brush can cleanly apply eye liner across the lid. It is also
very useful to make winged eye liner.
Flat Eye Liner Brush
Very similar to the angled eyeliner brush, but has a flat head instead of the angle.
Blending Eye Shadow Brush
This brush helps blend multiple colors together to create a more natural shaded look. Its
size and shape are varied.
Fine Point Eyeliner Brush
This delicate brush is solely used to apply eye liner, usually in gel or liquid form. If handled
correctly, this brush can help you create wonderfully clean lines.
Smudge Brush
Mostly used for smudging eyeliner, the short and stubby smudge brush helps blend out
harsh eye liner lines for a tousled look.
Eye Fan Brush
When lightly used, the effectively sweep off excess powder or product after makeup
application.
Eyebrow comb and Brush
The double sided brush can be used to both comb
eyebrows, and to separate clumpy mascara for your
eyelashes.

32

Brow Filler Brush

Used to draw in eyebrows from a powder eyebrow kit.

Brush Care:
It is very important to clean out your brushes after heavy use! Excess product will build up
on your brushes bristles, and it will show if you try to use that dirty brush again. Brushes
should be spot cleaned after every use (just wipe off all excess makeup with a paper towel),
and thoroughly cleaned with a brush-cleaning solution every 10 uses or so.

33

Eye Shadow
The world of eyeshadow is vast and expansive, with an endless amount of colors and shades
for you to choose from. Along with the choice of any color, comes the amount of shine you
want with it, and in what consistency you want your product to be in. Eye shadow is the
most versatile form of makeup, and can be used for almost any other pigment-related
makeup need. When lightly wetted you can use it as eyeliner or lip liner, nude shades can be
used powder concealer, darker browns can contour while lighter colors can highlight, and
you can even use your red or pink hues for blush! For the purposes of these tutorials, we
will discuss their intended uses for eyes.

34

Eye Shapes
Like everything else in life, eyes come in many shapes and sizes, and one makeup look does
not fit all! Luckily makeup is a flexible art, and you can manipulate shadows and highlights
to best show off your beautiful and unique features. To understand how contouring works
for different eye shapes, we have provided a diagram to help you best define your beauties.

This is a common shape and is best shaded at the outer

corners in a V shape and at the crease of the eye with an
added highlight on the brow bone.

Almond

Widely set eyes are best shaded on the outer and inner corners
of each eye, to draw the eyes more inward. Lightly contour
the inner corners to up to the brow to draw the eyes inward.

Wide Set

For close set eyes apply more shading on the outer corners,
contouring the shape outward and up, while highlighting the
inner corners to pull the emphasis outward.

Close set

Apply highlight to the inner corners to offset any natural

shadows as well as the brow bone, and apply a darker shadow
along the lashline and creaseline.

More shadows are applied for prominent lids to balance out

the eye, apply contour shade across the lid and blend, line
both lashlines with a darker shade and highlight the
browbone.

To emphasize the shadows of the crease apply contour to

slightly above the crease, and draw it out to the outer corners
of the eyes. Highlight the lids and inner corners.

Deep set

Prominent Lids

Hooded Lids

Asian

35

Most of the contouring will take place above the crease, focusing on the inner and outer
corners of the eye. Apply highlighter to the browbone and lid, and lightly line the lashline.

Eyeliner and Mascara

36

Eyeliner
You can use eyeliner to define your
eyes, shift the focus to your eyes,
and even change the appearance of
your eye shape. The world of
eyeliner is vast and glorious. There
are several types of eyeliner, in an
innumerable amount of colors, with
several methods of application.
Practice is key for good eyeliner
technique.

Types

Liquid

Liquid

Gel Eyeliner

Eyeshadow
(as
lines,
however, it is the
most difficult to apply cleanly. Using liquid eyeliner is
eyeliner)
very similar to painting, except instead of painting on a
still canvas, you are painting on a moving, blinking eyelid with only one eye open. It takes
practice and patience to master. There are many types of products within liquid eyeliner, but
the part of the product that matters most is the applicator. Generally, you want a very thin,
and flexible applicator, for easier use.
Pencil
While easier to control and apply, pencil eyeliner creates a more smudgy appearance. Its
very simple to use, and is more similar to drawing with pencil (shockingly) than painting. It
comes in a variety of colors, and is a wonderful eyeliner starter for makeup beginners.

Gel (or cream)

37

Gel has a thicker consistency than liquid, and must be painted on with a brush. Like liquid,
it can create a clean line, but can also smear or create feathered edges. Depending on the
brand of product you use, gel typically lasts longer than any other eye liner.

