MEMORANDOM

To:

Professor Gomez

From: Raymond Banuelos

Subject: Code of Ethics

The purpose of this memo is to inform you and my audience about my choice term for this
extended definition: Code of Ethics, relating to Social Work and the Health Field.
I chose this term because not only in Social Work will one have Ethic concerns but in all
fields in the work force. This is one that will play a big part in the lives of our students
working for the first time in Health and Sciences careers.
Many employers and businesses have standard training(s) in Ethics year round and I felt
that this would help the students who will be working with patients or clients for the first
time in a more professional and demanding field. It is very easy to fall in to the hands of a
bad person seeking to ruin someones life and career by using sexual tactics. This is an
important asset that every health and science employee should have.
Thank you,
Raymond Banuelos

SOCIAL WORK:
CODE OF ETHICS

The Social Worker when working in this profession must abide by Ethics known as a Code of
Conduct, set by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). According to the National
Association of Social Workers, is intended to serve as a guide to the everyday professional.
(Code of ethics). It provides a guide for dealing with ethical issues or a dilemma encountered in
the social work practice and includes specific ethical standards to guide the social worker. This
mission promotes the quality and effectiveness of social work practice and encompasses high
maintenance to ethical conduct with respect to race, ethnicity, national origin, color, and gender.
The purpose of the NASW Code of Ethics is to articulate basic values, principles and ethical
standards to all social workers and social work students, regardless of their professional
functions and settings in which they work or the population they serve. It has six purposes it
serves to promote this code such as:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Identifies core values based on the social works mission.

It summarizes ethical principles reflecting the core values establishing specific standards.
Helps identify when professional obligations, conflicts or uncertainties arise.
Provides standards to the general public when holding the social work profession
accountable.
5. It socializes new practitioners new to the field of the social works mission, values, ethical
and standard principles.
6. It assess whether social workers have engaged in unethical conduct or behavior and
implements cooperation by the worker(s) in adjudication proceedings, disciplinary
rulings or sanctions.

Some of the ethical standards relevant to activities of all social workers included but not limited
to the client(s) are:
1. Responsibility: the client(s) well-being, interests and legal obligations.
2. Self-Determination: assist clients in their efforts to identify and clarify their goals.
3. Informed-Consent: provide services only in context of a professional relationship, when
the client(s) have difficulty understanding or have illiterate issues, lacks capacity to
provide informed consent and protect the client(s) interests by seeking permission to
obtain or provide personal information from third party entities.
4. Competence: be able to provide services within their boundaries of education, training,
licensure, certification and supervised experience.
5. Sexual Harassment: should not harass clients, make sexual advances, requests sex for
sexual favors, verbally or physical or conduct in any sexual relations.
So key issues on ethics and social responsibility of the social worker are important in
maintaining a standard Code of Ethics and a professional attitude when working or assisting
clients in need of social services provided by social agencies in a most high and ethical way;
obtaining for the client(s) every and all services available to the client(s) need, in providing
assistance, assurance and peace of mind during times of turmoil and mishap.
