Lesson/Activity Title: Comparing and Ordering Fractions

Standards Addressed: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.B.5.A Comparing the size of a product to
the size of one factor on the basis of the size of the other factor, without performing the indicated
multiplication.
_____________________________________________________
Purpose: For the students to better understand what the standard fractions are in an inch, so they
may begin to understand the size of fractions; that they may successfully compare and order
fractions, without falling into the pitfalls.
Learning Objective(s): All students will be able to- compare denominators and numerators in
fractions, determine the size of the fraction and place them in the correct order from least to
greatest, without performing multiplication.
Your Goals for Learners: My goal for learners is to be a risk taker and put ideas on the table.
This will be realized by students presenting their answers for the small group.
Your Learning Principles: My lesson will be in a small group setting which allows for more
hands on learning with the learners.
Setting: The lesson will be taught in room 15 in Mrs. Stevens class. It will be in two groups of 67, at my desk, in the back of the room. Two other groups will be with Mrs. Stevens and those
students not with the small math group will be at their desks working on laptops.
Materials and preparation: Mrs. Stevens provided me with the next lesson we will be covering
in small groups. I will make a large copy of a ruler for each student. The students will bring
workbooks and pencils.
Introduction: This lesson will be during the math portion of the morning between 9-9:45am.
The students will bring workbooks and pencils and head back with their math group to either
Mrs. Stevens or my table. Those not in small groups will be working on MobyMath until they
are called back. I will pass out my copied of the ruler to each student. They will use the copy to
determine work individually to determine where the fractions on page 129 would fit on an inch
Activity Procedure: I will start asking them to remember what we have learned about fractions
so far. We will examine an inch on the copy of the enlarged ruler. I will warn them of the pitfalls
of thinking because the denominator is larger than another denominator that it is larger. The
students will then be asked to complete problems 1-5 on page 129 using the copy of the ruler if
needed. They will have 3 minutes to complete before we discuss as a group. Any questions will
be answered before moving on to problems 6-12, which will be completed on an individual basis
as well. 5 minutes will be given before we review those problems as a group.
Differentiation: Both of the groups coming to my table are rather high level math groups. If
some students are struggling, I will cut up some putty I will bring in, to better illustrate sizes of
fractions. I will then go back and review the ruler again. Lastly I will shoot random to be
answered on the fly to see if they get the idea before going back to complete the worksheet. If

they complete the worksheet quickly I will provide they may solve the word problem on the back
board.
Assessment: Teacher will note the students ability to actively and correctly order fractions by
their size, upon reviewing the answers in their workbook.
Extensions: If any time remains, we will discuss how we use fractions in our everyday life.
The students will be completing the next page 130 on Wednesday the 19th.
