Subject/Topic: Life Sciences: Structure and Functions of Cells

Date: Tuesday, February 24th, 2015

State/District Standards: Students are able to investigate explanations for
the structure and function of cells as the basic units of life.
Learning Objectives: Students will be able to identify different parts of a
cell, and explain the functions of different parts of a cell.
Materials Needed (Teachers and Students): Teacher will need a Power
Point over the structure and function of cells, and printed out diagrams of a
cell for each student to label. Students will need something to write with, and
a notebook. They will also need a computer.
Pre-Assessment/Anticipatory Set: http://www.wordle.net/delete?

index=8538908&d=GKZR Use the Wordle as an interesting way to draw the

students in and also list the objectives of the day. Then you can use the Wordle to
see what the students prior knowledge of the basic parts of a cell is.

INSTRUCTIONAL PHASE:
Input/Modeling: The teacher will have a power point that includes labeled
diagrams of a cell, pictures, and information about the functions of each part
of the cell. Also the student will have read a chapter out of a text book the
day before, so they had some background about the structure and function of
cells before they came in.
Checking for Understanding/Scaffolding: As the teacher goes through
the power point, he or she will have the students take notes and label the
diagram. The teacher will point out the parts of the cells that need to be
labeled and will pause to make sure the students get that part labeled. Once
they have identified and labeled a part of the cell, then the teacher will talk
about the function of that part of the cell.
Guided Practice: Make sure that the teacher walks around every so often,
to make sure that students are doing their work, and to see if they are having
any problems that you can help them with. Give time for students to ask any
questions that they might have. Also allow them to play the game I have
made on the computer that quizzes them on the function of different parts of
the cell.

Differentiated Instruction: Take the time to see if the students have any
questions, after explaining each function of the different parts of the cell.
When explaining the functions of the different parts of the cells, use
analogies to help explain the functions of these parts of the cells.

Independent Practice/Assignment: Each student will need to review the

diagram of the cell and study for a short quiz the next day. This quiz will
include a diagram of a cell that each student will need to be able to label.
There will also be a short matching quiz over the different parts of a cell and
the function of each part that the students will need to study for the next
class period.
Lesson Closure: At the end of class I will show the class a diagram of the
cell with each part labeled, and I will give a brief description of each parts
function. This is a final review of the important parts, and a time to answer
any questions before the class is over.
Post-Assessment: Give each student a diagram of a cell, and have them
label it on their own. Also, give them a matching quiz with a list of the
different parts of a cell and a list of their functions.
Reflection on Lesson: I believe that I did a very good job at presenting and
teaching this lesson, but I think I could have done a better job at
differentiating the lesson to make sure that every student understood the
lesson better.
