Science Reflection

After reading the standards I am aware that I should allow my students to conduct
experiments, see models, be able to touch and see science. Hands on activities will spark their
interest and want to learn more. It shouldnt be about memorizing facts, equations, or definitions,
science is a subject to wonder and discover new things. As an elementary school teacher one
should understand that science is a fun subject all need to do is find activities that will help us
teach and students learn.
There are many classes that I have taken that I feel have prepared me to teach Science. In
my biology lab class I learned a lot of things that I didn't know before. For example when we had
to dissect a frog, at first I wasnt too happy about this lab but then I was when we were able to
see and understand the inside of a frog. Doing lab reports made me think deeply in the subject or
on the specific lab. Having to take the lab it allowed me to understand the biology lecture class. I
was able to see with my own eyes what was being explained in the lecture class. I was able to
prove and or question what being was taught was correct. Not only did that class prepare me but
so did my Physics 300 Lab. It was by far my most favorite science course Ive ever taken, the
material was always explained welled that I was able to use that knowledge in my Physics
lecture class. According to J.R. Anderson, Instruction (explanation, demonstration, etc.) must be
sufficiently thorough in order for new content to be learned and feel like thats exactly what my
Physics professor did which made it possible for me to understand the material. Lastly the class I

feel has prepared me to teach elementary school science is SMT 416- Earth Science for Teachers.
I learned about the solar system, our planet earth and different types of minerals.
Knowing that science is my least favorite subject I feel like I'm prepared to teach biology,
and anything else that is related to earth. I enjoy talking about planets because I find it
fascinating to think about life on other planets and how our solar system works. I feel welled
prepared to teach students about our solar system. The labs taught me that its very important to
model to the students what they are learning. If it wasnt for the lab classes I took I would have
probably not understood or found it interesting to learn science.
Ever since I was in high school I knew that science wasn't my thing. It was one of those
subjects that I wanted to avoid but I couldn't. I have begun to appreciate science but I feel like I
feel less prepared with physics. I have taken two physics classes in my life, one I took as a senior
in my high school and the other one I took last semester here at California State University
Dominguez Hills. When I took them I was always confused, I had to ask a lot of questions and
there was moments when the answers still didnt make any sense to me. It was very confusing
for me to memorize and understand all the equations that were given to me in my Physics class.
I feel like I need to take other classes and hope to understand physics but for now I feel like I'm
not prepared to teach physics.
Some of the artifacts that I feel like I could put in my portfolio would be from my biology
lab, my Physics 300 lab class and my SMT 416. I learned so much in these classes. I know that
the work that I did in those classes shows how I learned a lot about science. My Lab reports for
physics shows how I am able to explain what I am being taught and be able to follow direction.
Barak Rosenshine states, Opportunities for practice must follow instruction. I agree with
Rosenshine, when I was allowed to practice what I was being taught I was able to understand the

material a little better. The work that I did in my SMT 416 class shows my understanding of the
material.
I believe that the work samples I have from those classes shows how I learned about
science. Every single work assignment was clear. The lab reports demonstrate how I understood
and followed steps in order to obtain the correct result. I was able to conduct an experiment and
understand why I was doing that and what was occurring in the experiment. After completing all
these assignments I feel like I will be able to understand a little better how I want to teach my
students someday.