Eyeshadow as eyeliner
Eyeshadow, usually when mixed with a little water, can be used to create a versatile
eyeliner. You can create it out of any color of eyeshadow, and it can be blended easily. This
medium, however, can easily be wiped off, and will likely be gone or severely smudged by
the end of the day.

38

Mascara

There are several types of mascara formulas that advertise different effects, usually adding
length, strength, or volume, but the formula normally goes unchanged. The real difference
lies within the variation of the wands, with each one boasting the same result: longer, thicker
eyelashes. With all of the options, the task for finding the perfect mascara for you is a bit
daunting, but the best method is to try several different mascaras, preferably from different
brands. In this section we will provide many
techniques and tricks to using mascara to
create beautiful, clump-free, long eyelashes
with the mascara of your choice.

Volumizing
Mascaras that advertise secret formulas or
special additions for volumizing arent
really that special. The result of great volume
lies within the brushs bristles. A brush that
really adds volume will have a wand with
bristles that are farther apart, allowing more
formula to collect within the wand and adhere
to the eyelashes.
Lengthening
Formulas labeled as lengthening typically do have an added ingredient to the waxy
formula: short synthetic fibers, usually made of nylon or rayon. These fibers add extra
length to your lashes, while looking (relatively) natural.

Strengthening

39

Dont trust a mascara label that says strengthening. Usually, this just means theyve put in
extra oils or some ingredient, but it doesnt matter how many oils or chemicals theyve
added, mascara will naturally weaken the strength of your eyelashes.
Waterproof
If you want mascara that will survive through a nuclear bomb, go waterproof. Some
waterproof formulas are better than others, but they will last longer than their watersmudging counterparts. The H2O resistant formulas do have some flaws, such as their lower
shelf-life, clumpier application, they are more prone to flaking, and you will need good oilbased makeup remover to clean them off.

Mascara Wands

Fiber

The effectiveness of a tube of mascara heavily relies upon the type of wand used.
Typically, there are two different types of wands: Fiber bristled and rubber bristled. Each
has their advantages and disadvantages, and the method of application is the same, but
there isnt a clear winner, so try for yourself and see what you prefer!

Rubber

How To
Step one
Swipe the wand upwards toward your upper lashes,
while being careful not to hit your eye!

Step Two
Repeat with different sections of your eye lashes
(inner and outer corners) until youve reached your
desired effect

For added length, apply mascara to more to the tips of your

lashes, for volume, apply more to the base of your lashes and
add a slight zig-zag motion while brushing outward.

40

False Eyelashes
Or falsies are a tricky, sticky beautiful pain in the eye. The application process takes a lot
of practice to perfect, but with the help of patience and tweezers, applying falsies will be a
breeze.

Types of False Eyelashes

Full-length Lashes
Full-length lashes come in many shapes and forms. They are the most standard form of false
eyelashes, and are applied to each eye in one go. They have a fairly simple application, and
can give a makeup look

Half-length Lashes
Half-length lashes are just applied to
the outer edges of your upper lash
line, and are easier to apply than fulllength lashes, because of their shorter length.

Individual Lashes
These are the trickiest ones! You apply them to individual spots across your upper or lower
eye line, and while they provide the most natural look of each type, they take the longest
time to apply, because you have to glue each one individually.

Lower Lashes
Lower lashes are often not necessary to complete a look, but they do add some extra
definition to your eyelashes. If you are used to applying
upper lashes, then applying the lower lashes may take some
getting used to.

41

How to Apply
Items Needed:
Lashes
Lash glue
Tweezers (optional, but recommended)
Black eyeliner (liquid or gel is easiest)
Lashes are best applied at the end of your makeup look, so these steps are followed after
everything else (especially eyeliner) is already applied.

Step 1
Spread a light line of eyelash glue onto the lash line of the false eyelashes.

Step 2
Blow on the fresh glue, until it slightly solidifies into a tacky substance, but dont let it dry
completely! This step will help the eyelash adhere to the eye faster.

Step 3
Using either tweezers or your hand, place the false eyelash as close to your natural lash line
as possible.

Step 4
Gently press the glue close your lashes, starting with the middle, working your way to the
inner and outer corners of your eye.

Step 5
Let your lashes sit for a bit, until they dry completely

Step 6
Apply mascara to both your lashes and the fake lashes for a more blended
effect. Use lash curler as desired

Step 7
Apply liquid liner on top for the completed look!

