The University of Scranton Lesson Plan
Title: Properties of Geometric Figures Types of Triangles
Subject Area and Grade Level: 7th grade Mathematics
Lesson Summary: This lesson will provide students with the knowledge and skills for
identifying and classifying different types of triangles. In this lesson, students will learn
how to identify and classify triangles based on angle measure and side length. Students
will practice these skills individually (i.e. classify by angle or side) before combining
them into one skill (i.e. classify by both angle and side).
Standards:
CC.2.3.7.A.2:Visualize and represent geometric figures and describe the
relationships between them.

Objectives:
Language Objectives
Students will be able to thoroughly explain the characteristics that they used to
identify and classify different types of triangles.
Content Objectives
The student will classify triangles based on side lengths and angle measures
using the six vocabulary words taught during the lesson
Essential Questions:
How can triangles be classified by their angle measures?
How can triangles be classified by the side lengths?
Vocabulary:
Acute
Obtuse
Right
Scalene
Isosceles
Equilateral
Estimated Time: 30 minutes

Materials Required:
Worksheet packet
White board & markers
SmartBoard
Procedure
Before
1.

Using the beginning of the worksheet, review types of angles. Draw the angles
on the board as they are being explained.
2. Have student focus on the visual representation given on the worksheet and the
board.
3. Students will fill in the name of the corresponding angle on the worksheet.

During
1. Start SmartBoard presentation. Review basic information about triangles.
2. Have students participate in the interactive slide that identifies triangles by
angle measure.
3. Students will fill out the section on the worksheet that identifies triangles by
angle measure.
4. Explain and guide students through identifying triangles by side length on
worksheet.
5. Have students participate in interactive SmartBoard slide that identifies
triangles by side length.
6. Students will participate in completing a worksheet to practice these two skills.
After
1. Have student complete the last two interactive slides on the SmartBoard as
review and assessment of their skills in identifying and classifying triangles.
Formative Assessments:
Class participation and student responses
Teacher observation of student work
Worksheet done in class
Student Resources:
Packet containing notes and worksheets
Accommodations: I have several accommodations for this lesson, including:
Presenting information both orally and visually (in the packet, written on the
SmartBoard slides and spoken aloud)
During the SmartBoard activities and worksheet practice, the teacher will be
directly accessible to answer questions for students who may be confused.

Assessments:
The student will complete the last two interactive slides on the SmartBoard as
both a review and an assessment.
Students will be asked to complete the worksheets for homework if they are not
finished in class.
