Common Core standards that are being reached in this lesson are reading standards for
kindergarten. The students will be able to accomplish understanding key ideas and details. They will
be able to understand and recognize different characters in the story, along with understanding their
own senses.

The students will connect to their past skills with this lesson by understanding and following the
directions the teacher gave prior to reading the story. The students will use this knowledge in the
future when following other directions.

This lesson will allow for students to recognize and use their own senses. The students will be able to
follow directions, along with using their fine and sensory motor skills.

Procedures:

1. The teacher will call the studets over to circle time and have them sit with their hands in their lap
and to pay close attention, to be able to partcipate in the game.
2. The teacher will show the story "Ugly Pie" to the students and tell the students to first listen
carefully to the story.
3. The teacher will read the story again, but before the teacher gives the students a variety of
directions.
4. The teacher tells the students whenever the Ol' Bear sings in the story, then they can get up and
dance around. But, when Ol' Bear sings "itchin" the students can pretend to dance around and itch
themselves like a monkey (sense: touch). When the Ol' Bear sings "smell or sniff" the students can
pretend to sniff around them (sense: smell).
5. Afer the story the teacher will tell the students to sit at te classroom table (sense: hearing).
6. The teacher then will place raisins, apples and walnuts on the table and asks the students to
describe what each object looks and tastes like (sense: taste and sight).
7. The teacher then has the students go into center play and in their sensory table is wet sand with
pie dishes and fruits to make their own "ugly pie".

Materials needed for this lesson are, "Ugly Pie" book by Lisa Wheeler, apples, walnuts, raisins, wet
sand, sensory table, fruit, and pie dishes.

Assessment
Methods:

The students will then be assessed by the teacher asking if they understand what ingredients are
made for "Ugly Pie", this will show if the students understood the story. Also by asking them the
questions about what they felt or tased and if they followed the directions carefully. The students will
also play the online game "The Five Senses" and will be tested from the questions on that game as
well.