42

Eyebrows

43

Step Two
Hold the thread open with both hands by your forefingers and thumbs and twist the thread 46 times with one hand by rotating your wrist.

Eyebrow Shapes
Eyebrows can be a hassle. Shaping them may not turn out the way you want it to be, and
filling them can lead to bad results. Hopefully this guide will help you through maintaining
your brows and guide you along any brow transformations you may have in the future.
When choosing the right brow shape for you, its important to keep in mind how your eye
brows naturally grow. You cant fight what youre given, and the best method to finding a
natural shape is to go off the shape you have.

44

45

Hair Removal Methods

If youre a beginner to shaping your eyebrows, it can be beneficial to visit a professional
and have them wax, pluck or thread. They can help you determine a good eyebrow shape for
your face and give many professional tips. However, you can also easily do it yourself for
much less money. Here are some tutorials for shaping, tweezing, waxing and plucking.
A general rule of thumb for shaping: place an eyeliner pencil along the line of your nose,
and dont remove more than
After you have determined what shape you want, it is always helpful to draw a guideline
with white eyeliner, so you dont get carried away!

Before any hair removal: Be sure to wash your face. Stripping your face of its natural oils
makes pulling the little hairs out much easier.

Tweezing
Plucking your eyelashes with a tweezer is probably the simplest method, and easiest to
control. Some dont like it because of the pain that comes with plucking individual hairs, but
over time the pain is much less noticeable. Pro tip: While it is easier to pluck up close with a
small mirror, make sure to periodically look at your work from farther away, and give
yourself some facial perspective. It is easy to get carried away when youre not looking at
the big picture.

Waxing
Waxing is by far the fastest and most painless (to a degree) method, but it can easily go
wrong. Place your wax strips carefully, and be sure to pull off the right amount of hair.

Step One
Cut out a single wax strip in the size and shape of the section you want removed.

Step Two
Separate the wax strip into two pieces, and carefully place it that section.

Step Three
Rub in the wax strip, against the grain.
46

Step Four
Quickly and confidently rip it off in the opposite direction that your hair grows. Repeat as
needed.

Step Five
When finished, apply some soothing oils (usually provided in the wax strip packet) to the
freshly waxed areas.

Threading
Threading may take a little while to learn. It has a tricky learning curve, but it is quick and
easy once learned. Like tweezing and waxing, the pain will lesson over continuous use.

Step One
Cut piece of thread approximately 15 inches
and tie the ends together to form a loop. Cut
off any excess string.

Step Two
Hold the sting loop between both thumbs and
forefingers, and twist it 4-6 times by twirling
one of your wrists.

Step Three
Now that there is a twisted section in the middle, the motion to actually thread your brows is
to pinch both sets of fingers together, then firmly open one side, forcing the twisted section
to quickly move to the other side. Practice this movement until it feels natural.

47

Step Four
Left Eyebrow: move the twisted section over to the left, and firmly set the string against
your skin, the lower right string will be the path that the twisted section will run and uproot
the hairs, so guide it to where you want hair to be removed.
Right Eyebrow: (reverse directions) move the twisted section over to the right, and firmly
set the string against your skin, the lower left string will be the path that the twisted section
will run and uproot the hairs, so guide it to where you want hair to be removed

Step Five
Left Eyebrow: Quickly and confidently open your left hand to move the twisted thread
across. Repeat as necessary.
Right Eyebrow: Quickly and confidently open your right hand to move the twisted thread
across. Repeat as necessary.

48

Filling In Eyebrows
Filling in eyebrows is both risky and rewarding. For those with sparser eyebrow hairs, this
may help add a defining characteristic to your face. Just be sure to choose the right color!
Dont go more than a few shades darker than your hair color, or the filling will look
unnatural.

Types of Products
Brow Pencil
Like pencil eyeliner, the brow pencil is simple, and easy to use. Staying within your natural
eyebrows, lightly apply several small brushstrokes in the direction your hair grows.

Brow Powder
To fill in your eyebrows with powder, simply use a thin angled brush to lightly sweep (again
in small sections) within your brows. Be sure to choose the correct shade!

Brow Wax
This is used to keep your eyebrow hairs in place, and the types of applicator vary. It can
come in pencil or pot form. To use the pencil, just draw the wax over your filled eyebrows.
For wax that comes in a pot (like gel eyeliner), brush it on with an applicator.
Protip: To keep eyebrow hairs in place, you can also spray a little bit of hairspray onto the
bristled side of a brush comb, then lightly brush through your eyebrows.
